Today In Hilarious Hypocrisy

This week Porno Pete paid for a full-page ad in the Washington Times denouncing fellow conservatives for allowing GOProud to attend CPAC. Ignore all THAT. Actually, it's "hateful rad gay lefties" that don't want conservatives talking with gays. Whatever works in the name of feeding Petey's new love affair with the homocons at Gay Patriot, who enthusiastically tweeted back "TRUTH! LOL!" Just so we're clear, Peter LaBarbera can take out full page ads against you, but if anybody else doesn't like you too, they're "hateful radical lefties." OK, then.

Coulter: Gays Are Natural Conservatives

During her keynote at CPAC tonight, Ann Coulter responded to a question about the GOProud kerfuffle by saying, "I am as born again evangelical Christian as they come and I'm a friend of gays." Scattered applause followed. Of course, Coulter's definition of "friend" means opposing her friends' civil rights and calling them "faggots" right to their faces. Coulter then denounced the "radical left" for insisting that all gays joins them, because "gays are natural conservatives." Coulter also claims to have talked GOProud out of supporting same-sex marriage.

If you can bear it, here's the speech that preceded the above question and answer portion.

Ron Paul Wins CPAC 2012 Straw Poll

Whackadoodle libertarian Ron Paul, whose supporters swarm CPAC every year, has unsurprisingly won the convention's 2012 presidential straw poll for the second year in a row. However not to be dismissed in Paul's win is the effect of the absence of the several major conservative groups who boycotted this year over GOProud. Sarah Palin only got 3%.

Tammy Bruce Quits GOProud

Today openly lesbian right-wing radio host Tammy Bruce announced her resignation from GOProud's board of directors. This move comes after widespread wingnut condemnation of GOProud chairman Chris Barron for calling high-profile anti-gay activist Cleta Mitchell a "bigot" in an interview with Metro Weekly. From Bruce's website:
I want to let you know that after being a supporter and serving as Chair of the Advisory Board since May of 2010, I gave Chris Barron and Jimmy LaSalvia my resignation Saturday night. If you search GOProud here at the blog you’ll see the affection with which I’ve held both Chris and Jimmy, and I wish them well. As Independent Conservatives and Tea Party patriots, we have a lot of work to do in the next two years taking our great nation back, and I do look forward to continuing to work with conservatives across the spectrum on the issues with which we all have in common.
Barron's comments will also likely mean that GOProud will not be allowed to attend CPAC 2012, as the newly named head of the convention has taken particular offense.
The new chair of the American Conservative Union, Al Cardenas, today distanced his organization from GOProud, telling FrumForum in an exclusive interview that “it’s going to be difficult to continue the relationship” with the gay conservative organization. Cardenas, who was selected yesterday to replace outgoing chairman David Keene, told FrumForum that he disapproved of GOProud’s response to the furor. “I have been disappointed with their website and their quotes in the media, taunting organizations that are respected in our movement and part of our movement, and that’s not acceptable. And that puts them in a difficult light in terms of how I view things,” said Cardenas.
Today's lesson: If you call a bigot a bigot, you don't get to play with bigots. Seems fair enough.

Eugene Delgaudio: My Raid On CPAC

Our favorite loony tunes anti-gay activist, Eugene Delgaudio, writes today to brag about his "raid" on CPAC yesterday for allowing GOProud's presence.
More than once I had to rush in and rescue minors and other unsuspecting conservatives from these homosexuals who seek to worm their way into positions of trust and authority. They deceive the naive with talk of how big and important they are. They dangle a "career" in politics in front of their eyes and then comes the invite to the alcohol party. I had fliers printed to hand out warning the attendees at CPAC of the lurking danger. Several homosexuals who receive my emails acknowledged me "We got your email already." And I even handed a flyer to Grover Norquist, who is a backer of the homosexuals, a member of GOProud's board of directors, and has access to many elected officials and the mainstream media. He was not amused that I had the nerve to publicly denounce his shilling for the anti-family activists. What part do Radical Homosexuals have in the conservative movement or traditional values? None!
It's a pity he didn't make it to the big alcohol party with Miss Hissey!

HomoQuotable - B. Daniel Blatt

"Hopefully, people will learn from the various experiences of gay people at this year’s CPAC, showing that while most rank-and-file conservatives are willing to work alongside gay conservatives, some are not wiling to do so if such association means the exclusion of social conservatives. Despite some misunderstandings expressed in the comment section to the blog and elsewhere, we do not seek their exclusion. [snip]

"We need to recommit ourselves to cutting the size of the federal government, including ending all earmarks, repealing Obamacare, preventing the judiciary from usurping responsibilities the Constitution clearly delegated to the legislature, confronting the pro-union agenda of the administration (and several Democratic governors) in order to streamline government. In short, it’s time we work with all those willing to reduce the power of the state and increase the freedom of the individual. And for that inclusive agenda, we must roll up our sleeves and work together. The future of our nation is at stake. - Gay Patriot blogger B. Daniel Blatt, announcing that homocons and anti-gay hate groups must work together if the radical left is to be defeated.

Believe it or not, it's going to be a trilogy. Not by coincidence, the release date is April 15th. Also uncoincidentally, the trailer has been released during CPAC.

Terry Lavell - Born This Way

With the same title and a similar theme to yesterday's release by Lady Gaga, this track was written by R&B legends Ashford & Simpson for a musical based on a novel by openly gay author E. Lynn Harris, who died unexpectedly in 2009. Harris' untimely death apparently put a hold on the musical, but promoters are recirculating the below clip to capture some of the Born This Way media frenzy. It's a dynamite track with that classic Ashford & Simpson groove. Play it loud, it's a Saturday!

DNA Spray

A business district in Amsterdam has begun using "DNA spray," an adhesive mist triggered by store clerks, motion detectors, or by remote camera surveillance operators during a robbery or holdup. Chemical markers injected into the mist identify the precise time and location of the incident.
“The procedure is simple: during a holdup a nebula of invisible liquid with a synthetic DNA code is spread in the space. the liquid attaches itself to the clothes and skin of the perpetrator and cannot simply be washed off. DNA-spray is practically invisible to the human eye, but lights up under UV-light. Suspects with traces of DNA-spray are easily traceable to the scene of the crime for the police.”
The above-linked Dutch blogger worries that DNA spray could be used by governments to identify the attendees at political protests.

HAWAII: Civil Unions Pass In House!

The Hawaii House has just approved its civil unions bill by a vote of 31-19!
The bill now goes back to the Senate, which passed a similar version of the measure last month. If the Senate agrees to changes in the bill made by the House, the measure would go to Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who supports civil unions legislation. Senate Bill 232 would grant same-sex and heterosexual couples the ability to enter into a civil union with all of the rights, protections, benefits and responsibilities of traditional marriage.

The House changes — recommended by the state Attorney General's Office — clarify that because civil unions will not be recognized under federal law, certain provisions of the Internal Revenue Code that apply to husbands and wives in Hawaii would apply with the same force and effect to partners in civil unions. Family Court will also have jurisdiction in matters of annulment, divorce and separation in civil unions, as the court does over marriages.
Just one more step!

At Last Night's GOProud Party

Over at Slate, Dave Weigel has recapped last night's GOProud party at CPAC, which sported an open bar sponsored by the Poker Players Alliance, a group that lobbies lawmakers for the legalization of internet gambling. I don't recall having seen online poker on GOProud's 2011 agenda, but whatevs, because this is the best part of Weigel's review:
A word about Sophie B. Hawkins. Michael Steele, who was chairman of the RNC until last month, showed up at the party and stayed a while. Right before I showed up, in an exchange witnessed by several people who described it to me, Steele met Hawkins. She explained her political philosophy to him. "I'm not a conservative," said Hawkins, "but I'd like to fuck Sarah Palin." Steele reacted quickly. "Well, she's very attractive," he said.
How about it, ladies? Could you?

Pentagon Issues DADT Repeal Plan

Servicemembers United is pleased:
"The Repeal Implementation Plan prepared for the Secretary of Defense lays out a comprehensive and deliberate path forward for implementing this policy change throughout the force," said Alexander Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicemembers United and a former multi-lingual Army interrogator who was discharged under DADT. "In typical military fashion the plan is quite thorough and some steps may seem unnecessary or redundant, but overall we believe this plan continues to show a good faith effort on the part of the Department of Defense to swiftly move forward with training, certification, and repeal."
Here's the entire implementation plan. As noted above, it appears quite exhaustive. Does anything noteworthy jump out at you?

Gay Culture Watch: Glee Airs In Cuba

Dubbed or subtitled episodes of Glee routinely air in Latin America, but in what some say signals the continuing expansion of respect and rights in Cuba, a state-run television channel has now added the show. Over at Blabbeando, Andres Duque translates one local review:
What draws our attention is how the series treats the case of Kurt, an extremely effeminate gay, who showcases the most divine of extravagant fashions and even reaches the tone of a soprano when singing. With his 'bothersome' look (to those who are the most homophobic), he proudly confronts his way of being, and challenges the world with his amply demonstrated talents and virtues, even in the harsh game of football. His father, an apparently dumb mechanic, gives us a masterclass in sensitivity and humanity in defending his son against any discriminatory attempts based on his physical appearance, his mannerisms or his sexual orientation.

For all these lessons that reach the viewer in a fresh and entertaining way and which do so much good when exposed to society, let "Glee" be welcome on the Cuban screens. Although it's a shame that it has to be a foreign series - and from the United States to top it all off - that brings clear and powerful messages in regards to diversity. How much longer do we have to wait for these type of messages, but "made in Cuba?"
Whether you're a fan of the show or not, its unprecedented positive effect cannot be denied.

PhoboQuotable - Jennifer Norse

"Don’t try to tell me 'nothing so terrible has happened in Massachusetts.' Redefining marriage redefines the way in which generations relate to one another. It is ludicrous to believe that we would feel the full impact of such a change in a few years. It will take at least a generation, a full thirty years or more, before the full effects of redefining marriage work themselves out throughout the social system.

"The only argument you have is so-called 'equality.' You have taken a venerable American concept and twisted it out of recognition. Equality used to mean limiting the power of the state to make irrelevant distinctions among citizens. In your hands, equality has become a battering ram for smashing every aspect of social life that has any hint of sexual differentiation. No more mothers and fathers, only Parent 1 and Parent 2." - Ruth Institute bigot Jennifer Norse, testifying for NOM at Wednesday's hearings in Rhode Island.

Michell is the virulently anti-gay DC-based attorney largely behind the campaign to boycott CPAC over GOProud's attendance. Earlier this week, Pam Spaulding noted that Mitchell's hatred for gay people is probably due to the fact that her husband left her for another man over 20 years ago.

They're just so determined to get these homosexual special rights delivered to this community that two of them [who] are up for re-election [are] not even running for re-election -- probably because they know they would never be re-elected." - Donna Lippoldt, head of the Kansas Family Policy Council, announcing plans to oust the backers of the brand-new LGBT rights law in tiny Manhattan, Kansas.

Brian Brown On GOProud

"NOM's position on GOProud and CPAC is being misstated by many in the media and particularly even the conservative media. We want to clear the record. We went to CPAC last year in good faith, knowing that GOProud was also attending. It was at CPAC we learned from repeated interviews they gave that GOProud leaders favor gay marriage. It's not who people are, it's the positions they take that concern us.

"Now Erick Erickson points out that some key GOProud leaders also used to work for Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, which may be of concern to many in the pro-life community as well. At NOM, we've repeatedly invited all people, including gay people, who support marriage as the union of husband and wife to join us in this great fight. There probably aren't a large number of gay folks who want to defend marriage, but they do exist and we welcome their participation at NOM, CPAC, or anywhere else." - NOM president Brian Brown, saying they don't mind gays at CPAC, as long as it's gay that think like them.

Brown is apparently unaware that GOProud is actually anti-choice and believes marriage should left to the voters of the states, both of which are NOM's positions.

COLORADO: Cop Resigns Over Anti-Gay Trolling On Local News Sites

A 13-year Denver-area police officer has resigned after being exposed as the author of numerous anti-gay and racist comments left on the websites of local news outlets.
Lt. Jeff Egnor resigned Tuesday after Douglas County officials confronted him about hundreds of postings on the 7NEWS website, www.thedenverchannel.com, and the KUSA-TV website, according to Undersheriff Tony Spurlock. "A large portion of it was very shocking and inappropriate racial comments, homophobic comments, statements of that nature," Spurlock said. "Our message is while you're here we want you to do your job and serve the community the very best that you can. If you have concerns politically, what happens in the world, you have to do it in an appropriate way and not relate it to this county sheriff's office." Posting under the screen name "Abu Mybutt", Egnor commented on various stories from police shootings to the elimination of the "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy that will let gay soldiers serve openly in the military.
Most of Egnor's postings were made on work time from police computers.

Bedbugs At CPAC Host Hotel

Wonkette reports that the host hotel of this year's CPAC convention has a long record of complaints for bedbug infestation. Apparently the blood-suckers have attacked guests very recently and are probably still there, waiting on their queen, Crazy Eyes.
The three-legged stool of conservatism is strong and united at CPAC! Yes, as intelligent and alive as a small piece of furniture. However, the stool may not last long, as the hotel they chose, the Marriott Wardham Park, seems to currently be infested with bedbugs. Yes, we knew that, but are there blood-sucking insects there too? Har har har. “I woke up seeing the bed bugs on the bed, on my shirt and even on the bed that I am not using. Unbelievable!!! American Family Association Scrubs Bryan Fischer's Rant On Native Americans

On Tuesday, American Family Association radio host Bryan Fischer announced that Native Americans were "morally disqualified from sovereign control of American soil" because they had rejected attempts to convert them to Christianity. That may have finally been just a little too extreme for Fischer's bosses at the AFA. Right Wing Watch reports:
The Native American Rights Fund said Fischer’s comments are “not worth dignifying with a reply,” and AFA blogger Elijah Friedeman called Fischer’s views “repulsive.” It appears that the AFA is now expunging Fischer’s vicious article on Native Americans, along with Freideman’s denunciation - they have even removed his column from Renew America where it was also posted. Fischer’s original article has been removed from the AFA’s Focal Point blog (while leaving his radio commentary on YouTube); similarly, Friedeman’s reaction was taken down from the AFA’s website and is no longer listed on his blog either.

Still remaining is Fischer's column calling for Muslims to be banned from the military, his column describing gay activists as domestic terrorists, his column demanding an overturn of our democracy in favor of Biblical law, his column calling for the abolishing of high school, and his column recommending that homosexuals be rounded up and put in concentration camps. The American Family Association is perfectly OK with all of that.

Quote Of The Day - Tony Perkins

"The demand by GOProud and other homosexual activists to legalize homosexual marriage undermines the institution of marriage, in that it insists that consent and affection are the only two criteria for marriage. In doing so, GOProud joins with its liberal homosexual allies in opening the door for all manner of unions (polyamory and polygamy, for example) premised on the same criteria, and calls on conservatives to accept a definition of marriage that is intrinsically illogical and defiant of rudimentary biology. [snip]

"Any group that purports to be conservative should not attempt to destroy the foundations of conservatism itself, and we will not aid and abet such groups by partnering with them. Attacking both marriage and the military is a blunt-edged assault on the two institutions that, with churches and synagogues, compose the superstructure of our national life. On them hang the future of our children, our economy, and our security. On these things, true conservatives must never waver nor compromise." - Family Research Council head Tony Perkins, who obviously hasn't read GOProud's actual agenda.

Canada's Parliament Approves Transgender And Gender Identity Protections

By a vote of 143-135, the Canadian Parliament has narrowly approved a bill granting transgender and gender identity anti-discrimination protections nationwide. The bill now goes to the Senate, where it faces a tough battle. Via Dented Blue Mercedes:
Bill C-389 now goes to the Senate, where it must go through three readings. Readings in the Senate don’t take months-to-years as they do for Private Members Bills in Parliament. However, as far as I know, a Senator still needs to be found who is willing to bring the bill to the floor. There could be some perils in the Senate. In the past, the Senate has mostly just ratified and tweaked legislation passed by Parliament, but as Harper has packed more conservatives into the Senate (rather than reforming it to create an elected Senate, which he once campaigned on), it has been sometimes used more undemocratically. In one recent such move, he used a lack of attendance of Liberal senators to kill a climate change bill. It is also still entirely possible that an election call could kill the bill before it is enacted into law. What would happen then is that as a community, we would need to press candidates and parties to pledge to finish what was started, and also to address other glaring omissions such as the absence of sex / gender from the hate crimes provisions from the Criminal Code of Canada.

Mississippi Considers License Plate Honoring Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard

Mississippi is considering issuing a license plate honoring one of the founding Grand Wizards of the Ku Klux Klan. SRSLY.
Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, notorious for leading a massacre of black Union soldiers and leading the KKK in its early days, would appear on the plates in 2014 if the group Sons of Confederate Veterans gets its way. The organization is sponsoring a series of specialty plates over the next four years to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. This year's plate features the last home of Confederate president Jefferson Davis. The state's chapter of the NAACP strongly criticized the call to honor Forrest, who led several battles in Mississippi during the war. "He should be viewed in the same light that we view Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden," Derrick Johnson, the president of the NAACP in Mississippi, told The Associated Press, adding that the Klan was a "terrorist group."

Eugene Delguadio: Homosexual Predators Are Running Wild In The Halls Of CPAC

Yesterday "Public Advocate For The Unites States" Eugene Delguadio warned us about all those radical homosexual pirates running amok on the streets of Tampa. Today he writes with the breathless news that gay predators are lurking the halls of CPAC, seeking to take advantage of drunk underage conservatives.
For years, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was the scene of exciting speakers throughout the day. But at night there have always been dozens of alcohol parties. These parties are viewed as festive opportunities to meet conservatives from all over the country in a more social atmosphere. It was not unusual for me to have to escort adult predators, even some openly homosexual men out of these parties because they could not resist the urge to prey upon the younger teenage victims at their disposal in a vulnerable place a long distance from their home and without their parents’ presence.

These days the predator homosexuals use political cover to gain access to their intoxicated victims. As I’ve told you before, the Conservative Political Action Conference has been infiltrated by the Homosexual Lobby. Radical Homosexual front groups like “GOProud” will be in attendance to push their perversion on young conservatives. This sort of predator behavior was illegal and immoral back when I had to clean house and condemn them. And it is still illegal and immoral to create an atmosphere in which those same misdeeds could occur again. Parents should be warned and frankly the authorities at CPAC should be told that there are minor age students who need to be looked after and protected.
Eugene closes today by noting that if you will only send him a "prayerful contribution" of "$10, $25, $50 or even $100," he can continue his noble work of stopping predatory homosexuals. And pirates! Don't forget the pirates.

GOP Sen. Jon Kyl (AZ) To Retire

Powerful three-term GOP Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (AZ) is expecting to announce today that he will not seek reelection in 2012. That improves the prospect that Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napalitano will win his open seat next year.
Polls in the state showed Kyl comfortably ahead of all Democratic challengers, including Napolitano, at this stage of the race. The question now is whether Napolitano will be more likely to run for the now-open seat. National and Arizona Democrats certainly hope she will run. With the Democratic majority at a perilous (for them) 53-47, any US Senate seat that might switch from Republican to Democrat will attract the full resources of the Democratic establishment.
Last year Time Magazine named Kyl one of the "100 most influential people in the world."

We Heading For Android Marriage, People!

So says Robert Broadus of Protect Marriage Maryland, whom you may recall for his map of the United States which designates the states that are most defying of God for their laws on same-sex relationships. On the upside, the off switch on a robot husband could be quite handy.

Iowa Rep. Dwayne Alons: Normal People Live Longer Because They're Not Gay

Think Progress blogger Igor Volsky cornered Iowa marriage repeal sponsor Rep. Dwayne Alons to ask him if he agrees with local anti-gay activists that "same-sex marriage is worse for public health than smoking." His response:
Well, look at all that has been spent, you know, with the AIDS and with the issues related to the dying at an early age. I think life, longevity, of a lot of these folks is below 50, when you know, the normal people that do not enter into that kind of relationship, their either late into their 70s or early 80s for longevity. A lot more actual productive years and contributing to society.
Here's Volsky's clip, which is getting play on local TV.

KANSAS: "Little Apple" Gets LGBT Rights

The small town of Manhattan, Kansas, known locally as the "Little Apple," has narrowly approved a sweeping LGBT rights ordinance by a vote of 3-2. This was the second required vote for the bill which was first approved by the same margin in December. As I noted at that time, the vote was hotly followed across major anti-gay websites as a possible harbinger of the continued march for equality out of the big cities and into the heartland. Manhattan is now the first town in Kansas to include gender identity among its protections. Congratulations are due the local activists who worked so hard on this breakthrough!

NY Gov. Cuomo To "Push For Marriage"

NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday that he will ask the state legislature to take up the issue of same-sex marriage before its current session ends this June.
His pledge was greeted warmly by gay-rights activists, who have waited with some uncertainty to see whether Mr. Cuomo, faced with a daunting battle over the budget, would make a charged social issue like legalizing same-sex marriage a priority. Legislation to do that has repeatedly passed the State Assembly, which is dominated by Democrats. But in December 2009, it failed in the State Senate, which was then also controlled by Democrats, by a vote of 38 to 24, an unexpectedly wide margin. It is not immediately obvious how the legislation would fare markedly better this year, given that the composition of the Senate, which is now controlled by Republicans, has not changed significantly since the last vote.
GOP state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos says that he won't obstruct a vote on same-sex marriage, although his spokesman says the GOP has "more pressing issues" to consider.

UPDATE: Rep. Christopher Lee (R) Resigns After Craigslist Adultery Scandal

UPDATE: GOP Rep. Chistopher Lee (NY) resigned tonight "effectively immediately" in the light of the scandal detailed below. Lee sent Fox News a short statement announcing his resignation and expressing regret "for the embarrassment caused to my wife and family."

Gawker has posted the Craigslist ad of married GOP Rep. Christopher Lee (R-NY), who has allegedly been using the site's "Women Seeking Men" section to seek out adulterous hook-ups in the Washington DC area. The gossip site has posted screen shots of numerous emails purportedly exchanged between Lee and a woman he angered by lying about his marital status.
Yesterday, we reached out to Rep. Lee, whose support for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and vote to reject federal abortion funding suggests a certain comfort with publicly scrutinizing others' sex lives. A spokesman for the Congressman confirmed that the email address belonged to Lee, and that he had deleted his Facebook account because our initial inquiry had him fretting about "privacy." (A screenshot of his account before it vanished is at right.)

So did the married Republican prowl Craiglist looking for hook ups? After first telling us that he couldn't comment until we forwarded every single email in question, a request we refused—shouldn't Lee know if he's corresponded with women on Craigslist?—Lee's spokesman eventually announced that the Congressman believed he'd been hacked, and provided an email he claims Lee sent to his staff about the security breach on January 21.
As noted above, Lee was among the U.S. House members who voted to retain DADT. His position on other LGBT rights such as same-sex marriage appears to be unknown at the moment.

Metro Weekly On GOProud

The Metro Weekly cover story on GOProud and the CPAC boycott has been posted online. Reporter Chris Geidner does a great job delving into the philosophy of GOProud and who their allies and enemies are. You should read the entire piece, but naturally I'll excerpt a bit with a quote from me in it.
''The problem is that the gay left has decided what qualifies as pro-gay and what qualifies as anti-gay, and a whole bunch of the stuff that they think qualifies as pro-gay, I don't think has anything to do with being pro-gay,'' says Barron. "And, a whole bunch of stuff that they think is anti-gay, I don't think is anti-gay at all." Barron sees his mission as changing that. ''I think that, over time, obviously, people's position on gay issues is evolving, and I think it helps to have a gay voice out there that says, 'You don't have to be with them on all the things they say you have to be with them on.'''

Saying that's ''one of the things that drives the left crazy,'' Barron becomes angered when describing the complaint that GOProud is ''providing cover to our enemies,'' as gay left blogger Joe Jervis (Joe. My. God.) – a near-constant critic of GOProud – puts it. Barron isn't having it. ''No, we're not giving cover to bigots," he argues. "What we're doing is separating the people who don't agree with the left-wing agenda from the real bigots. You can be against ENDA and hate crimes and federal safe schools legislation and not be a bigot. If you're Tony Perkins, you're a bigot. You're against all of that stuff not because of any federalist reasons, but actually because you're just a nasty, anti-gay bigot.'' Jervis defends his tactics against GOProud, saying, ''What they're actively advocating is blockage of some pretty critical LGBT rights that the movement has only begun to scratch the surface of.''

Did Maggie Backfire In Maryland?

One Maryland state Senator says he may have changed his mind after hearing the testimony of Maggie Gallagher and other anti-gays yesterday. But not in the direction intended.
Baltimore County Sen. James Brochin found the testimony Tuesday by opponents of gay marriage "troubling," and said this morning that he may support the bill. The Baltimore County Democrat had previously said he was against same-sex marriage. "The demonization of gay families really bothered me," Brochin said. "Are these families going to continue to be treated by the law as second class citizens?" The change adds Brochin to a group of six other senators who have either not decided how they are going to vote or declined to declare their intentions publicly, according to a Sun review. (See list of Senators' positions after the jump.) Twenty senators have said they will support the bill; 24 votes are needed for passage.

Bigot Of The Day - David Horowitz

"What has the Arab world contributed except terror? The theocratic, repressive Arabic states do no significant science, no significant arts and culture. We already have a lot of infiltration of Islamic jihadist doctrines into our K-12 school systems. The teachers unions have ruined our K-12 schools. These unions are very left-wing and they encourage Palestinian terrorists to come to the school and indoctrinate students." - Wingnut commentator David Horowitz, who is furious that a Dallas-area school system will be teaching classes in Arabic.

PhoboQuotable - GA Rep. Bobby Franklin

"The Bible says homosexuality is a capital offense. You want someone with unrepentant criminal behavior [in the military]? And it's not just that, neither should adulterers, neither should thieves, neither should a lot of things. The church is full of sinners, but we're told in 1st Corinthians it rattled off the homosexual, the adulterer, the thief, the liar, and such were some of you, but you've been washed, you've been justified and so forth. It's not what you were. You're not punishing a thought. But do you want an unrepentant drug dealer in the military? Same thing." - GOP Georgia state Rep. Bobby Franklin, who has also sponsored a bill requiring the state to transact all its business in gold and silver coins, as the Constitution stipulates.

Coming Later Today From Metro Weekly

The GOProud/CPAC kerfuffle is the cover story for today's Metro Weekly, which should appear online by the end of the day. Reporter Chris Geidner interviewed me for about an hour on Monday, so we have to see how much of my take was, uh, printable. Here's the teaser, via press release:
GOProud has a fight on its hands. From the left, right and middle, organizations and activists argue with, debate and even ignore the gay conservative group that’s now heading into its second year at CPAC, the annual conservative conference. But – in the conservative arena that is the group’s aim – GOProud is winning, as an attempted boycott because of the group’s CPAC participation fizzled and the group is making serious inroads in the conservative movement. From longtime conservative activists like Grover Norquist to new media names like Andrew Breitbart, GOProud is grabbing attention – and friends – in the conservative movement. Metro Weekly senior political writer Chris Geidner talks with GOProud, allies and critics as CPAC gets under way – and as GOProud looks to the future.

SOUTH CAROLINA: New Book Accuses GOP Governor Nikki Haley Of Adultery

Tea Party-backed South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley was dogged by accusations of extramarital affairs during her successful 2010 campaign, prompting her to declare that she'd resign if the charges were ever proven true. Today a man who claims to have had an affair with Haley has published "steamy details" of their encounters and has dared Haley to sue him for libel. Here's a terribly-written excerpt:
We never took our clothes off that first night, but the physical relationship between us progressed much faster than I expected. After sliding the front seats of her SUV as far back as they would go, Nikki climbed on top of me – rubbing her crotch back and forth over the growing bulge in my pants while I groped her ass and ran my hands through her hair and up and down her back. John Mayer’s “Slow Dancing In a Burning Room” played on her CD changer. Nikki and I kissed even harder and heavier than we had before (away from the lights of the Vista, we weren’t worried about people seeing us here), and at one point I slid my hands under her turtleneck and felt her breasts over the black bra she was wearing.
Haley is the first female governor of South Carolina and the second Indian-American to be elected as a state governor. She is an adamant opponent of same-sex marriage and toes the teabagger line on other social issues.

Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) To Retire

First-term Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) announced today that he will not seek reelection in 2012.
Webb's decision, long anticipated by many in Virginia politics, will make his seat more difficult to hold for his party. Ex-Sen. George Allen (R), who lost the seat in 2006 to Webb, is running to win it back, and a handful of other GOP candidates are also running. Some Democrats hope ex-Gov. Tim Kaine will decide to run for the seat, but he has given no indication yet that he is interested.
Out of 33 Senate seats up for bids in 2012, 23 are presently held by Democrats. That may not bode well for Dems holding their majority.

Freedom To Marry will launch a national ad campaign on Valentine's Day titled "Why Marriage Matters." Via press release:
“Across the country the thinking of many Americans, from the president to the people next door, continues to – as President Obama put it – ‘evolve’ toward support for same-sex couples joining in the freedom to marry. HAWAII: Civil Unions Advances In House

Last month Hawaii's civil unions bill passed in the state Senate. And last night an 11-2 vote moved the bill out of committee and to the full House for a vote expected to be made in the next week or so.
The state House Judiciary Committee voted last night to approve a civil-unions bill with amendments to ensure that the relationships are recognized in the tax code and are under the jurisdiction of family court. "It's still fast-tracked. I think the Senate now has the opportunity just to agree to these amendments that probably should have been considered when it was first passed," Rep. Gil Keith-Agaran (D, Kahului-Paia), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said after the 11-2 vote.
