Tears And Rage

The post below this one reminds me of one of the very first I wrote for JMG. Originally posted here on June 8th, 2004.

Yesterday I watched Ronald Reagan's body being ceremoniously placed for viewing in the Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. The honor guard, comprised of all military services, moved with stiff dignity while placing Reagan's flag-draped coffin on its pedestal. The Marine Corps band played Hail To The Chief then My Country 'Tis Of Thee.

Tiny Nancy Reagan was lead in, followed by her children. Other military and governmental dignitaries filed in and were seated behind the Reagan family. And as the service began, as the religious figure began his familiar droning, as the mourners held each other and dabbed their eyes...I found myself....weeping. But I wasn't weeping for Ronald Reagan. I wasn't weeping for Nancy or her kids.

I was weeping for my friends. Friends that died of AIDS during Reagan's presidency. Friends that never had the slightest chance of surviving their illness because Reagan refused to even speak the word AIDS until many years into the epidemic.

I wept for Barney. Barney the party-thrower, the generous host, the bon vivant. Barney, who could make a stranger feel comfortable in a room full of a hundred new people. Barney, who actually got me to climb up and dance on a nightclub's speakers with him. I wept for Barney who died choking from pneumocystis, in the middle of the night, alone.

I wept for Peyman. Peyman, the Iranian student left stranded in Florida when the Shah fell from power. Peyman, the fashion plate with his beautiful black hair and flashing brown eyes, who wore Parachute and WilliWear and always looked fabulous. Peyman, who taught me that Iranians were not Arabs and how to curse in Farsi. I wept for Peyman who died blind, paralyzed, shrieking and demented.

I wept for Nathan. Nathan, the shy Southern boy with the Star Trek obsession. Nathan, who finally afforded me an understanding of the infield fly rule. Nathan, who had an adorable habit of taking a short jump in the air when something pleased him. I wept for Nathan, whose family refused receipt of his remains.

I thought about my little black address book with 'D' for 'deceased' next to so many names. I've had friends tell me it's macabre to keep using it. I don't care. This is all so fucking unfair. I should be sending those guys silly birthday cards about being middle-aged instead of wondering who has their ashes.

As Reagan's funeral proceeded, my tears to turned to anger and back to tears. This was so not fucking right! I wanted this man to suffer more! I wanted his mind fully engaged and aware of every diaper change. I wanted him to endure endless indignities and know the same fear and ostracism and neglect that my friends had. Knowing that his mind had escaped its physical prison, I felt cheated. My revenge was incomplete.

And then I felt shame for thinking that, even about Ronald Reagan.

For the first time that I can recall, yesterday I felt my absence of faith. It's hard to invoke the satisfying image of somebody burning in hell for eternity when you don't actually believe that hell exists.

I finally turned off the television. I thought viewing Reagan's funeral would bring to me a sense of finality. Instead, I was surprised to learn that I can still cry. I didn't think I could anymore. Not like that.

The True Legacy Of Ronald Reagan

Today Alex Pareene notes at Salon that Ronald Reagan was far more concerned about the potential of aliens attacking from outer space than he was about the AIDS pandemic, which he completely ignored. Reagan frequently spoke on the threat from little green men, an issue he brought up at the United Nations and one that he even discussed with Russian premier Mikhail Gorbachev.
If Ronald Reagan was a genuine UFO nutter or simply in thrall to a simplistic sci-fi plot makes no difference to me. But the fact remains that he spent a lot of time talking about spacemen. Spacemen killed, according to my estimates, no Americans, at all, during Reagan's presidency. Reagan never mentioned AIDS until he was directly questioned about it in his second term, and he never gave a public statement on the epidemic until 1987, when 20,000-30,000 people had already died from it. When it came up in press briefings, it was, at first, a subject of humorous cajoling. Later, the president was advised not to say that children couldn't catch AIDS from casual contact. Members of the Reagan inner circle attacked Surgeon General C. Everett Koop for encouraging sex education and condom use. The Centers for Disease Control was underfunded and there was never a comprehensive plan for dealing with the epidemic.
How many of the people in the below clip might be alive today, had Ronald Reagan and his administration acted decisively in the early years of AIDS?

FROM NOM: Pastors' Resolution Petition

From NOM's Action Center page, where the "Bible believing pastors of Rhode Island" have posted a resolution petition.

WHEREAS, Under normal circumstances, children are best nurtured in the context of a two-parent family, where appropriate male behavior is modeled by a loving father and appropriate female behavior is modeled by a loving mother; and
WHEREAS, Heterosexual marriage provides the strong moral, social, and economic foundation for both family and community life; and WHEREAS, Rhode Island continues to be one of the few states without a so-called Defense of Marriage Act; and

Rachel Maddow On David Kato's Murder

"Will the donor countries that Uganda relies on so heavily say publicly, 'We are paying attention to this murder. Do not disappear David Kato's murder or we will make you a pariah for it'? Given American citizens' vile involvement in this, maybe the United States can take the lead."

Hawkins Rep: She Wants To Build Bridges

Matthew Rettenmund at Boy Culture is an avid fan of Sophie B. Hawkins so he wrote to her management asking about the singer's coming performance at GOProud's CPAC party. Hawkins' rep responded:
"She is not supporting their beliefs but trying to build a bridge so we can all talk and be humans over party. They invited her to play for free. She said she would, if they recognized she is an artist and is going as an artist not taking sides, but being open for them to enjoy her music as humans. This is very risky for Sophie, she knows it, but she is trying to say lets all reach out our hands and try to find understanding. She is so tired of the hate and I think thought love and music and art could build a bridge. I hope you remain a fan. She is really trying to do something good in the world and I am sure she will address this soon."
Rettenmund: "This is not me saying, 'Ew! Don't play for Republicans!' but me asking why, if she feels the need to build a bridge, she would decide to build the bridge to the furthest point away on the other side, to a group whose leader thinks gay activists are literally worse than terrorists, to a group that pays hate-spewing Ann Coulter (while Sophie plays for free)?"

White House Works With NYC's Ali Forney Center On Homeless LGBT Youth Report

Yesterday the White House Media Office issued a special report on homeless LGBT youth. The report was created by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness and spotlights the work being done by NYC's Ali Forney Center as well as the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit.

The Ali Forney Center comments via press release:
This follows upon recent events over the past eight months which demonstrate unprecedented federal attentiveness and responsiveness to the needs of homeless LGBTQ youth. In June of 2010 the Obama Administration released its Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness, which included homeless LGBTQ youth as a priority population. In October of 2010 the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center was awarded a $13.3 Million five year grant to support foster care programs for LGBTQ youth and the Ali Forney Center was awarded a combined $2.4 Million by three federal agencies over five years to support it's programs for homeless LGBTQ youth.

"I am deeply grateful to have a presidential administration that recognizes the terrible suffering of thousands of LGBTQ youth who have been cast out by their families to the streets of our nation." says Carl Siciliano, Executive Director of the Ali Forney Center. "Prior to this year it was almost impossible for organizations dedicated to homeless LGBT youth to receive federal support, and we are thrilled to see that the Obama Administration is willing to support the work of protecting our most hurt and vulnerable youth".
Read the White House report. An excerpt:
Like many homeless youth, LGBTQ youth either runaway or are forced out of the home due to severe family conflict, abuse, neglect, mental health or physical disabilities. They are more at risk once they are homeless for sexual abuse and exploitation. There is a high incidence of depression, suicide initiations, and other mental health disorders among all youth experiencing homelessness, and chronic physical health conditions are common as are high rates of substance abuse disorders. Yet, in spite of all this, if you’ve ever had the opportunity to hang out with LGBTQ youth in a drop in center or elsewhere, you know they are energetic, funny, thoughtful teenagers who have the same hopes and dreams as their peers.

Lesbian Couple Sues Alleged Arsonist

A lesbian couple in Tennessee has filed a lawsuit against the neighbor they believe burned down their house after repeatedly threatening to kill them.
The Stuttes have been together 16 years, and while they’re not legally married, they did celebrate a civil ceremony at the Unitarian Universalist church in Oklahoma City. The complaint does allege taunts made by Millsaps that specifically targeted the Stuttes’ sexual orientation. For example, a month before the fire, on Aug. 4, they allege, Millsaps, whose double wide mobile home rests about 20 feet from the gate leading to the Stuttes’ property, approached them as they stopped to close their front gate. She poked at the Stuttes, alleges the complaint, and asked them, “Do you know what is better than one dead queer? Two dead queers.” The complaint notes that she then threatened to burn their house down, laughed, and returned to her house.
The FBI has yet to classify the fire as arson and the couple's insurance company has yet to pay their claim for the destroyed house. The suit seeks over $1M for damages and for "intentional infliction of emotional distress and malicious harassment." It also seeks compensation for a $7000 insulin pump they contend the alleged arsonist intercepted from a UPS delivery.

Sarah Palin Files Name Trademark

Sarah Palin has filed applications to trademark her name and the name of the her daughter, Bristol. Maybe they're coming out with their own line of moose shotguns?
It's hard for an individual to trademark their name, but it's not without precedent. Pop singer-songwriter Billy Joel has done it, for example. If Palin's applications are granted, many politicians seeking to keep tighter commercial control of their images may well follow suit. Since President Obama was elected, the White House has openly grumbled about advertisers using Obama's name and likeness to sell products. Last year, Obama aides publicly complained after the Weatherproof Garment Company installed a billboard in Times Square showing Obama wearing one of its jackets on a trip to China. But there was little the administration could legally do, since Obama's image and name aren't legally protected. The billboard was eventually removed—though not because of complaints.
If she gets approval, bloggers should then write Sarah Palin™.

JetBlue Gets Dough For Fast Lane

Yesterday the feds gave over $4M to NYC-based JetBlue so that the airline can transition away from ground radar and towards using GPS for its flights from JFK to Florida and the Caribbean. The new system means JetBlue flights so equipped will be shorter and faster.
Years in the planning, the system known as NextGen is expected to deliver an unprecedented level of precision that the FAA says will relieve air traffic congestion, allow more direct routing on flights, reduce flight delays and promote fuel efficiency. "This is just good business, really, independent of the FAA investment," JetBlue Airways chief executive Dave Barger said Thursday. "I'll be delighted to make the rest of the investment."
All commercial aircraft are required to be on the new system by 2020.

Gays & Atheists Blamed For Cyclone

"It is very sad that this dark chapter in Australia’s history is led by an atheist Prime Minister in Julia Gillard and an openly homosexual Greens leader, both who have no regard for God nor prayer. Now we have a new crisis brewing in the seas of Australia with Cyclone Bianca in WA just passing through, and Cyclone Yasi in QLD. How many more disasters will it take before our nation, starting from the Prime Minister, would fall on our knees and ask for God’s protection and turn back to Him?" - Pastor Daniel Nalliah, who also blames Australia's recent wildfires on abortion and claims to have ended a 2007 drought through the power of his prayers.

Bryan Fischer: Leftist Media Owes An Apology To Christian Hero Scott Lively

"Even while admitting that the murder was 'still being investigated,' the Boston Globe was quick to lay the blame at Lively's doorstep, who, along with other pro-family experts, visited Uganda in the spring of 2009 to raise awareness of the many social and health pathologies associated with homosexual behavior. The New York Times, the BBC and NPR all interviewed Lively in recent weeks, trying to blame him for what they believe is a rising tide of homicidal anti-gay fervor in Uganda.

"Now the Daily Monitor is reporting that Enock has told police that he killed Kato because Kato had "coerced him into sodomy." Kato had promised to give him a car, a house and money in exchange for sexual favors, but when Kato didn't keep his end of the bargain and continued to attempt to force himself on Enock sexually, he bought a hammer and beat him to death with it. So this is just another horrific and tragic example of the violent domestic abuse that is not uncommon in homosexual liaisons. Research consistently indicates that rates of violence in gay relationships are several times the rate in heterosexual relationships.

"Bottom line: the major media outlets owe Scott Lively an apology of gigantic proportions. This is blood libel, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Their accusations are irresponsible, baseless and tawdry, and show nothing but contempt for honesty and the truth. Will Lively get the apology he deserves? You could die holding your breath waiting for that day to come." - American Family Association radio host Bryan Fischer, predictably buying the story of the murderous Ugandan police.

Email Of The Day - Eugene Delguadio

"Dear Joe, Obamacare forces you to subsidize Homosexuality. And sadly, it shouldn't surprise any of us. There was just no way Barack Obama would craft a 2,000 page monstrosity of a Healthcare Law without paying off his homosexual masters. Top legal experts have determined that this healthcare bill will create a tax penalty of up to $10,680 a year per traditional family ...and at the same time homosexuals will be given a $1,069 annual bonus for living together in sin.

"But as if this bonus for homosexual couples wasn't bad enough, the bill also targets children for special pro-homosexual education programs starting in elementary school. Not only will Sodomy Training Seminars invade our schools, but government healthcare would force healthy Americans like you and me to pay for the treatment of infected homosexuals. HIV treatments, AIDS medications, and the whole slew of Sexually Transmitted Infections that plague the homosexual lifestyle. That's why we have to insist John Beohner defund Obamacare." -Eugene Delgaudio, the self-proclaimed Public Advocate of the U.S., who'd like you to send him money to stop the Homosexual Healthcare Payback.

Delgaudio's last email warned about the Mandatory Homosexual Marriage Act.

New Yorkers Turn Out For David Kato Vigil And Protest At Uganda's UN Mission

Despite the bone-chilling temperatures, a large crowd of LGBT activists, allies, and local politicians stood in the slush and snow tonight near the United Nations to memorialize slain Ugandan activist David Kato, who now stands accused being responsible for his own murder by the Ugandan police.

Speakers included the head of the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission, gay Ugandan nationals, gay clergy, and two NYC council members, all of whom vowed to get the truth about Kato's murder from the Ugandan government, which receives $500 million in U.S. aid annually. Money being paid, it was pointed out, to enable the brutalization and murders of LGBT people.

Not forgotten at the event was the murderous complicity of American and Ugandan evangelicals in this brutal crime and speakers repeatedly spat out the names of Scott Lively, Rick Warren, and Martin Ssempa, all of whom were promised that their names and reputations will forever be linked to this outrage.

After the vigil, candles were lit and the crowd proceeded silently two blocks away to the Uganda Mission, where a Ugandan lesbian activist laid a letter of demands and flowers against a placard depicting Kato which had been propped outside the building's entrance. As that occurred, the hundred or so people behind the barricades shouted up at the windows of Uganda House, "Stop the violence, stop the hate! Do your job, investigate!"

Sarah Palin To Snub CPAC

Sarah Palin has declined the invitation to give the keynote address at next week's CPAC 2011. In previous years, Palin has said she'd attend but never showed up.
Last year, the former Alaska governor turned down an opportunity to speak at the event, reportedly over concerns of being affiliated with CPAC organizer David Keene. In 2008 and 2009, Palin pulled out of plans to address the conservative gathering. "We're disappointed that she wasn't able to make it this year," said Keene through a spokesman on Thursday, ABC News reports. He added that Palin had "expressed interest" in attending the event.
In the past week other Tea Party heavyweights like Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Jim DeMint, and NJ Gov. Chris Christie have all announced their non-attendance at CPAC. None of this has to do with GOProud, right?

Today In Frivolous Lawsuits

Some porn outfit sued in California court to stop the distribution of free online porn. The company wasn't alleging that their content was being stolen, they just don't like the idea of free porn, period.
"The ubiquitous distribution of free adult videos through redtube.com has had a massive negative impact on the business model of adult website proprietors," charged the complaint against Redtube owner Bright Imperial Limited of Hong Kong. "Now that consumers have the ability to watch high quality adult videos for free on redtube.com, fewer are making the choice to pay other adult website proprietors for the same content." Thus, Redtube.com has caused "many millions of dollars of damages to proprietors of adult entertainment websites," including those of the plaintiff in this instance, one Kevin Cammarata of Los Angeles, California. This, he charged, was a violation of California's Unfair Practices Act.
An appeals court has dismissed the case as a SLAPP suit, one that is "intended to censor, intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition."

UPDATE: Despite what some think, this was not a clever bit of guerrilla marketing but a complex case with multiple defendants.

WikiLeaks has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for the site's "exposure of corruption, war crimes and torture around the world."
Nobel-watcher and Peace Research Institute Oslo Director Kristian Berg Harpviken says he is not surprised WikiLeaks has been nominated and he expects it will receive more than one vote. "WikiLeaks has been on top of the international news headlines for the last 12 months," he said. "It is also something very new in more ways than just bringing interesting news. A wide range of people are invited to make a peace prize nomination, including politicians, professors, and former laureates.

Ontario Gets Metered Internet Usage

An Ontario internet provider is the first in Canada to impose greatly lowered usage caps on its customers. This move comes in response to the exploding popularity of heavy-bandwidth sites like Netflix. Customers who exceed their contracted usage will page steep fees.
Starting on March 1, Ontario TekSavvy members who subscribed to the 5Mbps plan have a new usage cap of 25GB, "substantially down from the 200GB or unlimited deals TekSavvy was able to offer before the CRTC's decision to impose usage based billing," the message added. By way of comparison, Comcast here in the United States has a 250GB data cap. Looks like lots of Canadians can kiss that kind of high ceiling goodbye. And going over will cost you: according to TekSavvy, the CRTC put data overage rates at CAN $1.90 per gigabyte for most of Canada, and $2.35 for the country's French-speaking region.

Bottom line: no more unlimited buffet. TekSavvy users who bought the "High Speed Internet Premium" plan at $31.95 now get 175GB less per month. "Extensive web surfing, sharing music, video streaming, downloading and playing games, online shopping and email," could put users over the 25GB cap, TekSavvy warns. Also, watch out "power users that use multiple computers, smartphones, and game consoles at the same time."
So not only are some internet providers charging users much more for the same service, they are charging the providers more to deliver that content. What a freekin' racket.

UPDATE: Canadian readers point out that the government is threatening to ban the new billing system.

CALIFORNIA: State Supreme Court May Weigh In On Prop 8 Request Next Week

Today the San Francisco Chronicle reports:
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakayue says the California Supreme Court will decide soon, maybe next week, on whether to enter the Proposition 8 gay marriage fray. The 9th U.S. Court of Appeals said last month that it cannot decide if the gay marriage ban is constitutional until the state high court weighs in on whether proposition sponsors have authority to defend the measure. A three-judge panel asked the California Supreme Court to decide if ballot proposition backers can step in to defend voter-approved initiatives in court when state officials refuse to do so. The panel suggested it would have to dismiss the case if there's no state high court input.
If I'm reading this right, the Court is going to decide if it wants to decide.

Christian Serial Adulterer Defends Marriage

Sophie B. Hawkins To Headline GOProud/Breitbart Party At CPAC

Andrew Breitbart's promised "Super Gay 80s CPAC Party" for GOProud will actually be headlined by openly bisexual 90s two-hit wonder Sophie B. Hawkins. (Depeche Mode and New Order must have been unavailable.) Hawkins is best known for her 1992 hit Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover, an appropriate metaphor for all that begging GOProud makes for Tea Party love. Via press release:
“The Big Party will celebrate GOProud and the growth of a conservative movement that is focused on getting the government out of people’s lives,” said Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director of GOProud. “We are thrilled to have Andrew Breitbart join us in putting together what will be the party of the CPAC weekend.” “This party will highlight the story the main stream media has missed in the weeks leading up to CPAC, namely that the vast majority of the conservative movement is united and welcomes GOProud and any other conservative into the fold,” said Andrew Breitbart, a member of GOProud’s Advisory Council. “The truth is that it is liberals in America who are bent on dividing people, on forcing people into ideological boxes based merely on their race, religion, sex or sexual orientation.”
Adding to the oddity of Hawkins' CPAC selection is that she was an ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton, even to the point of rerecording her above-cited trademark hit in support of Clinton's 2008 presidential bid.

Gay Walk Of Fame Planned For Castro

In a project similar to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, 20 noted LGBT figures have been selected for the Castro's Rainbow Honor Walk. Not all of the honorees were San Francisco residents. Matthew Bajko reports at the Bay Area Reporter:
Fourteen men and six women have been chosen to be the first group of 20 LGBT luminaries to be honored with plaques along the sidewalks of the Castro, San Francisco's gay neighborhood, the Bay Area Reporter has learned. The list includes the famous, such as the poet Allen Ginsberg and pop artist Keith Haring, to unsung heroes few people may know, such as Jane Addams, the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, and Japanese playwright Yukio Mishima. Known as the Rainbow Honor Walk, the project is aimed at showcasing the extraordinary achievements LGBT people have made toward human society despite the hatred and lack of rights they faced due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
All those chosen were open about their sexuality or gender identity when they were living. In addition to the names above, honorees include disco star Sylvester James, civil rights hero Bayard Rustin, computing pioneer Alan Turing, AIDS activist George Choy, playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, Harry Hay, James Baldwin, Frida Kahlo, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Randy Shilts, Tom Waddell, Tennessee Williams, Virginia Wolfe, Del Martin, and Christine Jorgensen. The Bay Area Reporter notes that three of honorees took their own lives and that five died of AIDS. Hit the link for Bajko's complete article and information on how to participate in the project.

UPDATE: Curiously, Harvey Milk doesn't make the list, but that may be because tributes to Milk are already omnipresent in the Castro.

Christian Right Supports Mubarak

A quick glance at today's World Net Daily headlines tells you how the American Christian right feels about the situation in Egypt. Meanwhile wingnut "prophet" Cindy Jacobs has issued a prayer that Hosni Mubarak holds office. According to Jacobs, Mubarak has been done in by President Obama's "treachery and betrayal."
"Pray for wise and educated voices of authority to stand up and speak the truth, about this event and where it is headed. —Pray that the Lord would forgive America for the deceitful undermining of an ally nation, done by Obama. Keep in mind that Egypt currently has a peace treaty in effect with Israel. Pray that the Lord would protect American citizens from the terrible consequences that might come as a result of this treachery and betrayal perpetrated by the US leadership. America had been shown to be profoundly weak, unreliable, and compromised in these last two Obama years, but now more than ever. Pray that the Lord would protect the people of America in this nation’s high state of vulnerability."

Utah GOP Rep Proposes Bills To Exclude Gay Families From All Public Programs

Using language that echoes words found in Mormon documents, Utah state Rep. LaVar Christensen has filed two bills may exclude gay families from all publicly funded programs and laws.
Rep. LaVar Christensen, R-Draper, filed a bill Wednesday, HB270, that would reiterate the state’s policy that marriage is between a man and a woman and require that publicly funded programs, laws and regulations that are designed to support families be “carefully scrutinized to ensure that they promote the family.” Brandie Balken, executive director of Equality Utah, said the group is "deeply concerned" about the proposed law. "It could be used to create a filter for public agencies and a way to target laws, services and funding that currently help single Utahns or Utahns with families that differ from Representative Christensen's," she said.
Christensen's second bill in a one-sentence item that declares, "An arrangement, agreement or transaction that is unlawful or violates public policy is void and unenforceable." LGBT activists say that could be interpreted to make void any wills or medical directives between gay couples. Christensen is a lay bishop with the LDS Church.

Ugandan Police: David Kato Forced The Killer To Commit Sodomy

Aaaand here we have it. As predicted, the Ugandan police, who have a track record of beating and killing gay people, are now claiming that David Kato's killer was forced to murder him. Because Kato was a dirty homosexual who wanted sex. Or so an "anonymous police source" is claiming to the press. From the Uganda Monitor:
A man whom police arrested yesterday on allegations of killing David Kato, a human rights activist, has reportedly told police that the deceased coerced him into sodomy. David Kato, 46, an advocacy officer for the gay rights group, Sexual Minorities Uganda, was found with head wounds at his home in Bukusa, Mukono District but died on his way to hospital last Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said the suspect had been hiding in Nakabago village, Mukono District. “It is true the suspect has been arrested but we need to record his statement first before giving a formal statement,” Ms Nabakooba said yesterday. But a police source, who preferred anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the press, said the suspect confessed to killing Kato because he was reportedly tired of engaging in homosexual practices.

“We have taken him to Mukono Magistrate’s Court to record an extrajudicial statement,” the source said. “He told us that he killed Kato after he failed to give him a car, a house and money he promised as rewards for having sex with him,” the source said.
Surely you can understand the predicament the Ugandan government finds themselves in. They couldn't ignore or even sanction the murder of a gay man, as they normally would, due to the international publicly surrounding the case. But they also couldn't allow the murder to be construed as politically motivated, lest the resultant outrage dry up those annual millions in foreign aid.

And don't overlook that this so-called "motive" precisely fits the long-running Christianist claim that evil local gays are using using Western-supplied money to recruit Uganda's helpless youth into homosexuality, a charge repeated in the very issue of the newspaper that called for Kato's murder.

We will never get the truth, you can bet on that.

Senate Defeats "Obamacare" Repeal

The GOP's "repeal Obamacare" dog-and-pony show hit the wall in the Senate today. The vote was 47-51, right along party lines. Lieberman and Warner were not present.
With a Democratic president and Republicans 13 votes short of the 60 votes they would need to break a filibuster in the Senate, the odds of the law being overturned legislatively in the next two years are essentially zero. It is possible that it will be overturned in the courts, however; two federal judges have deemed the law unconstitutional, while two have found it to be constitutional. The issue will likely end up before the Supreme Court. In classic Senate fashion, the vote on the repeal measure was anything but straightforward. The repeal measure was actually in the form of an amendment to the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill, and the vote was actually on a "budget point of order" and needed 60 votes for passage.

SPLC Alert: Anti-Gay Christian Group Lies In Fund-Raising Letter About Hate Crimes

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center's HateWatch column, the Traditional Values Coalition is raising money by claiming that the 2009 passage of the Matthew Shepard Act outlawed the Bible as "hate literature."
The Christian Seniors Association (CSA), a front group of the TVC, recently sent out a fundraising letter claiming that the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act (HCPA) of 2009, which added sexual orientation to the classes protected by federal hate crime legislation, “makes the Bible illegal ‘Hate Literature.’” The letter further claims that “under this law, criticism of homosexuality is deemed discrimination – just like racism,” and ultimately, the intent of the law is to “outlaw Christianity.” Scary stuff. Except that none of it is true.
The SPLC points out that the good Christians at the TVC have a long track record of shady fundraising, including one mailed campaign that pretended to be from the federal government.
The CSA – which bills itself as “America’s Christian alternative to the far-Left AARP” – has a history of fundraising letters that prey on unfounded fears and, in some cases, even mimic government documents. In 2006, the CSA mailed out bogus “U.S. Taxpayer Census” forms. The packet included a survey about Social Security and dark warnings about politicians raiding the program for personal gain. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the mailing did not explicitly point out that money donated to the CSA would go directly to the TVC.
The head of the CSA is married to Andrea Lafferty, the daughter of Lou Sheldon, who is the founder of the certified hate group, the Traditional Values Coalition. Just keeping that ill-gotten money in the family.

Headline Of The Day

From the Onion, of course. "242 House Republicans voted Wednesday to repeal the Asteroid Destruction and American Preservation Act, which was signed into law last year to destroy the immense asteroid currently hurtling toward Earth." If Obama did propose such a bill, you know the GOP would be against it.

Scott Lively: Gays Are Murdering Uganda

"Uganda is being murdered. The nation once called 'The Pearl of Africa' by Winston Churchill, a lush and beautiful country as fertile as the Nile Delta. The murderers are the lavender Marxists, the now-global network of sexual revolutionaries bent on remaking the entire world in their own perverted image, whose juggernaut has toppled even once mighty Britain, crushing under their lavender boots after eight centuries the symbol of its Christian power: the Magna Charta, whose first principle had proclaimed 'The English church must be free!'

"These revolutionists of Sodom, who march triumphantly through all the major cities of the western world to flaunt their defeat of moral law, and who hold both Hollywood and the heart of America’s president in their iron grip: These very same zealots have fixed their malevolent gaze on Christian Uganda. [snip] There is indeed evil in Uganda today, but it is not the reaction of Christian and Moslem citizens to the rape of their culture. It is the pink-gloved hand of western powers that are cutting the throat of Africa’s most God-fearing country, and one of the world‘s most promising Christian democracies." - Pedophile ally and SPLC-certified hate group head Scott Lively, in a piece posted by anti-gay mental case Ryan Sorba on his Young Conservatives of California site.

SOUTH DAKOTA: Republican Lawmaker Proposes Mandatory Gun Ownership

South Dakota Tea Party-backed GOP state Rep. Hal Wick has proposed a bill that would require every adult in the state to by a gun "sufficient to provide for their personal self-defense."
The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.” The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.”
Wick's bill, of course, is meant to mock "Obamacare" as being as equally unconstitutional as mandating gun ownership. Over at Salon, however, Alex Pareene points out that there's nothing unconstitutional about a state requiring one to purchase a gun.
No one expects the bill to become a law, but these guys are just trying to make a point, and that point is that they don't even understand conservative talking points about the individual mandate. The argument against the individual mandate is that the federal government doesn't have the power to compel people to purchase private insurance. It is not about what states can and can't do. That's kind of the fundamental issue, actually. The role and powers of the federal government.

PhoboQuotable - E.W. Jackson

"This [Chick-Fil-A boycott] is further proof of the insidious and dangerous hatred by homosexual activists of any Christian who dares try to live out their biblical values. The problem in society today is not hatred of homosexuals, but hatred by homosexuals of anyone who refuses to say 'amen' to their sexual behavior.

"Go out of your way to patronize this fine business. They have a right to support whomever they wish without being persecuted for their Christian faith and values. The bigotry is so virulent that it may be time to make Christians a protected class. Right now 'Christo-phobia' and 'Biblo-phobia' are at such a fever pitch among leftists and homosexual activists, and they need to be stopped before they get carried away in their zeal and do bodily harm to someone. Once again we must remind them our Constitution says, 'freedom of religion' and not 'freedom from religion.'" - E.W. Jackson, head of Staying True to America's National Destiny (STAND), which wants to replace our democracy with a Bible-based theocracy.

NOTE: Jackson is apparently unaware that as per the Civil Rights Act Of 1964, Christians are already a "protected class."

UGANDA: Police Make Arrest In Kato Murder, Say Robbery Not A Motive

Last week the disreputable Ugandan police insisted that David Kato's murder was a mere robbery gone lethal and had nothing to do with his status as the nation's most prominent LGBT activist. Now the police have changed their story after arresting a man they say has confessed to the killing. Which now isn't robbery-related.
"The prime suspect, Nsubuga Enock, was arrested today at around 4pm when he went to visit his girlfriend," police spokesman Vincent Ssetake told Reuters. He has confessed to the murder. It wasn't a robbery and it wasn't because Kato was an activist. It was a personal disagreement but I can't say more than that." Ssetake said that Enock would appear in court on Wednesday evening. Police said last week that Enock, whom they described as a "well-known thief," had been staying with Kato after the activist bailed him out of prison on January 24.
Gay activists aren't buying this latest version of the crime either. Kato's murder coming just weeks after his "HANG THEM" outing in a local newspaper is extremely suspiciously timed and some fear that we'll never get the truth from the Ugandan government. Why would we? The Ugandan government has a huge stake in covering up the true motive in Kato's murder, as international human rights groups are now threatening to lobby for an end to aid to Uganda. There are many millions of dollars at stake, some of which, local activists apparently suspect, may make it back to the family of the confessed killer.

The best-case scenario that can probably come out of this now, should the latest police story stick and Kato's killing is ruled a "personal disagreement," is that American anti-gay activists might tread more carefully when inflaming violence against gays in other countries. We can only hope.

Google Busts Microsoft's Bing

Google has busted Microsoft's Bing for stealing search engine results.
Google first suspected foul play in May 2010. By October 2010, with Bing results beginning to look uncannily like Google's, it knew something had to be done about it -- and so, in true, nerdtastic style, Google set up a sting to prove that Microsoft was actually behind the wholesale mimicry of Google's search results. Google injected "synthetic" results into its search engine -- fake queries and results that no real user or engine would ever generate. Then, on D-Day, December 17, about 20 Google engineers were asked to run the test queries with Internet Explorer 8, Bing Bar and Suggested Sites. By December 31, some of these fake results began appearing on Bing.
Bing is lame anyway.

Phyllis Schlafly On "Activist Judges"

"It really is an outrage when the judges are trying to decide important issues like the definition of marriage, like taking private property, like whether we have a cross or whether we're able to say a prayer at a public school event. We can play that game, too. But in particular of the courts, I think that one of the most important elections last November 2 was the bouncing out of three judges of the Iowa State Supreme Court who had voted for same-sex 'marriage,' overriding the will of the legislature and the people of Iowa." - Phyllis Schlafly, whose Eagle Forum advocates for replacing the government with a "Biblical law based" theocracy.

RELATED: When we last heard from Schlafly here, she was demanding that Muslims be banned from the U.S. military, fired from all government jobs, and be ruled ineligible to hold public office.

Quote Of The Day - Michelle Malkin

"Progressive groups are gloating over Chick-Fil-A’s public relations troubles exacerbated by the nation’s politicized paper of record. Not because they care about winning hearts and minds over gay rights or marriage policy, but because their core objective is to marginalize political opponents and chill Christian philanthropy and activism. The fearsome 'muscle-flexing' isn’t being done by innocent job-creators selling chicken sandwiches and waffle fries. It’s being done by the hysterical bullies trying to drive them off college grounds and out of their neighborhoods in the name of 'human rights.'

"Remember: These were the same tactics the left-wing mob used in California to intimidate supporters of the Proposition 8 traditional marriage initiative. Individual donors were put on an 'Anti-Gay Black List.' Businesses who contributed money to the Prop. 8 campaign were besieged by fist-wielding protesters. The artistic director of the California Musical Theatre was forced to resign over his $1,000 donation. Message: Associate with the wrong political cause and you will pay. So much for national 'civility.'" - Wingnut columnist Michelle Malkin, in a typically lie-filled column.

Borders To File For Bankruptcy

Borders Books is expected to close 150 stores and file for bankruptcy in the next week. Analysts blame the Amazon Kindle, sort of.
Analysts have faulted Borders for being ill equipped to adapt to bookbuyers' migration to digital formats and for having too many stores in an age when many shoppers prefer to buy even paper books on line from retailers like Amazon.com. The chain operates 500 namesake superstores in addition to the smaller Waldenbooks chain. About three-quarter of its superstore leases expire in 2017 and beyond, according to a regulatory filing. Borders is late comer to the ebooks market, a rare source of growth in the publishing world, launching its ebook store eight months after its larger rival, Barnes & Noble Inc, and nearly three years after Amazon.com. Sales at stores open at least a year have plunged in recent years, with overall company sales down 37.3 percent in the last three years.

Bishop Eddie Long: You Need To Give Us Back Our Million Dollars

Remember when I told you about the financial scam being run out of Bishop Eddie Long's Atlanta mega-church? Yesterday he posted a video asking the operators of that Long-authorized scam to return one million dollars to his congregants. That way, presumably, they can turn the money over to its rightful owner, Bishop Eddie Long. The first comment on YouTube: "Hey Eddie Schlong, why don't you sell off those Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces, half of that jewelry and one or two of them damn condos and give the money to your parishioners?" The civil lawsuit filed by four young men who accuse Long of coercing them into sex is set to go to court on July 7th.
