Keith Olbermann: Joining Current TV?

Keith Olbermann announced today that he'd be revealing a major career development tomorrow. Word is leaking out tonight that he's joining Al Gore's Current TV.
This was about as unexpected as it gets, and yet it makes a lot of sense for both Olbermann and the network. Olbermann is reportedly set to take a stake in the channel as well, which could make this more than just a typical TV talent deal. It could be more akin to the kind of pact Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications struck for her new cable network, OWN. That said, the extent of Olbermann’s involvement on-air is not yet known; he could simply recreate his own MSNBC show for an hour every weeknight or try something more ambitious like Winfrey did, molding the entire channel’s sensibility in her own image. Being an owner instead of an employee is also best for Olbermann and someone of his, shall we say, temperament, or risk chafing yet again under the reins of another corporate overlord (see MSNBC, Fox Sports, ESPN etc.). That said, we can all look forward to the inevitable headlines of Olbermann and Gore duking it out.

Billie Ray Martin - Sweet Suburban Disco

The fantastic Billie Ray Martin is back with Sweet Suburban Disco, a lovely electro number reminiscent of her stone late 80s club classics with Electribe 101 (Talking With Myself, Tell Me When The Fever Ended) and her 1995 global solo smash, Your Loving Arms. The new track and its remixes drop on iTunes on February 28th. (The remix by Erasure's Vince Clark is especially tasty.) Courtesy of Billie's U.S. promoters, here's a JMG sneak of the radio edit.

RELATED: Back in '95, I somehow saw Billie perform Your Loving Arms three nights in a row at clubs in three different cities: South Beach's Club 1235/Paragon/Level, some forgotten place in West Palm Beach, and at Fort Lauderdale's The Stud, which was the best leather disco that ever used to be a Red Lobster. I wasn't stalking her, I just went out a really, really lot in those days.

UnMarriage Until Gay Marriage

Popular performance artist Rev. Billy and his Church of Life After Shopping will stage a mass un-wedding in Central Park this Sunday.
Straight, married supporters of same sex marriage will un-marry in a mass ritual at New York City's Bethesda Angel this Valentine's Day weekend, sending a strong message to New York State's leadership for the for the second year in a row and holding Gov Cuomo to his recent campaign promise:“I want to be the governor who signs the law that makes equality a reality in the state of New York.” The mass ritual will be administered by Reverend Billy, an officiant of the rites of marriage in the City of New York. The massive "unwedding," in the style of Reverend Moon's mass weddings, will be accompanied by music and love songs and a choral anthem called "I Do, I Do".
Rev. Billy's group marched in front of us in last year's NYC Pride Parade and he was so tickled by the name of this here website thingy that he shouted it repeatedly from his megaphone. I do believe I'll be at the Bethesda Fountain this Sunday.

INDIANA: Marriage Ban Advances

Same-sex marriage is already illegal in Indiana, but the GOP wants to make it super-extra-double illegal.
Republican lawmakers in Indiana have resumed their push for a constitutional amendment that would shore up an existing state law banning gay marriage. A GOP-ruled House committee voted 8-4 along party lines today to advance the proposal, which now moves to the full House for consideration. The amendment states that only marriage between one man and one woman is valid in Indiana, and prohibits civil unions by stating that a legal status "substantially similar" to marriage for unmarried people is not valid.
Attempts to install a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage failed in recent years, but now the GOP controls both chambers of the Indiana legislature. Similar to Iowa, Indiana law stipulates that constitutional amendments must pass in two legislative sessions before being placed on the ballot.

U.S.-Backed Despots Of The 20th Century

Relative to the situation in Egypt, today Canada's National Post recaps some of the world's most notorious despots whose regimes were propped up by the United States.
“Lots of countries have client states. But, American exceptionalism, its adherence and promotion of supposed democratic values, that’s always also been a part of its foreign policy,” says Alexander Cooley, a political scientist at New York’s Barnard College and author of Base Politics: Democratic Change and the U.S. Military Overseas. “So there’s always existed a public tension between the two when you talk about clients and support for clients because American officials have always publicly advocated this kind of transformative values agenda, whereas China and Russia don’t do that.” And yet the reality is every one of these countries, and more, relies on Washington’s willingness to contradict itself. They know only the U.S. can afford to buy stability in the Middle East to keep the canals open, and the oil cheap and ready, by propping up Mr. Mubarak, the Saudis and Pakistan — even if it means enduring accusations of blatant hypocrisy for cozying up to some pretty nasty SOBs.

Pope Can't Donate His Holy Organs

Once upon a time, Joseph Ratzinger had an organ donor card. But now that's he's the pope, his organs are too holy to transplant.
In 1999, six years before he was elected to the papacy, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger disclosed that he always carried an organ donor's card with him and encouraged the practice as "an act of love." Vatican officials say that after a pope dies, his body belongs to the entire Church and must be buried intact. Furthermore, if papal organs were donated, they would become relics in other bodies if he were eventually made a saint.

Quote Of The Day - Bryan Fischer

"If you’re a service member with privacy concerns, forget about it. You will be forced to share open-bay showers with leering homosexuals and living quarters with fellow soldiers who may want to jump your bones. The repeal of the ban on homosexual service was rammed down the throats of the American public in a shameful and undemocratic lame duck session of Congress, by lawmakers who had been voted out of power by the American people.

"The Democrats’ death rattle could be heard from coast to coast, but they reached out from the grave and grabbed the military by the neck in one final frenzied spasm. Well, there is a new posse in town, many of whom campaigned as friends of the family and supporters of sexual decency. As Chris Christie has said, perhaps now is the time for pro-family Republicans in the House to 'put up or shut up.' So who will step forward at this moment and demonstrate the leadership necessary to save America’s national defense from this disastrous exercise in social engineering?" - American Family Association radio host Bryan Fischer, joining the call to defund the repeal of DADT.

Dubya Cancels Visit To Switzerland Over Fears Of Arrest For War Crimes

George W. Bush will not be visiting Switzerland after all.
Former President George W. Bush canceled a February 12 visit to a Jewish charity gala in Switzerland, reportedly out of fears that legal action would be taken against him for his role in authorizing torture. Human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, the International Federation of Human Rights, and Center for Constitutional Rights, said they had intended to submit a 2,500-page case against Bush in Geneva “on behalf of two of men, Majid Khan, who remains at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Sami al-Hajj, a former Al Jazeera cameraman who was released in May 2008.”
Duyba's would-be hosts claim they canceled his invitation because of security concerns.

The Failure To Act

White House Press Conference, 1982

Laughter about dead queers. At the White House. It was five long horrifying and desperate years later before Reagan finally personally addressed the AIDS epidemic, when he came out against a public prevention campaign, saying, "Let's be honest with ourselves, AIDS information can not be what some call 'value neutral.' After all, when it comes to preventing AIDS, don't medicine and morality teach the same lessons?" By then, tens of thousands had died.

HomoQuotable - Larry Kramer

"It is remarkable that two of the so-called 'greatest presidents' have also allowed the greatest perpetrations and perpetuations of mass murder. Franklin D. Roosevelt was shamefully inept in dealing with 'the Jewish question,' (see my play The Normal Heart), most ironically since so many Jews were his most loyal supporters, the Jerry Zipkins of their day. No one really writes about this. Roosevelt is one of history’s great gods. Just as no one really writes about Reagan and 'the gay question.' These two major murderers so far have gotten away with helping to cause the two major holocausts of modern history. Just as Jews are asked to never forget their Holocaust, I implore all gay people never to forget our holocaust and who caused it and why.

"Ronald Reagan did not even say the word 'AIDS' out loud for the first seven years of his reign. Because of this, some 70 million people, so far, have become infected with HIV/AIDS. I wonder what it feels like to be the son and the wife of a man responsible for over 70 million people so far becoming infected with a virus that has killed over half of us so far. I wonder what it felt like while he was alive to ponder this. For surely he must have thought about it. How could he not? He has been called the consummate actor who came to believe all his lines. Does this not make his legacy even more grotesque? It should. Hitler knew what he was doing. How could Ronald Reagan not have known what he was doing? But of course, no one is writing about this. Reagan too is one of history's gods. So far he has gotten away with murder." - Larry Kramer in a 2004 article reposted today by the Advocate.

World Net Daily: Fourth Horseman Of
The Apocalypse Spotted In Egypt

According to today's top story on World Net Daily, eagle-eyed Christians have spotted the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse riding through a crowd of Egyptian protesters.
The footage, provided by Euronews and subsequently seen on MSNBC, CNN and uploaded over a dozen times to the popular video sharing site YouTube, captures the fiery, violent protests in Cairo this past week … and something else. Between the crowds of protesters and barricades, the video shows a flowing, pale green image that resembles an erect rider atop a horse in Medieval-like barding. The ethereal figure remains for a few moments before floating over protesters' heads and off the screen. The last of the biblical Book of Revelation's Four Horseman of the Apocalyse, the "pale rider" is said to be the bringer of death and the forerunner of "hell" on earth. Is the image from Egypt a fulfillment of Revelation's prophecy?

TRAILER: We Were Here

From a Sundance Film Festival synopsis:
In the early 1970s, in the shadow of the Stonewall riots and the free-love movement, gay men and lesbians flocked to San Francisco to find acceptance. They formed a thriving, tight-knit community until the arrival of AIDS in the early 1980s drove them under siege. Director David Weissman (“The Cockettes” screened at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival) chronicles this transformative era through the stories of five individuals who lived through the best and the worst of it. In the face of unheralded tragedy, these men and women relate how they were affected and the way their community united to help those suffering and prevent further deaths.

Lead Cop In Atlanta Eagle Bar Raid Busted For DUI And Marijuana Possession

The police officer who led the ill-fated raid at the Atlanta Eagle has been arrested for DUI and possession of marijuana.
According to Cobb County Sheriff’s Office booking reports, Bennie Evett Bridges, 41, was stopped Thursday a little before 3 a.m. for speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour and Cobb Police officers subsequently charged him with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana as well as driving under the influence of alcohol. According to APD officials, Bridges is now on administrative leave with pay. Bridges is an investigator in the APD’s vice unit and he spearheaded the department’s investigation into claims that illicit sexual acts were being performed at the Atlanta Eagle in 2009.
RELATED: Nineteen customers and employees of the Atlanta Eagle reported that cops threw them to the filthy floor of the bar during the September 2009 raid and hurled anti-gay slurs at them as they lay there. All defendants were later found not guilty or had their charges dismissed. In December 2010 the city of Atlanta agreed to pay a $1M settlement to victims of the raid.

NORTH CAROLINA: Arson Destroys Home Of Harassed Gay Couple

The Clayton, North Carolina home of a gay couple was destroyed by arson yesterday after the pair had suffered more than a year of anti-gay harassment.
The couple, who did not want to be identified out of fear for their safety, is staying in a motel after fire ripped through the house on New Castle Court, off Guy Road, around 1:30 a.m. Friday. They were out of town when the fire was set. A neighbor reported it. The fire is being investigated as an arson, said Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell, but he said it does not appear to be related to a string of suspicious fires in the area. A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of backlash against her, said there have been at least three separate incidents of anti-gay harassment at the home. A note with derogatory language was left in the mailbox, an anti-gay slur was written on the house with a marker, and the tires of a car parked in the garage were slashed, the neighbor said.
One neighbor spoke to local news, saying, "I felt sick to my stomach. I felt so sorry for the two gentlemen. They lost everything. We do believe that this is a hate crime."

BAHRAIN: 127 Arrested In Gay Party Raid

Bahraini police have arrested 127 people in a raid on a "depraved and decadent gay party" attended by citizens of several Gulf-area nations. Gulf News reports:
Most of the gays were between 18 and 30 years old and one Lebanese and one Syrian were among those arrested following the police bust, Al Ayam daily reported on Friday. Neighbours, complaining about the late night noises emanating from the sports hall in the traditional fishing village, had alerted the police who sent a patrol to verify the claims at around 2.30am. An undercover agent paid the 20 dinar entrance fee and was allowed into the hall where he saw dozens of cross-dressers drinking and smoking shishas. More patrols were called in and 127 people were arrested in the police swoop, the daily said. Initial investigations have revealed that the gays were either Gulf nationals who came to Bahrain for the party or were living in Bahrain and flocked to the hall in Hidd. The organisers are being held separately.
Laws about homosexuality in Bahrain are murky and while private consensual acts are not explicitly criminalized, police have broad discretionary power to make arrests for acts they deem "immoral."

Tears And Rage

The post below this one reminds me of one of the very first I wrote for JMG. Originally posted here on June 8th, 2004.

Yesterday I watched Ronald Reagan's body being ceremoniously placed for viewing in the Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. The honor guard, comprised of all military services, moved with stiff dignity while placing Reagan's flag-draped coffin on its pedestal. The Marine Corps band played Hail To The Chief then My Country 'Tis Of Thee.

Tiny Nancy Reagan was lead in, followed by her children. Other military and governmental dignitaries filed in and were seated behind the Reagan family. And as the service began, as the religious figure began his familiar droning, as the mourners held each other and dabbed their eyes...I found myself....weeping. But I wasn't weeping for Ronald Reagan. I wasn't weeping for Nancy or her kids.

I was weeping for my friends. Friends that died of AIDS during Reagan's presidency. Friends that never had the slightest chance of surviving their illness because Reagan refused to even speak the word AIDS until many years into the epidemic.

I wept for Barney. Barney the party-thrower, the generous host, the bon vivant. Barney, who could make a stranger feel comfortable in a room full of a hundred new people. Barney, who actually got me to climb up and dance on a nightclub's speakers with him. I wept for Barney who died choking from pneumocystis, in the middle of the night, alone.

I wept for Peyman. Peyman, the Iranian student left stranded in Florida when the Shah fell from power. Peyman, the fashion plate with his beautiful black hair and flashing brown eyes, who wore Parachute and WilliWear and always looked fabulous. Peyman, who taught me that Iranians were not Arabs and how to curse in Farsi. I wept for Peyman who died blind, paralyzed, shrieking and demented.

I wept for Nathan. Nathan, the shy Southern boy with the Star Trek obsession. Nathan, who finally afforded me an understanding of the infield fly rule. Nathan, who had an adorable habit of taking a short jump in the air when something pleased him. I wept for Nathan, whose family refused receipt of his remains.

I thought about my little black address book with 'D' for 'deceased' next to so many names. I've had friends tell me it's macabre to keep using it. I don't care. This is all so fucking unfair. I should be sending those guys silly birthday cards about being middle-aged instead of wondering who has their ashes.

As Reagan's funeral proceeded, my tears to turned to anger and back to tears. This was so not fucking right! I wanted this man to suffer more! I wanted his mind fully engaged and aware of every diaper change. I wanted him to endure endless indignities and know the same fear and ostracism and neglect that my friends had. Knowing that his mind had escaped its physical prison, I felt cheated. My revenge was incomplete.

And then I felt shame for thinking that, even about Ronald Reagan.

For the first time that I can recall, yesterday I felt my absence of faith. It's hard to invoke the satisfying image of somebody burning in hell for eternity when you don't actually believe that hell exists.

I finally turned off the television. I thought viewing Reagan's funeral would bring to me a sense of finality. Instead, I was surprised to learn that I can still cry. I didn't think I could anymore. Not like that.

The True Legacy Of Ronald Reagan

Today Alex Pareene notes at Salon that Ronald Reagan was far more concerned about the potential of aliens attacking from outer space than he was about the AIDS pandemic, which he completely ignored. Reagan frequently spoke on the threat from little green men, an issue he brought up at the United Nations and one that he even discussed with Russian premier Mikhail Gorbachev.
If Ronald Reagan was a genuine UFO nutter or simply in thrall to a simplistic sci-fi plot makes no difference to me. But the fact remains that he spent a lot of time talking about spacemen. Spacemen killed, according to my estimates, no Americans, at all, during Reagan's presidency. Reagan never mentioned AIDS until he was directly questioned about it in his second term, and he never gave a public statement on the epidemic until 1987, when 20,000-30,000 people had already died from it. When it came up in press briefings, it was, at first, a subject of humorous cajoling. Later, the president was advised not to say that children couldn't catch AIDS from casual contact. Members of the Reagan inner circle attacked Surgeon General C. Everett Koop for encouraging sex education and condom use. The Centers for Disease Control was underfunded and there was never a comprehensive plan for dealing with the epidemic.
How many of the people in the below clip might be alive today, had Ronald Reagan and his administration acted decisively in the early years of AIDS?

Hawkins Rep: She Wants To Build Bridges

Matthew Rettenmund at Boy Culture is an avid fan of Sophie B. Hawkins so he wrote to her management asking about the singer's coming performance at GOProud's CPAC party. Hawkins' rep responded:
"She is not supporting their beliefs but trying to build a bridge so we can all talk and be humans over party. They invited her to play for free. She said she would, if they recognized she is an artist and is going as an artist not taking sides, but being open for them to enjoy her music as humans. This is very risky for Sophie, she knows it, but she is trying to say lets all reach out our hands and try to find understanding. She is so tired of the hate and I think thought love and music and art could build a bridge. I hope you remain a fan. She is really trying to do something good in the world and I am sure she will address this soon."
Rettenmund: "This is not me saying, 'Ew! Don't play for Republicans!' but me asking why, if she feels the need to build a bridge, she would decide to build the bridge to the furthest point away on the other side, to a group whose leader thinks gay activists are literally worse than terrorists, to a group that pays hate-spewing Ann Coulter (while Sophie plays for free)?"

White House Works With NYC's Ali Forney Center On Homeless LGBT Youth Report

Yesterday the White House Media Office issued a special report on homeless LGBT youth. The report was created by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness and spotlights the work being done by NYC's Ali Forney Center as well as the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit.

The Ali Forney Center comments via press release:
This follows upon recent events over the past eight months which demonstrate unprecedented federal attentiveness and responsiveness to the needs of homeless LGBTQ youth. In June of 2010 the Obama Administration released its Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness, which included homeless LGBTQ youth as a priority population. In October of 2010 the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center was awarded a $13.3 Million five year grant to support foster care programs for LGBTQ youth and the Ali Forney Center was awarded a combined $2.4 Million by three federal agencies over five years to support it's programs for homeless LGBTQ youth.

"I am deeply grateful to have a presidential administration that recognizes the terrible suffering of thousands of LGBTQ youth who have been cast out by their families to the streets of our nation." says Carl Siciliano, Executive Director of the Ali Forney Center. "Prior to this year it was almost impossible for organizations dedicated to homeless LGBT youth to receive federal support, and we are thrilled to see that the Obama Administration is willing to support the work of protecting our most hurt and vulnerable youth".
Read the White House report. An excerpt:
Like many homeless youth, LGBTQ youth either runaway or are forced out of the home due to severe family conflict, abuse, neglect, mental health or physical disabilities. They are more at risk once they are homeless for sexual abuse and exploitation. There is a high incidence of depression, suicide initiations, and other mental health disorders among all youth experiencing homelessness, and chronic physical health conditions are common as are high rates of substance abuse disorders. Yet, in spite of all this, if you’ve ever had the opportunity to hang out with LGBTQ youth in a drop in center or elsewhere, you know they are energetic, funny, thoughtful teenagers who have the same hopes and dreams as their peers.

Lesbian Couple Sues Alleged Arsonist

A lesbian couple in Tennessee has filed a lawsuit against the neighbor they believe burned down their house after repeatedly threatening to kill them.
The Stuttes have been together 16 years, and while they’re not legally married, they did celebrate a civil ceremony at the Unitarian Universalist church in Oklahoma City. The complaint does allege taunts made by Millsaps that specifically targeted the Stuttes’ sexual orientation. For example, a month before the fire, on Aug. 4, they allege, Millsaps, whose double wide mobile home rests about 20 feet from the gate leading to the Stuttes’ property, approached them as they stopped to close their front gate. She poked at the Stuttes, alleges the complaint, and asked them, “Do you know what is better than one dead queer? Two dead queers.” The complaint notes that she then threatened to burn their house down, laughed, and returned to her house.
The FBI has yet to classify the fire as arson and the couple's insurance company has yet to pay their claim for the destroyed house. The suit seeks over $1M for damages and for "intentional infliction of emotional distress and malicious harassment." It also seeks compensation for a $7000 insulin pump they contend the alleged arsonist intercepted from a UPS delivery.

Sarah Palin Files Name Trademark

Sarah Palin has filed applications to trademark her name and the name of the her daughter, Bristol. Maybe they're coming out with their own line of moose shotguns?
It's hard for an individual to trademark their name, but it's not without precedent. Pop singer-songwriter Billy Joel has done it, for example. If Palin's applications are granted, many politicians seeking to keep tighter commercial control of their images may well follow suit. Since President Obama was elected, the White House has openly grumbled about advertisers using Obama's name and likeness to sell products. Last year, Obama aides publicly complained after the Weatherproof Garment Company installed a billboard in Times Square showing Obama wearing one of its jackets on a trip to China. But there was little the administration could legally do, since Obama's image and name aren't legally protected. The billboard was eventually removed—though not because of complaints.
If she gets approval, bloggers should then write Sarah Palin™.

JetBlue Gets Dough For Fast Lane

Yesterday the feds gave over $4M to NYC-based JetBlue so that the airline can transition away from ground radar and towards using GPS for its flights from JFK to Florida and the Caribbean. The new system means JetBlue flights so equipped will be shorter and faster.
Years in the planning, the system known as NextGen is expected to deliver an unprecedented level of precision that the FAA says will relieve air traffic congestion, allow more direct routing on flights, reduce flight delays and promote fuel efficiency. "This is just good business, really, independent of the FAA investment," JetBlue Airways chief executive Dave Barger said Thursday. "I'll be delighted to make the rest of the investment."
All commercial aircraft are required to be on the new system by 2020.

Christianity Outlawed! Now Send Money!

On Wednesday the Southern Poverty Law Center alerted us to the latest campaign by the Traditional Values Coalition, which is scamming money from seniors by claiming that the 2009 Hate Crimes Act outlawed Christianity and classified the Bible as "hate literature." Today Right Wing Watch posts a photo of the TVC's fundraising letter. The Traditional Values Coalition has long been ranked as a hate group by the SPLC.

Gays & Atheists Blamed For Cyclone

"It is very sad that this dark chapter in Australia’s history is led by an atheist Prime Minister in Julia Gillard and an openly homosexual Greens leader, both who have no regard for God nor prayer. Now we have a new crisis brewing in the seas of Australia with Cyclone Bianca in WA just passing through, and Cyclone Yasi in QLD. How many more disasters will it take before our nation, starting from the Prime Minister, would fall on our knees and ask for God’s protection and turn back to Him?" - Pastor Daniel Nalliah, who also blames Australia's recent wildfires on abortion and claims to have ended a 2007 drought through the power of his prayers.

Bryan Fischer: Leftist Media Owes An Apology To Christian Hero Scott Lively

"Even while admitting that the murder was 'still being investigated,' the Boston Globe was quick to lay the blame at Lively's doorstep, who, along with other pro-family experts, visited Uganda in the spring of 2009 to raise awareness of the many social and health pathologies associated with homosexual behavior. The New York Times, the BBC and NPR all interviewed Lively in recent weeks, trying to blame him for what they believe is a rising tide of homicidal anti-gay fervor in Uganda.

"Now the Daily Monitor is reporting that Enock has told police that he killed Kato because Kato had "coerced him into sodomy." Kato had promised to give him a car, a house and money in exchange for sexual favors, but when Kato didn't keep his end of the bargain and continued to attempt to force himself on Enock sexually, he bought a hammer and beat him to death with it. So this is just another horrific and tragic example of the violent domestic abuse that is not uncommon in homosexual liaisons. Research consistently indicates that rates of violence in gay relationships are several times the rate in heterosexual relationships.

"Bottom line: the major media outlets owe Scott Lively an apology of gigantic proportions. This is blood libel, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Their accusations are irresponsible, baseless and tawdry, and show nothing but contempt for honesty and the truth. Will Lively get the apology he deserves? You could die holding your breath waiting for that day to come." - American Family Association radio host Bryan Fischer, predictably buying the story of the murderous Ugandan police.

Email Of The Day - Eugene Delguadio

"Dear Joe, Obamacare forces you to subsidize Homosexuality. And sadly, it shouldn't surprise any of us. There was just no way Barack Obama would craft a 2,000 page monstrosity of a Healthcare Law without paying off his homosexual masters. Top legal experts have determined that this healthcare bill will create a tax penalty of up to $10,680 a year per traditional family ...and at the same time homosexuals will be given a $1,069 annual bonus for living together in sin.

"But as if this bonus for homosexual couples wasn't bad enough, the bill also targets children for special pro-homosexual education programs starting in elementary school. Not only will Sodomy Training Seminars invade our schools, but government healthcare would force healthy Americans like you and me to pay for the treatment of infected homosexuals. HIV treatments, AIDS medications, and the whole slew of Sexually Transmitted Infections that plague the homosexual lifestyle. That's why we have to insist John Beohner defund Obamacare." -Eugene Delgaudio, the self-proclaimed Public Advocate of the U.S., who'd like you to send him money to stop the Homosexual Healthcare Payback.

Delgaudio's last email warned about the Mandatory Homosexual Marriage Act.

New Yorkers Turn Out For David Kato Vigil And Protest At Uganda's UN Mission

Despite the bone-chilling temperatures, a large crowd of LGBT activists, allies, and local politicians stood in the slush and snow tonight near the United Nations to memorialize slain Ugandan activist David Kato, who now stands accused being responsible for his own murder by the Ugandan police.

Speakers included the head of the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission, gay Ugandan nationals, gay clergy, and two NYC council members, all of whom vowed to get the truth about Kato's murder from the Ugandan government, which receives $500 million in U.S. aid annually. Money being paid, it was pointed out, to enable the brutalization and murders of LGBT people.

Not forgotten at the event was the murderous complicity of American and Ugandan evangelicals in this brutal crime and speakers repeatedly spat out the names of Scott Lively, Rick Warren, and Martin Ssempa, all of whom were promised that their names and reputations will forever be linked to this outrage.

After the vigil, candles were lit and the crowd proceeded silently two blocks away to the Uganda Mission, where a Ugandan lesbian activist laid a letter of demands and flowers against a placard depicting Kato which had been propped outside the building's entrance. As that occurred, the hundred or so people behind the barricades shouted up at the windows of Uganda House, "Stop the violence, stop the hate! Do your job, investigate!"

Sarah Palin To Snub CPAC

Sarah Palin has declined the invitation to give the keynote address at next week's CPAC 2011. In previous years, Palin has said she'd attend but never showed up.
Last year, the former Alaska governor turned down an opportunity to speak at the event, reportedly over concerns of being affiliated with CPAC organizer David Keene. In 2008 and 2009, Palin pulled out of plans to address the conservative gathering. "We're disappointed that she wasn't able to make it this year," said Keene through a spokesman on Thursday, ABC News reports. He added that Palin had "expressed interest" in attending the event.
In the past week other Tea Party heavyweights like Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Jim DeMint, and NJ Gov. Chris Christie have all announced their non-attendance at CPAC. None of this has to do with GOProud, right?

Today In Frivolous Lawsuits

Some porn outfit sued in California court to stop the distribution of free online porn. The company wasn't alleging that their content was being stolen, they just don't like the idea of free porn, period.
"The ubiquitous distribution of free adult videos through redtube.com has had a massive negative impact on the business model of adult website proprietors," charged the complaint against Redtube owner Bright Imperial Limited of Hong Kong. "Now that consumers have the ability to watch high quality adult videos for free on redtube.com, fewer are making the choice to pay other adult website proprietors for the same content." Thus, Redtube.com has caused "many millions of dollars of damages to proprietors of adult entertainment websites," including those of the plaintiff in this instance, one Kevin Cammarata of Los Angeles, California. This, he charged, was a violation of California's Unfair Practices Act.
An appeals court has dismissed the case as a SLAPP suit, one that is "intended to censor, intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition."

UPDATE: Despite what some think, this was not a clever bit of guerrilla marketing but a complex case with multiple defendants.

Nobel Peace Prize Nom For WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for the site's "exposure of corruption, war crimes and torture around the world."
Nobel-watcher and Peace Research Institute Oslo Director Kristian Berg Harpviken says he is not surprised WikiLeaks has been nominated and he expects it will receive more than one vote. "WikiLeaks has been on top of the international news headlines for the last 12 months," he said. "It is also something very new in more ways than just bringing interesting news. It is, in fact, newsworthy in and of itself as a phenomenon. It is an interesting and many ways challenging candidate in its own right." A wide range of people are invited to make a peace prize nomination, including politicians, professors, and former laureates.
The wingnuts are gonna really lose their shit.

Ontario Gets Metered Internet Usage

An Ontario internet provider is the first in Canada to impose greatly lowered usage caps on its customers. This move comes in response to the exploding popularity of heavy-bandwidth sites like Netflix. Customers who exceed their contracted usage will page steep fees.
Starting on March 1, Ontario TekSavvy members who subscribed to the 5Mbps plan have a new usage cap of 25GB, "substantially down from the 200GB or unlimited deals TekSavvy was able to offer before the CRTC's decision to impose usage based billing," the message added. By way of comparison, Comcast here in the United States has a 250GB data cap. Looks like lots of Canadians can kiss that kind of high ceiling goodbye. And going over will cost you: according to TekSavvy, the CRTC put data overage rates at CAN $1.90 per gigabyte for most of Canada, and $2.35 for the country's French-speaking region.

Bottom line: no more unlimited buffet. TekSavvy users who bought the "High Speed Internet Premium" plan at $31.95 now get 175GB less per month. "Extensive web surfing, sharing music, video streaming, downloading and playing games, online shopping and email," could put users over the 25GB cap, TekSavvy warns. Also, watch out "power users that use multiple computers, smartphones, and game consoles at the same time."
So not only are some internet providers charging users much more for the same service, they are charging the providers more to deliver that content. What a freekin' racket.

UPDATE: Canadian readers point out that the government is threatening to ban the new billing system.
