Herman Cain Wins Florida Straw Poll

It's a landslide of Cain crazy!
Business entrepreneur Herman Cain shocked the political world by winning the Florida GOP's influential presidential straw poll Saturday, while Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann finished dead last in the field of eight candidates. Cain, the former Godfather's Pizza CEO who appears to have caught fire in recent weeks, topped the GOP field with 37.1 percent of the 2,657 votes cast. Bachmann, in a stunning reversal of her Iowa straw poll victory in Ames last month, received only 40 ballots, or 1.51 percent of the vote. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the current leader in most polls, finished second with 15.4 percent of the delegates' votes in Florida, edging out former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who won 14 percent.
The last four Florida straw poll winners went on to win the GOP nomination. That's a streak that will be broken, obvs.

Anti-Marriage MD State Rep Charged With Stealing To Fund Own Wedding

Maryland state Delegate Tiffany Alston, who helped derail same-sex marriage, has been charged with embezzling money to pay for her own wedding.
Alston, 34, a little-known freshman state lawmaker before this spring, is charged with writing herself checks and cashing them to pay for at least $3,560 in expenses for her wedding day. According to the Office of the Maryland State Prosecutor, she also wrote herself checks to help pay the salary of an employee in her law firm. Alston’s wedding, attended by some fellow lawmakers and sorority sisters, was derided this spring by some gay activists. With whispers and shrugs outside Annapolis hearing rooms, some said it was ironic that so close to the celebration of her own nuptials a lawmaker reversed course and opposed letting gays marry in Maryland.
Alston, who is a Democrat, initially co-sponsored the marriage equality bill before voting against it "for my constituents." She also fled the legislative chamber in order to prevent the bill from advancing out of committee.

RELATED: Alston is one of the black legislators championed by NOM as evidence how the African-American community opposes LGBT rights.

Homofascists Will Destroy America

"We need to stand firmly and unapologetically on the hard truth that homosexuality is not a benign, morally neutral social phenomenon. It is an insidious and contagious form of sexual perversion condemned by God as an abomination. I cringe even writing these words because I know the wrath I am inviting on myself. Still, someone needs to say this boldly and publicly because it is the truth, and only the truth can set us free of the political correctness that has imprisoned us until now. The homosexual agenda represents an existential threat to Christian civilization and we're in the final phase of the war, losing badly. It all hinges upon you, Christian reader. Either get into the game in earnest, immediately, or wave goodbye." - Pink Swastika author Scott Lively, writing for World Net Daily, the world's most widely-read Christianist "news" site.

RELATED: Lively is widely considered one of the American evangelicals who have fueled the murderous anti-gay sentiment sweeping Africa. It was after a Lively visit with local authorities that Uganda began pressing for its still-pending bill calling for the execution of homosexuals.

ALSO RELATED: Next month Lively will be "honored" for his "battle against homofascism" at an Illinois banquet sponsored by Peter LaBarbera.

NFL Protects Sexual Orientation

With little apparent fanfare, the National Football League has added sexual orientation to the list of protected classes in its collective bargaining agreement. Via the gay sports blog Wide Rights, here's the new language.
Section 1. No Discrimination: There will be no discrimination in any form against any player by the Management Council, any Club or by the NFLPA because of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or activity or lack of activity on behalf of the NFLPA.
In the above-linked article, Wide Rights speculates as to the source of this change, which may have come from gay-friendly New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

Gary Johnson Condemns Booing

Former New Mexico governor and 2012 presidential candidate Gary Johnson has joined former Sen. Rick Santorum in condemning the audience members who booed an openly gay soldier at this week's GOP debate.
"If I have one regret from last evening, it’s that I didn’t stand up and say, you know, you’re booing a U.S. serviceman who is denied being able to express his sexual preference," he said. "There’s something very, very wrong with that." Johnson said he was "chomping at the bit" to respond to the audience, but he was reticent to speak out due to his exclusion from the recent debates. "I’m feeling a little bit like I’m walking on egg shells," he said. He told Sharpton he believes the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, which went into effect on Sept. 20, should have been done "a long time ago."
Johnson is by far the most gay-friendly of the entire GOP presidential field. Therefore, of course, he is at the bottom of the pack.

Quote Of The Day - John Shore

"If you’re a Christian who believes that being gay is a morally reprehensible offense against God, then you share a mindset, worldview, and moral structure with the kids who hounded Jamey Rodemeyer, literally, to death. It is your ethos, your convictions, and your theology that informed, supported, and encouraged their cruelty. We Christians who believe that God created gay people as much in His own image as he did straight people are begging you to reconsider your theology — to do nothing more than be open to an alternative, fully credible, scholastically sound interpretation of one or two lines from Paul. How can you be unwilling to do something so simple, when you see the horrible ultimate cost of that refusal?" - Christian author John Shore.

Frothy Mix: I Never Heard Any Boos

"I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier. That soldier is serving our country, I thank him for his service to our country. I’m sure he’s doing an excellent job. I hope he is safe, and I hope he returns safely, and does his mission well. I have to admit, I seriously did not hear those boos. Had I heard them, I certainly would have commented on them. But as you know, when you’re in that sort of environment, you’re focused on the question and formulating your answer. And I just didn’t hear those couple of boos that were out there. But certainly, had I, I would have said that that was — I would have said, don’t do that, this man is serving our country, and we are to thank him for his service." - Rick Santorum, speaking on Fox News.

Maggie Gallagher Spearheads Launch Of NOM's New Anti-Gay Hate Group

NOM has unleashed yet another foul creature intent on thwarting civil rights, the Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance, which will operate under the hooves of Maggie Gallagher, who only yesterday stepped down as NOM's chaircow. From their about page:
The goal of the Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance is to create a supportive community for those who have been threatened for standing for marriage, to nip the climate of fear being created in the bud, to expose for fair-minded Americans on both sides of the debate the threats being made, to conduct high-quality qualitative and quantitative research documenting the extent of the harm, to develop legislative and community proposal to protect Americans right to engage in the core civil rights: to organize, to vote, to speak, to donate, and to write for marriage. Isolated and alone, we can be suppressed and intimidated. Together we are too many to be treated as second-class citizens.
The group's first spokebigot is Frank Turek, the corporate trainer who claims to have lost regular gigs because he's published several viciously anti-gay books. Good As You has the real story: "What NOM won't tell you? That this Frank Turek goes WAY beyond simply opposing marriage equality for same-sex couples, and instead promotes the idea that gay people are embracing harmful, 'illegitimate' and 'changeable' behavior -- behavior on par with that of sociopaths, alcoholics, or even gay-bashers."

PhoboQuotable - Father Alex Webster

"On Sept. 20, 2011, a date that will live in infamy, the U.S. armed forces were deliberately and successfully attacked by advocates of the scourge of homosexuality. The elimination of the last vestige of moral restraint on sexual perversion in the U.S. military, commonly known as the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, ushers in a new Orwellian era in which the military leadership of our nation will proclaim the unnatural as natural, the unhealthy as healthy and the immoral as moral. As an Orthodox priest who still loves all of the troops I served as a chaplain for a quarter of a century, I pray that God the Holy Trinity will preserve and protect the U.S. armed forces — especially in this new Dark Age." - Father Alexander Webster, writing for Stars & Stripes.

TRAILER: Limelight

It may be a boring-ass mini-mall today, but once upon a time the Limelight was the nightclub. I didn't live in NYC during its heyday, but I always made at least one visit any time I was in town. It's the only nightclub I've ever been thrown out of! True story. I also own the starburst light fixture that used to hang over the DJ booth.
As the owner of legendary hotspots like Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium and Club USA, Peter Gatien was the king of the New York club scene until years of legal battles led to his eventual deportation to Canada. This exuberant documentary charts Gatien's rise and fall against the transformation of New York City, offering a wild ride through a now-closed chapter in the history of NYC nightlife. From the director of "Cocaine Cowboys."
Limelight opens today in NYC.

"Fireworks" On Bristol's Reality Show

Clip description:
Bristol Palin, Sarah Palin daughter, was enjoying her time at West Hollywood's Saddle Ranch restaurant with her friends and the film crew of her new reality show. Bristol got on the mechanical bull and rode it. But, as Bristol fell off the mechanical bull a man from the bar started shouting things to Bristol such as "Your mother is a whore," "Did you ride Levi like that," and "Your mother is a f***ing devil." Well Bristol was not happy and having any of that especially in front of her film crew and the paparazzi. Bristol quickly walked over and confronted the man and both began shouting and arguing. The Saddle Ranch management tried breaking it up but Bristol and the man kept going at it till the film crew took Bristol away!
Hmm. Kinda convenient, huh?

BUFFALO: Cops Consider Criminal Charges In Bullying-Related Suicide Of Gay Teen

Buffalo-area police are considering filing criminal charges against the students who allegedly bullied 14 year-old gay teen Jamey Rodemeyer into killing himself.
No bullying laws exist in New York State, according to Camilleri, so police would have to determine whether aggravated harassment charges fit this case. Whether suspects would be tried in juvenile court would depend on whether the alleged bully was 16 or older, he said. Police said they had spoken with Williamsville School Superintendent Scott G. Martzloff, who has pledged the district's cooperation. "We've heard that there were some specific students, an identifiable group of students, that had specifically targeted Jamey, or had been picking on him for a period of time," Police Chief John C. Askey told the Buffalo News.

Meg Whitman Tapped To Run HP

Failed politician and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman has been hired to run the foundering HP, who last month pulled the plug on their brand new line of tablets.
Whitman replaces current CEO Leo Apotheker after a short-lived,11-month stint, as the Silicon Valley giant continued its steep decline in both profit and investor confidence. HP not only suffers from poor leadership, but also lack of leadership – Whitman will be the third CEO to take charge of this iconic corporation in crisis. Whitman is no stranger to taking massive and unexpected career leaps, most often amidst intense skepticism. She’s a power woman leading with what she calls “a bias for action” throughout her career. While rising up the traditional management track in blue chip companies such as Hasbro and Disney, Whitman uprooted her family across the country to take the helm of EBay.
Last year Whitman spent $144 million of her own money to lose to California Gov. Jerry Brown. HP seems like the perfect home for somebody with that record.

Ahmadinajad: Homosexuality Is Ugly

"My position hasn't changed. In Iran, homosexuality is looked down upon as an ugly deed. Perhaps there are those who engage in such activities and you may be in contact with them and more aware of them. But in Iranian society such activities, thoughts, and behaviors are shameful. Therefore, these are not known elements within Iranian society. Rest assured, this is one of the ugliest behaviors in our society. It is against divine will, divine teachings of any and every faith, and it is certainly at the detriment of humans and humanity. But as the government, I cannot go in the street and stop my population and ask them about specific orientation, so my position is clear about that." - Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, again claiming that gays don't really exist in his country, despite executions for homosexuality.

NYC Consider Ads On Projects

New York is considering selling ad space on the sides on the city's thousands of public housing projects. Mayor Bloomberg supports the plan, with some caveats.
The cash-strapped agency's proposal to hire a consultant to advise it on how to make money by selling ad space has come under fire from residents and lawmakers, who are demanding City Council hearings. The Housing Authority has not said that certain products - like booze, fast food or the lottery - would be prohibited from advertising in its developments, which house more than 400,000 low-income residents. Bloomberg said guidelines would be required for the types of companies that could promote their products on building lobbies, facades and courtyards. "Of course, you'll always have restrictions," Bloomberg said. "You're not going to have an ad for a pornographic website, for example ... and I think we probably shouldn't have ads for things that are not healthy for our kids."

First GOP Rep Joins DOMA Repeal Fight

The battle to repeal DOMA finally has its first Republican co-sponsor. Via Freedom To Marry:
Today, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced that she would be the first Republican member of Congress to cosponsor the Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 1116), sponsored by Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. "Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's support for this important bill confirms that equal respect for all marriages is a bipartisan, mainstream value,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and President of Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide. “Working with Representatives Ros-Lehtinen and Nadler, and the Respect for Marriage Act's 124 co-sponsors, Freedom to Marry will continue to make the case to Republican and Democratic members of Congress that it's time to return the federal government to its proper role of honoring all marriages legal in the states -- without a gay exception."
According to above-excerpted press release, Ros-Lehtinen's support was gained with the help of the Log Cabin Republicans. She is the most senior Republican woman in the U.S. House and was first elected to represent Miami in 1989. (Her district includes South Beach and Key West.) She is also the only GOP member of the congressional LGBT caucus.

TOMORROW: Castro Nude-In

In a pre-Folsom Street Fair event that is sure to draw the scorn of America's wingnuts, a group of male nudists plans to hold a "nude-in" at the corner of Castro and Market streets tomorrow.
George Davis, a 65-year-old nudist best known for his unsuccessful run against Gavin Newsom in the 2007 mayor’s race, said the nude-in is just about letting people know it’s legal to go naked in San Francisco. (He’s right; it’s only illegal if one is aroused.) “You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t know it’s OK to be nude, it’s not illegal,” he said. “It’s just conveying a message that nude is not lewd, that you have a right to be nude. That’s about it.”
I've never been one of the "naked people," even at nude beaches. So I really don't get this need to be naked on a city street. Shrug.

A Stroke Made Him Gay

According to a story in Britain's Mirror tabloid, a previously straight "football-loving" skinhead turned into a flaming hairdresser after suffering a stroke.
“Everyone said I was more sarcastic, behaved differently and that even my mannerisms had changed, but to me the way I felt was natural. So I started avoiding seeing my old friends who wanted me to be someone I wasn’t,” he recalls. But the changes weren’t only in Chris’s personality. Other things about him had started to change, too, things he couldn’t put down to recovering from the accident. “I was watching TV one day when a really handsome guy came on. I felt my stomach flutter and the same feelings I used to have for pretty girls came across me. I had never felt like that about a man before but I knew immediately what the feeling was. I fancied him,” Chris says.
At least his parents seem to be buying this story.

REPORT: Maggie Gone From NOM

The Associated Press is tweeting that NOM has replaced its co-founder Maggie Gallagher with Chapman University professor John Eastman. You may recall Eastman's laughable and failed dirty trick of attempting to have the repeal of Prop 8 overturned while Gov. Schwarzenegger was out the country. His bio:
Dr. John C. Eastman is the Henry Salvatori Professor of Law & Community Service at Chapman University School of Law, and also served as the School’s Dean from June 2007 to January 2010, when he stepped down to pursue a bid for California Attorney General. He is the Founding Director of the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, a public interest law firm affiliated with the Claremont Institute, and the current Chairman of the Constitutional Jurisprudence Clinic. Prior to joining the Chapman Law faculty in August 1999, he served as a law clerk with Justice Clarence Thomas at the Supreme Court of the United States and with Judge J. Michael Luttig at the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
In April 2010 Gallagher handed over NOM's presidency to Brian Brown and became the chaircow of their board of directors. Since then she's rarely been sighted at NOM's events and has mostly been heard from via anti-gay editorials published on wingnut websites.

CORRECTION: Contrary to my headline, Gallagher has not left NOM entirely but has merely stepped down as chairman. She says: "I will remain on the NOM board, and continue to work on specific projects for NOM, as well as taking on some additional outside projects I've long deferred, such as finishing my book Debating Same-Sex Marriage which I've been working on for Oxford University Press with Prof. John Corvin."

Theocratic Christianist Group: We Totally Don't Want An American Theocracy

Jay Sekulow, of Pat Robertson's American Center for Law & Justice, says that the lamestream media is trying to con the public into believing that Christianists want to install a theocratic government. His argument isn't very convincing.
The new insinuation is that conservative Christians are engaged in a concerted effort to establish a theocracy here in America. Under the guise of so-called ‘Christian Dominionism,’ our alleged goal is, “replacing American law with the strictures of the Old Testament.” Nothing could be further from the truth. As I have explained before, Christians who seek to participate in the political process do so not as an attempt to install some type of theocratic rule, but to ensure that the government fulfils its God-ordained role in society to promote justice, provide security, and protect the God-given freedoms of its people. Evangelical conservatives are fighting for freedom and basic human rights around the world. Our main adversaries are often theocratic governments.
Shorter Sekulow: "We don't want a theocracy, we just want everything 100% run the God-ordained way. There's a DIFFERENCE!"

RELATED: Sekulow's employer, the ACLJ, routinely sues public school districts to force them to allow Christian prayer ceremonies and similar events. They also convinced the Supreme Court that it was constitutional for evangelists to harass passengers in airport terminals.

ALSO RELATED: Over the last decade tax-exempt Christian charities have paid the Sekulow family an estimated $33 million for their legal advocacy.

Anti-Gay Group Claims AllOut Lied About Severed Relationship With PayPal

The Fort Lauderdale-based anti-gay group Truth In Action Ministries says that "homosexual activists" are lying about forcing PayPal to drop them. Because they never worked with PayPal in the first place.
The group claimed this week that the accounts for four of those organizations have been disabled -- one of those being Truth in Action Ministries (formerly Coral Ridge Ministries). John Aman, a spokesman for the ministry, disputes that claim. "The plain fact of the matter is that we've never had a business relationship with PayPal -- they're not our pal," he tells OneNewsNow. "And I don't think there will be [a relationship] in the future, given what they've said and how they've taken sides with the group that's trying to force business away from PayPal."
Well, golly gee, Mr. Aman, looky what I just found on the website selling your propaganda.

NYC Catholic Archbishop Sends Letter To Obama Demanding Support For DOMA

"Mr. President, I respectfully urge you to push the reset button on your Administration’s approach to DOMA. Our federal government should not be presuming ill intent or moral blindness on the part of the overwhelming majority of its citizens, millions of whom have gone to the polls to directly support DOMAs in their states and have thereby endorsed marriage as the union of man and woman. Nor should a policy disagreement over the meaning of marriage be treated by federal officials as a federal offense—but this will happen if the Justice Department’s latest constitutional theory prevails in court. The Administration’s failure to change course on this matter will, as the attached analysis indicates, precipitate a national conflict between Church and State of enormous proportions and to the detriment of both institutions." - New York Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan, from a lengthy letter to Obama.

Ryan Idol Convicted Of Attempted Murder

Former gay porn star Ryan Idol (real name Marc Donais) has been found guilty of attempting to murder his girlfriend.
Donais, 45, was accused of using a toilet tank lid to batter his ex-girlfriend in the head in an attack at the woman's home on Sept. 5, 2009. The adult film star, who identifies as bisexual although he performed in gay porn, and the woman had broken up before the incident. During the trial, Donais testified that he thought his ex-girlfriend had a knife when they were in the bathroom, where she was taking a bath. He said he hit the woman in self-defense. Jurors, however, didn't buy his argument.
After retiring from porn, Idol tried his hand at acting and appeared in the Broadway revival of The Ritz. (I saw him in that.) In 2008 he got caught up in a financial scandal involving a Birmingham, Alabama city council member, who was accused of embezzling money from a children's charity to pay Idol $30,000 for "computer repairs."

"And that's the middle class," Romney continued. "It's not those in the low end; it's certainly not those in the very high end. It's for the great middle class - the 80 to 90 percent of us in this country." A look at Romney's personal financial disclosure form, however, reveals he's in the bracket that President Obama is targeting with his proposed "Buffett rule" to tax millionaires. An analysis of Romney's 28-page accounting of his wealth by the Boston Globe earlier this year put the former Massachusetts governor's net worth at between $190 million and $250 million.
He's also "unemployed"! Get that man a six-pack.

ENGLAND: Meatless Fridays Are Back

Catholic authorities in England and Wales have ruled that their flocks must once again abstain from eating meat on Fridays as penance for the death of Jesus. The edict went into effect last week.
The decision to reinstate the custom was announced by the bishops of England and Wales in May. September 16 was chosen as the reintroduction date because it marks the first anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI’s arrival in the United Kingdom. The practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays was traditionally a way of remembering that Jesus Christ died on that day of the week. However, the Church in England and Wales abandoned the centuries-old custom back in 1984.
"An absence of flesh on the dining table leads us to recall the Lord’s gift of his own flesh on the Cross." How....vivid.

PayPal Boots Four Hate Sites

PayPal has severed its relationships with four notorious hate groups after a petition campaign from All Out called on the money transfer giant to abide by its own mission statement against abetting violence and hatred. Via press release:
The PayPal option has been disabled on the websites of Truth in Action Ministries, Brazilian extremist Julio Severo’s sites, Noua Dreapta, and Dove World Outreach Center—organizations whose regular anti-LGBT hate speech puts them starkly at odds with PayPal’s own ethics policy, which states that account holders “may not use the PayPal service for activities that [...] promote hate, violence, racial intolerance”. AllOut.org has called for ten organizations to be removed, and has attracted almost 40,000 signers from around the world to its petition asking for PayPal to take action. In response, the successful campaign has been dubbed “the latest example of homo-fascism,” by ‘Americans for Truth About Homosexuality,’ a notoriously virulent anti-LGBT group. PayPal said this week it “take[s] very seriously any cases where a user has incited hatred, violence or intolerance because of a person’s sexual orientation.”
Truth In Action is the former Coral Ridge Ministries, the Fort Lauderdale-based megachurch founded by dead dead dead homophobe D. James Kennedy. Dove World Outreach is the home of Florida's Pastor Terry Jones, the anti-gay asshat who burned Korans on national television, an act that arguably spawned murderous riots in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Huge props to All Out on this win. Porno Pete, you're NEXT.

HomoQuotable - Andrew Sullivan

"Has he been conscious since Roe vs Wade? The point here, it seems to me, is that Focus on the Family is no longer necessary. Its positions - once radical - are now litmus tests for every GOP candidate save one. It controls the party on social issues so completely the likeliest nominee began his campaign at a prayer rally. The winner of the Iowa straw poll is not just anti-gay, but actually has a business 'curing' them. Criminalizing all abortion is now not even up for debate within the GOP, and blind, faith-based support for Greater Israel in a global war against Islam is also de rigueur. Mead can dream on, but you don't need a religious right when the GOP has itself become synonymous with it." - Andrew Sullivan, countering Walter Mead's claim that Christianists have diminishing political clout.

FOTF Launches Drive To Donate Anti-Gay Books To Public School Libraries

In observance of this month's Banned Books Week, Focus On The Family is asking its members to donate anti-gay books to public school libraries.
Want a creative way for your family to act as the “salt and light” in your local community? Consider this idea for a family project: Donate books to your neighborhood and school libraries that communicate a faith-based and socially conservative viewpoint on hot-topic issues such as homosexuality and abortion. [Snip] The American Library Association (ALA) claims that Banned Books Week is about celebrating “the freedom to access information and express ideas” even if they “might be considered unorthodox or unpopular.” Challenge the ALA to honor its own principles by going to your local public library, or a school library, and donating books that communicate your family’s worldview. This is also a great way to be a part of giving people in your community access to a redemptive perspective.
According to FOTF's Ratty Hairpiece Woman, Banned Books Week is an non-crisis invented by the "extremist" American Library Association as some sort of anti-Christian plot. And then she goes on to give advice on how to object to books that "concerned parents" wouldn't want children to see.

Tony Perkins On DADT Repeal

"FRC will continue to monitor the consequences of this reversal of 236 years of American military policy, limit the damage and demand that the Defense Department do the same. Expect to see celebrations from homosexual groups and fawning stories in the media about how 'the sky has not fallen.' That's only because there will be no press releases from the new victims of sexual harassment or assault, the soldiers exposed to HIV tainted blood, the thousands of servicemembers who choose not to reenlist rather than forfeit their freedom of speech and religion, and the untold number of citizens who choose never to join the military. It's clear this President is more interested in appeasing sexual revolutionaries than in fighting America's enemies." - KKK supporter and Family Research Council head Tony Perkins, via email.
