Asshat Of The Day - Matthew Vadum

"Why are left-wing activist groups so keen on registering the poor to vote? Because they know the poor can be counted on to vote themselves more benefits by electing redistributionist politicians. Welfare recipients are particularly open to demagoguery and bribery. Registering them to vote is like handing out burglary tools to criminals. It is profoundly antisocial and un-American to empower the nonproductive segments of the population to destroy the country -- which is precisely why Barack Obama zealously supports registering welfare recipients to vote. Encouraging those who burden society to participate in elections isn't about helping the poor. It's about helping the poor to help themselves to others' money. It's about raw so-called social justice. It's about moving America ever farther away from the small-government ideals of the Founding Fathers." - Matthew Vadum, writing for American Thinker.

Uganda Health Minister: Pray AIDS Away

Uganda's new minister of health claims that prayer cures AIDS. And surprise surprise, she's also a backer of the "Kill Gays Bill" and is supported by American evangelicals. All are complicit in the deaths of any Ugandan who rejects medical treatment for AIDS.
In May 2011 Dr. Christine Ondoa was chosen as the new head of Uganda's Ministry of Health. The position will give Ondoa authority over a significant portion of Uganda's foreign HIV/AIDS mitigation funding, which in the year 2010 included over $270 million dollars from the United States. Along with her role as a medical professional, Christine Ondoa also serves as pastor in the Life Line Ministries of apostle Julius Peter Oyet, one of the most powerful clerics leading Uganda's ongoing crusade against gay rights. Since her appointment as Health Ministry head, Ondoa has promoted the claim, an established tenet of Peter Wagner's apostolic movement, also advanced by Oyet's Life Line Ministries, that HIV/AIDS can be cured through prayer.

LONDON: Openly Gay Former Police Chief Brian Paddick Nominated For Mayor

Britain's Liberal Democrats have nominated former cop Brian Paddick as their choice for mayor of London. Until he left the force, Paddick was the highest-ranked openly gay police officer in Britain.
Tonight, Mr Paddick said: “I hope to visit every local party in London, to meet the activists whose support we rely on year after year and to raise as much money as possible for the campaign ahead. I know from personal experience how tough the GLA [Greater London Assembly] Elections are for us as a party and next year will be no exception. I promise to devote myself full-time between now and May to securing the best possible result for the Liberal Democrats and with your help, we can deliver the best result we have ever had in the history of the GLA elections.”
Paddick finished a distant third in the 2008 mayoral election. Paris, Berlin, and Houston are the biggest cities in the world with openly gay mayors currently in office.

Liberty Counsel: All Gays Are Pedophiles

"We know that pedophilia, which was the original Greek they say it’s ‘love of’ but of course it isn’t, it’s ‘lust for’ boys. And there’s a strong, clear, cross-cultural, historical reality, people don’t want to do deal with, but the propaganda has been loud and strong to deny the fact, the aim of homosexual males and now increasingly females is not to have sex with other old guys and get married but to obtain sex with as many boys as possible. That’s the reality. I wish it weren’t, but it is." - Liberty University law professor Judith Reisman, speaking on Matt Barber's Liberty Counsel radio show.

PhoboQuotable - Dr. Keith Ablow

"I advise parents to not allow their children to watch the episodes in which Chaz appears. [snip] Chaz Bono should not be applauded for asserting she is a man (and goes about trying to look like one) any more than a woman who believes she will be happier without arms, has them removed and then continues to assert that she was right all along—her self-concept was that of a double amputee. Now, all is well. Chaz Bono should not be applauded any more than someone who, tragically, believes that his species, rather than gender, is what is amiss and asks a plastic surgeon to build him a tail of flesh harvested from his abdomen. If only a plastic surgeon would acquiesce, all would be well." - Dr. Keith Ablow, writing for Fox News.

September 17th: Day Of Rage

From their website:
On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people to flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices and we will not leave until that demand has been met. Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.

MTA To Run Nostalgia Train

New York City's MTA has found a commercial sponsor for this year's Nostalgia Train event, during which restored and historic trains run on weekends.
Starting on Saturday, September 3rd an authentic vintage 1920’s train will run on the express 2/3 track in Manhattan throughout September (specifically, from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays). Originally operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) system, the train began service back in 1917 and will once again be operational. Customers who have the opportunity to ride the vintage train will be transported back in time to the Prohibition era with authentic details such as rattan seats, ceiling fans and drop sash windows, as well as a custom branded interior featuring Boardwalk Empire-inspired period artwork.
It's important to note that these old trains have no air conditioning or heat, which is likely why the event runs in September.

HRC Denounces King Mistrial

Just in from Joe Solmonese:
“It is disappointing that the criminal justice system has failed to bring closure to the family, friends and community that loved Lawrence. In the wake of the mistrial, and in honor of Lawrence, we will continue our efforts to prevent these types of tragedies by working with school districts across our nation to stamp out the ignorance and prejudice that led to Lawrence’s death. It’s up to the adults around children to call out that early behavior and prejudice, and to explain that the differences among us are part of what makes us strong: that being different is not something to attack, but to appreciate. If Lawrence or Brandon had lived in that world, their lives might not have collided in tragedy and death.”

Asshat Of The Day - Rep. Duncan Hunter

Rep. Duncan Hunter has failed several times in legislative attempts to thwart the repeal of DADT. Now he wants to pass a bill making it legal for straight troops to harass gay ones. SRSLY.
The draft bill prepared by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran who served as a Marine Corps officer before being elected to Congress, does not prevent repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy by the end of September, but it would require the services to “ensure that a member of the Armed Forces under their jurisdiction is not pressured to approve of another person’s sexual conduct if that sexual conduct is contrary to the personal principles of the member.” Essentially, this would mean that military people have to accept the presence of gays in the military but they would not have to like it, said an aide familiar with the legislation.
And by "not have to like it," he means "totally free to abuse gay soldiers without fear of reprimand from superiors."

Beware The Dangers Of Emo-Porn

Focus On The Family warns women that the "emotional porn" of soap operas and romance novels only sets them up with unrealistic expectations of how men should behave in real life. Don't expect real men in the real world to be emotionally available! Really!
Just as wives rightly complain when compared to the artificially created women of Internet porn, men should complain when compared to the artificial men of daytime television. In the real world where real men burn through a lot of emotional battery life to make a real living, being expected to behave like men who don’t exist is more than wrong. It’s cruel. Emo-porn creates caricatures in the minds and hearts of wives. Most men just aren’t and cannot be that attentive, especially in marriage where responsibilities to provide weigh heavy upon them. Husbands are quietly deemed unresponsive and uncaring when compared to emotionally dexterous hunks of daytime lore, chat rooms, celebrity rags, and romance novels. Thus a secretive and snowballing form of marital discontent is born and nurtured.

ALASKA: Anchorage Tries Again With New LGBT Non-Discrimination Referendum

In 2009 the Anchorage Assembly approved a bill banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The mayor promptly vetoed it. Activists are now attempting to take the issue to the ballot box.
One Anchorage wants voters to add "sexual orientation or transgender identity" to the list, said the group's spokesman, Trevor Storrs. "It's a new name for a very old cause that we've all been working toward, which is the same legal protections for all. It's been going on for decades," Storrs said. "What this initiative does is ensures that the gay and transgender Alaskans, who work hard and play by the rules, will have the exact same legal protections as any other Anchorage resident."
You may recall that Christianists groups staged many large and noisy protests to the previous bill.

EQCA: We'll Lose SB 48 At Ballot

The new head of Equality California says that the prospect of thwarting a repeal of the LGBT education bill does not look good.
It may not be what the LGBT community wants to hear, but Equality California Executive Director Roland Palencia was quite blunt on a conference call with reporters last week when he acknowledged that should the referendum to overturn Senate Bill 48, the FAIR Education Act, make it to the ballot, we will lose. "The prospects are not good if this gets to the ballot," Palencia said. "I am not under any illusion." Right now the anti-gay groups that spearheaded Proposition 8 are gathering signatures to get the SB 48 referendum on the ballot next year. They have until October 12 to collect 504,760 valid signatures. According to EQCA and its coalition partners, much of that work is currently taking place in churches – no surprise there – but the prospect of hired signature gatherers sprouting up outside big box stores in the final push is very real.

Hung Jury In Larry King Murder

A mistrial may be declared in the trial of Brandon McInerney after jurors could not agree on how to convict him for shooting to death openly gay classmate Larry King. [UPDATE: The judge has now declared a mistrial.]
Defense attorney Scott Wippert and co-counsel Robyn Bramson didn’t dispute that McInerney killed King. But they argued he was pushed to an emotional breaking point by King’s attentions toward him and the school’s failure to rein in King’s conduct. They also appeared to reach out for jury sympathy by calling several of McInerney’s relatives to the stand to testify to the abuse the young boy suffered at the hands of his drug-abuser father. McInerney was a boy who couldn’t cry, because if he did his father would smack him in the face and tell him to take it like a man, his aunts testified. Other family members said the father seemed to delight in humiliating his son in public. The father died from a fall while his son was incarcerated. Wippert told jurors that his client killed King but should be found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, not murder. In closing arguments, he implied that McInerney should not ever have been put in front of them because the act happened when was a youth.
Prosecutors have not yet revealed plans for a re-trial, should one be necessary.

Hate Groups Sue Feds Over DOMA

The anti-gay Judicial Watch and the Family Research Council have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice, demanding that the DOJ release all internal documents and emails relating to the decision to stop defending DOMA. Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton:
"You know, they made this decision, and based on the timing of certain court filings it looks like it was made in concert with the homosexual activists and those who are seeking to redefine marriage. We just want to figure out what's going on. And our view, generally, is that this Justice Department is an arm of the political left and the activist groups and I suspect the reason we can't get documents about the decision-making and their communications with some of the notorious folks involved in this gay marriage debate means they have something to hide."
Tony Perkins: "We have serious concerns that the Justice Department wants to hide evidence that it was doing the bidding of campaign donors and homosexual activists from whom Obama will need assistance for his reelection."

In the spring, the Tea Party-dominated Texas legislature upped the speed limit on some highways to 85 mph, a change that went into effect today. Insurance companies are very displeased.
"Obviously, the two things that kill most people on our highways are speed and alcohol. Increasing it to 85, or even 75, will have a dramatic impact on the death and injury rate on those highways where it's implemented," said Jerry Johns, a spokesman for the Southwestern Insurance Information Service. He said drivers already exceed 70 mph highway speed limits. "But 85 mph is simply too fast to drive even on a flat road. Any little hitch can cause an accident at that speed. There is still traffic on those roads, and to drive 85 mph is simply ludicrous," he said.

Dan Choi's Trial Suspended

In November noted DADT activist Dan Choi was arrested with a dozen others after failing to comply with a police order to unshackle themselves from the White House fence. All of those arrested accepted a plea bargain agreement with sentences of six months probation. But not Choi, whose trial on the charge began this week. Yesterday the trial's judge suspended the proceedings after the federal government was accused of malicious prosecution. According to his lawyer, Choi was arrested because of the subject of his protest, not his actions.
Magistrate Judge John M. Facciola said the testimony presented at trial suggested that "the nature of his speech or what he said," meant Choi was prosecuted differently, according to a transcript of the proceedings. As a result of Facciola's statements, an attorney for the government, Angela George, said she planned to have the judge's actions reviewed by higher authorities, and Facciola put the trial on hold for 10 days. In papers filed with the court, George says Choi was treated no differently than other similar protesters. One of Choi's attorneys, Robert Feldman, said he believed that the judge's comments Wednesday mean his client has "effectively won the case" and that the charges against him will ultimately be dismissed.
According to one report, the decision to arrest Choi was made before the protest even began. He's gonna win this thing.

Scott Lively: Gays Will Use Prop 8 Tapes To Intimidate Christian Witnesses

Scott Lively, the infamous gay death penalty advocate and spokesman for God's Gentle Love, says homo-terrorists will wreak revenge upon Christian witnesses should the Prop 8 trial tapes be released.
"We have seen all across the country that the gay activist movement attempts to intimidate anyone who stands up for family values, and this just seems to be another example," decides Dr. Scott Lively of DefendtheFamily.com. "There's really no good reason for this [video footage] to be released, and I would hope that the decision would go against the release." Judge Ware has not made a ruling on the issue, but he is expected to provide a written decision at a later date. So far, he has said that "the integrity of the judicial process is affected" when one judge promises a videotape will be used only for limited purposes and a second judge decides to make the video public. "We have seen, unfortunately, a lot of intimidation of the judiciary by gay activists as well, so it will be interesting to see whether this judge stands up to the pressure or stands true to his original decision," Dr. Lively concludes.
Lively's ministry is one of the few listed as a certified hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

AIDS Group To File Complaint Against Barebacking Porn Company

The controversial AIDS Healthcare Foundation says it will file a complaint against a Florida-based porn company after one of its actors became HIV-positive. According to a little-noticed item in Florida's public health code, not using a condom during a porn shoot qualifies as a "sanitary nuisance." So says the AHF, at least.
"This is yet another suspected case of HIV infection in the adult film industry. Given the wide reports, and given that Brazzers affirmatively states they do not use condoms--a violation of both state and federal health statutes--it makes sense to investigate them in the hopes of putting an end to further infections," said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. "We are filing these complaints with Florida health officials and federal OSHA officials to prompt industry compliance with employee health and safety regulations and to spur proper and thorough public health investigations of this reported incident."
The AHF's action has thrilled the American Family Association's Bryan Fischer, who adores linking HIV-positive people to terms like "sanitary nuisance."

The Rise Of American Nazism (Con't)

Florida's Pastor Mike Stahl wants to create a "national registry of known atheists." That way, good Christians can scan the list for neighbors, boycott their Satanic businesses, and otherwise harass them. Hmm, where have we heard this idea before?
Now , many (especially the atheists ) , may ask “Why do this , what’s the purpose ?” Duhhh , Mr. Atheist , for the same purpose many States put the names and photos of convicted sex offenders and other ex-felons on the I-Net – to INFORM the public ! I mean , in the City of Miramar , Florida , where I live , the population is approx. 109,000 . My family and I would sure like to know how many of those 109,000 are ADMITTED atheists ! Perhaps we may actually know some . In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism . Or perhaps they are radical atheists , whose hearts are as hard as Pharaoh’s , in that case , if they are business owners , we would encourage all our Christian friends , as well as the various churches and their congregations NOT to patronize them as we would only be “feeding” Satan .
Blogger PZ Myers notes that a campaign urging atheists to be more public about their identity already exists. Myers concludes:
I’m out. Pastor Mike can get to work compiling his own damn list, and he can put me right at the top of it. Would he also like me to get a tattoo, or maybe wear an armband with a big red A on it? We’re not ashamed, but many of us are rightly afraid of the cretinous thugs who follow Pastor Mike’s Jesus.

NEW YORK: Senator Ruben Diaz To Receive First Annual Ruben Diaz Courage Award

Anti-gay Pastor Jim Garlow has created the Ruben Diaz Courage Award. And the first annual recipient of the award is, ta-DAH, Senator Reverend Ruben Douchebag himself!
Ruben serves as pastor of, the Christian Community Neighborhood Church in New York City, in the Bronx. But there is more. He is a New York State Senator. But there is even more. Prior to being a Senator, he served on the New York City Council, winning the election 79% to 22%, the only ordained minister serving on the council. But there is yet even more. In liberal New York City, he is 100% pro-life, one of very few – if not the only – Democrat State Senator to hold to the biblical position. And – as you would expect – yes, there is even more. Pastor Diaz has fought hard for traditional, natural marriage, the only Democrat to stand for one man-one woman marriage in bitterly fought legislative battles year after year. But Pastor Diaz stood – like a rock. And he has paid dearly.
And by "paid dearly," Garlow means that people on the internet have said some just awful things about Diaz.

Quote Of The Day - Gary DeMar

Evangelist Gary DeMar explains how the gay death penalty will work once Christians achieve dominion over the United States and install a theocratic government:
"Obviously, certain sins often may escape detection. Homosexuals who practice behind closed doors are out-of-bounds for the courts, of course, unless others witness their criminal behavior. Such behavior may not be dealt with by courts in history, but will be dealt with by God, either in history (e.g., AIDS) or eternity. The law that requires the death penalty for homosexual acts effectually drives the perversion of homosexuality underground, back to the closet, to the dark realm of shameful activity."
RELATED: Check out Warren Throckmorton's just-posted list of quotes from other dominionists on the subject of the gay death penalty. He concludes: "No wonder many social conservatives are out in force trying to deny that these movements have any consequence or have any influence on Rick Perry or Michele Bachmann."

Feds Block Merger Of Cell Phone Giants

The Department of Justice today filed suit to block the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile, saying that if the companies were to join, millions of consumers would suffer with higher prices and fewer choices.
"AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile would eliminate a company that has been a disruptive force through low pricing and innovation by competing aggressively in the mobile wireless telecommunications services marketplace. AT&T could obtain substantially the same network enhancements that it claims will come from the transaction if it simply invested in its own network without eliminating a close competitor."
Bam! The merger isn't officially dead until a federal judge rules. Which, of course, could take forever. But as the above-linked story notes, in the meantime thousands of workers at both companies will hang on to their jobs.

Quote Of The Day - Erwin Chemerinsky

"I continue to believe that the [Supreme] Court will rule, five-to-four, in an opinion authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy, that laws prohibiting marriage equality violate the United States Constitution. Kennedy wrote the Court’s opinions in Romer v. Evans (1996) and Lawrence v. Texas (2003), and I think that he will see his longest-lasting legacy from over a quarter of a century on the Court being in the area of eliminating discrimination against gays and lesbians. I believe that his opinion will emphasize, as he did in Romer and Lawrence, the absence of any legitimate interest for prohibiting marriage by same-sex couples. As in Lawrence, and other opinions, he will point to the trend across the world." - Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of UC Irvine's law school.

Possibly Good News On Prop 8

Via Zack Ford at Think Progress:
Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the Ninth Circuit Court may have been derailed by Senate Republicans, but his nomination to California’s Supreme Court is right on track. The Commission on Judicial Appointments will consider Liu’s appointment Wednesday, but the State Bar’s Commission on Judicial Nominations has already given him its highest rating: “exceptionally well-qualified.” It’s expected that, if confirmed, Liu — who has previously spoken out for marriage equality — will be seated in time for next week’s hearing on proponents’ standing in the Prop 8 case.

An Update On Jerry Buell

Eagle-eyed JMG readers have picked up that Orlando's WFTV-ABC has edited their original story about public school teacher Jerry Buell. The station's earlier claim that the KKK had threatened to picket the Lake County School Board has vanished. As WFTV was the source for several JMG posts on that issue and since no other news outlet appears to be making that assertion, we're going to have to now recant such a claim here. I'll publish updates to that effect in my previous posts. It would be interesting to learn why that bit has disappeared from the WFTV story without explanation.

Peter Sprigg: Help! I'm Being Oppressed!

Sprigg is incensed about being characterized as part of a hate group. This is the guy who wants you imprisoned for being gay. This is the guy who announced on national television that it would be a fantastic if the United States would just "export" all its dirty queers to some other country.

Willie Nelson - Back To The Start

Yes, this is the Coldplay song. Clip description:
The film, by film-maker Johnny Kelly, depicts the life of a farmer as he slowly turns his family farm into an industrial animal factory before seeing the errors of his ways and opting for a more sustainable future. Both the film and the soundtrack were commissioned by Chipotle to emphasize the importance of developing a sustainable food system.

The Return Of Ratty Hairpiece Woman

Focus On The Family's Ratty Hairpiece Woman (Candi Cushman) goes on and on about the "indoctrination" of students by groups such as GLSEN. Let those kids grow up to be the violent Christian bullies that God meant them to be!

Matt Barber: Help! I'm Being Oppressed!

"I’ve said this before and I’ll say it right now. The sexual anarchist lobby, this radical, militant lobby, wants three things in this order: they want to see those of us who hold traditional values and have a biblical view of sexual behavior and sexual morality; they want to see us behind bars. Absent that, if that doesn’t work, they want to see us discredited, our licenses, my law licenses revoked, unable to teach in schools and so forth. They want us completely discredited and marginalized to the fringes of society. Finally and included in that is the inability, they want to see people like us not able to make a living. And that’s why they’re going after these organizations and they’re using economic terrorism, for lack of a better phrase." - Liberty Counsel spokesbigot Matt Barber.

Again, and just so we're all clear...gay boycotts are "economic terrorism." Stop that terrorizing, you dirty homo terrorist! Stop it right now!

The Gay Groupon Launches

Poor Groupon. Aside from being one of the most over-hyped and destined to flameout internet companies since Kozmo, they face hordes of competitors who have not only jumped on their concept, but use similar names as well. Via Techcrunch, here's the backstory on Gaypon:
Before becoming a Gaypon merchant, businesses are put through a background check of sorts, where they are investigated for any bad marks, like complaints of discrimination from customers and employees, poor hiring practices, etc. Gaypon says it also uses various tools, like the Human Rights Campaign’s “Corporate Equality Index” that rates American workplaces on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. Gaypon plans to donate a portion of proceeds to charitable organizations, and those that support the gay community, like The Trevor Project, which focuses on crisis and suicide prevention amongst LGBTQ youth, and Affirmations, which is one of the largest LGBT community centers in the United States. The exact percentage of those donations, however, is unclear.
Just a few days ago, a good friend idly wondered why there was no gay version of Groupon. I pointed to the very short-lived Fab.com (nee Fabulis) as the reason. I don't have a lot of faith in Gaypon either, but I wish them well.

FLORIDA: Students Of "Cesspool" Teacher Share His Homophobic Comments

After being suspended for posting anti-gay comments on his Facebook page, last week Florida teacher Jerry Buell was reinstated when the KKK threatened to picket the local school board in his defense. The defiant Buell said that he did not intend to change his teaching philosophy, which includes speaking "as if Lake County had hired Jesus Christ himself." Today Equality Florida shares some examples of Buell's in-class comments as reported by former students.
Brian Blaise, an honors student who graduated in 2003, described the day Mr. Buell offered his disturbing take on the issue of gays serving in the military: "I looked up when he said he supported gays in the military, stunned by the answer. He immediately followed that comment with the statement that we should then put them on the front lines, and pull back," Blaise said. Another of his students recounted Mr. Buell invoking the quote "A pig in a tuxedo is still a pig" to declare his disdain for recognizing gay relationships.
Got that? "Jesus Christ himself" is telling public school students that setting up gay soldiers to be murdered would be a hilarious thing to do. Christian Love.

TAKE ACTION: Send an email to the Lake County School Board and demand that they expand anti-bullying and non-discrimination policies to include LGBT students.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The source for the KKK aspect of this story, Orlando's WFTV-ABC, has edited their original story to remove this claim. No explanation has yet been provided for this change.

The Bad Hair Grad Photo Meme

Yesterday Dan Savage posted the above left photo from 1982, saying, "Who am I to criticize anybody's style?" At least Dan's hair appears to be low maintenance. Accomplishing my 1977 feathered swoop required at least thirty minutes with a blow dryer and a round brush. Not to mention enough Aqua Net to eat a sizable ozone hole over Central Florida.

Gay Military Mag To Debut On Bases

The publishers of Outserve Magazine have received permission to distribute the gay-oriented title on Army and Air Force bases beginning next month.
OutServe Magazine will hit store shelves at Army and Air Force bases on Sept. 20, the day the Pentagon plans to formally end enforcement of the “don’t ask, don't tell” policy that bans gays from serving openly. The publication is published by OutServe, a group of secretly gay active duty service members that says it has hundreds of members currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The magazine, which began publishing in the spring, is currently available in limited supply at some public meeting areas and military physicians offices, the group said.

IRENE: A Top Ten Worst Storm

Analysts say Hurricane Irene will enter the books as one of the ten most costly storms to ever strike the United States. Dozens of people have died and flood waters continue to rise in some portions of New England. Repairs to damaged roads, bridges, and train tracks will likely take many months to complete and the governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have demanded immediate financial assistance from the federal government.
Industry estimates put the cost of the storm at $7 billion to $10 billion, largely because the hurricane pummeled an unusually wide area of the East Coast. Beyond deadly flooding that caused havoc in upstate New York and Vermont, the hurricane flooded cotton and tobacco crops in North Carolina, temporarily halted shellfish harvesting in Chesapeake Bay, sapped power and kept commuters from their jobs in the New York metropolitan area and pushed tourists off Atlantic beaches in the peak of summer. While insurers have typically covered about half of the total losses in past storms, they might end up covering less than 40 percent of the costs associated with Hurricane Irene, according to an analysis by the Kinetic Analysis Corporation. That is partly because so much damage was caused by flooding, and it is unclear how many damaged homes have flood insurance, and partly because deductibles have risen steeply in coastal areas in recent years, requiring some homeowners to cover $4,000 worth of damages or more before insurers pick up the loss.
Buzzfeed has posted many photos of the damage in Vermont.

More On The Charlotte Hate March

As I mentioned yesterday, hundreds of red-shirted anti-gay Christians marched on Charlotte Pride this weekend in order to hurl insults and condemnation at the event's attendees. According to Matt Comer of North Carolina's Q-Notes, the group's leader, Michael Brown, "started his FIRE School of Ministry to 'raise up a holy army of uncompromising spirit-filled radicals who will shake an entire generation with the gospel of Jesus by life or death.' Chilling. More photos from the day can be found on Brown's Facebook page.
