Evening View - Limelight Mall

The is the view from the Sixth Avenue entrance of the former Limelight nightclub. The bones of the old space have mostly been obliterated, although one can still peg the former location of the DJ booth. The main floor consists of about a dozen retailers whose boundaries are defined by aisles instead of walls. When I stuck my head inside tonight, they were pumping out dance music at the same infamous Limelight volume. (So it seemed to my now much older ears.) Missing, however, were the dealers, the club kids, the drag queens, the go-go boys, the slumming celebs, etc etc.

Masturbation Is Totally Gay, Part Two

"An average male child has masturbated at one stage of his life or the other. If this behaviour were not controlled, it would lead to lack of interest in the opposite sex. This often happens in the subconscious mind, so that by the time one grows into it, one would not know why one hates the opposite sex. This is because when one masturbates, one may have practiced it with other male children. So, by the time they are qualified to have sexual relations, they just discover that they have something that satisfies them more than natural sex." - Professor of biblical history and "ex-gay" therapist Dr. Felix Jovi Ehwarieme, quoted in a Nigeria Guardian story about the campaign to pass Nigeria's proposed escalation in penalties for homosexuality. (Tipped by JMG reader Alan)

RELATED: Last month Seattle's Pastor Mark Driscoll said that male masturbation is inherently gay because it is sex with a man.

CORRECTION: In the first draft of this post I attributed the above quote to the wrong crazy person in the linked article. I was laughing too hard to notice!

Things Not To Ever Do Ever Ever

This.

Asshat Of The Day - Christie Blatchford

"I remain convinced that the best way to stop a bully is not to go mewling to the teacher, who will only call the victim’s mummy, or to your own mummy, who will only call the teacher. The best way is to take the bully out for a short pounding after school – and may I make it plain, please, that I don’t mean the victims should do this, but rather others. The onus for stopping bullies lies not with the people being bullied, but with those who see it happen.

"This has been true for centuries, and it is still true, and it works equally well in the locker room, the office, a bar, and on the factory floor or street. It is possible to be a gentle and kind man without speaking in a soft, sibilant voice that makes all sentences sound to my ear as though they were composed entirely of Ss. Glasses should be worn only by people who can’t see, not as props. Gay, as I’ve mentioned, is entirely fine. Fey is a pain in the arse." - Christine Blatchford, in a National Post column titled Toronto, City Of Sissies.

Blatchford's bile was triggered by witnessing a group of school boys greeting each other with hugs. And that's something boys should never do, apparently.

TODAY: SantaCon 2012

At this writing hundreds of hammered Santas are staggering through Manhattan in their annual pub crawl dubbed SantaCon. Bars, pubs, and nightclubs along the designated routes are making donations to Toys For Tots.

Organizers warn: "Don ye now your gay apparel! Anyone caught attending Santacon without a FULL costume will be pelted with reindeer droppings and receive coal in their stocking. Simply wearing a Santa hat is not acceptable." Also noted in the amusing set of rules: "Food will be collected at the start point by elves in leather thongs and delivered to the Food Bank for NYC."

Below is the full hearing from Thursday. The first clip covers the argument against releasing the trial tapes. The second clip covers the argument that Judge Vaughn Walker should have recused himself for being gay. Quote Of The Day - William Murray

"It is well-known in the Christian communities in Muslim nations that they will not even be considered for immigrant status to the United States, even if they already have relatives here. The Obama administration is importing hundreds of thousands of Muslim 'refugees' and using Nashville and Atlanta as hubs to resettle them as a means of busting the Bible Belt, which is a traditional foe of the Democrats.

"Muslim refugees and homosexuals now have special status to immigrate to the United States. This is an Obama legacy that must be ended. This nation needs immigrants that are well educated, hardworking and of child-bearing age, not those arriving with special needs under special circumstances to satisfy a political agenda." - William Murray, president of the Religious Freedom Coalition, writing for World Net Daily.

Trump May Cancel Debate

How shocking!
Business mogul Donald Trump said Friday he might scrub a presidential debate that so far has drawn only Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. Trump, the reality television star who has not ruled out an independent White House bid, had hoped for all of the Republican candidates to join in a debate he would moderate Dec. 27 in Iowa. Most have decided not to, leaving only Gingrich, a former House speaker, and Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator. "I have to look into it," Trump told Fox Business Network when asked whether he would host a two-candidate debate.
Trump says he's most mad at Bachmann for pulling out.

Pentagon: Calm Down Wingnuts, It'll Still Be Against The Rules To Fuck Horses

After a week of nonstop wingnut dumbassery, today the Pentagon was forced to issue a clarification on the potential repeal of the military's ban on sodomy.
Conservative groups are upset over a proposed change in the defense bill that would eliminate Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The code states that any person who engages in "unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy." Those found guilty of sodomy would be subject to court martial. The Pentagon said in a statement Friday that all animal abuse, including bestiality, would be considered "prejudicial to good order and discipline" and covered by another section of the military code. Court martial would still be in order.
We'll stand by for retractions from Family Research Council, PETA, Liberty Counsel, etc. Checks watch....

Duggars Go Santorum

The relentless human Pez dispenser named Michelle Duggar has miscarried what would have been her 20th child. The couple seems to have taken their cue from Rick Santorum over what comes next.
At a routine check-up Thursday to find out the sex of their 20th child, their doctor was unable to find a heartbeat and told the couple they had miscarried in the second trimester. "After the appointment, we came back home and told the children," says Michelle, 45. "We had just been talking about baby names last night and they were getting excited about naming a boy or a girl. It has been a real sad disappointment." She says the family will select a name after they know if the baby was a boy or girl, and then plan to have a funeral service.
I wonder if the funeral will be on their reality show.

Occupy The Syllabus

NYU is adding a course about Occupy Wall Street, which is fitting considering how much of the student body took part.
The course will explore the history and politics of debt and take a deeper look at the economic crisis the movement is protesting. It will be taught by SCA profesor Lisa Duggan. "Occupy Wall Street has done us all the service of illuminating [the fact] that the economy operates within the framework of political, social and cultural conflicts, and not outside them," she said. Duggan also hopes students will learn how the current crisis has developed and understand how it has affected the world.
There will also be a graduate-level course this spring.

Closest Earth-Like Planet Yet Found

NASA reports:
It's the closest match to Earth that has yet been found. Recently discovered planet Kepler 22b has therefore instantly become the best place to find life outside our Solar System. The planet's host star, Kepler 22, is actually slightly smaller and cooler than the Sun, and lies 600 light-years from Earth toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus). The planet, Kepler 22b, is over twice the radius of the Earth and orbits slightly closer in, but lies in the habitable zone where liquid water could exist on the surface. Pictured above is an artist’s depiction of how Kepler 22b might appear to an approaching spaceship, in comparison to the inner planets of our Solar System. Whether Kepler 22b actually contains water or life is currently unknown. A SETI project, however, will begin monitoring Kepler 22b for signs of intelligence.
Start packing.

Chuck Colson: We're Being Oppressed!

"We’ve fallen into the spiral of silence in which case the people who might be a tiny minority but are controlling the conversation intimidate the rest of us. Now where have we seen that happen most vividly? We’ve seen it in the gay rights movement. The gay rights movement is a tiny minority in America, so what you get is a passionate movement of 10 percent of the people, 5 percent of the people maybe in the gay movement, maybe 4 percent, 3 percent, and they control what the rest of us think because the rest of us are intimidated into silence. Folks, brothers and sisters, I tell you I believe in the depths of my being that the most important thing we can do today in obedience to Christ is to break the spiral of silence, to speak out, to point out unrighteousness." - Convicted felon Chuck Colson, speaking to Champion The Vote, the 2012 Christianist campaign to flood the polls with evangelicals. Quote Of The Day - Kate Kendell

"If you missed the hearing, count yourself lucky, for hardly ever in one courtroom have we been treated to the level of insult, bigotry, and stigmatizing trash that was presented by those defending Prop 8. [snip] It’s no wonder that the Prop 8 proponents are doing everything they can to distract attention from the real issues in the case and to hide the trial from public view. The proponents were given every opportunity to come forward at trial with any good reason to uphold Prop 8’s treatment of same-sex couples as second-class citizens. They came up empty, so they decided to change the subject.

"On Thursday, the Ninth Circuit appeared to see through at least part of their smokescreen. Regardless of how they rule on releasing the trial video, the judges seem ready to move ahead and decide whether Judge Walker’s decision should be upheld on its merits, not on the basis of unfounded personal attacks on the integrity of the judicial process. The arguments yesterday were hard to hear. The good news is they represent the swan song of our venal and feckless opposition. We are on the verge of sweeping change and after yesterday’s moronic display, that day cannot come soon enough." - Kate Kendell, executive director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, writing for the Advocate.

The Hypocrisy Train Keeps Chugging

"Tony Fabrizio is not the victim here. Tony Fabrizio has lined his pockets for years with money from gay groups and is now one of the chief architects of a campaign strategy not just an isolated television ad - intended to demonize gay people in order to score political points. Fabrizio claims he opposed the latest anti-gay Perry television ad. If Fabrizio really does oppose the ad and the broader strategy then the honorable and decent thing to do would be to resign from the campaign. Tony Fabrizio is no junior staffer he is one of the top campaign pollsters and strategists in the country.

"It is obvious that the campaign of Rick Perry is desperate, and in a desperate last ditch effort to become relevant in the GOP Presidential race he and his campaign have decided to employ a strategy that plays to the cheap seats and appeals to the worst in people. Rick Perry should be embarrassed and the people around him who are the architects of this strategy, particularly people like Tony Fabrizio, should be ashamed." - GOProud chairman Chris Barron, who adds that he had thought that Farbrizio was already out.

NOM To Endorse Gingrich?

Newt Gingrich would like to remind everybody that that marriage is between one man and one woman whom you abandon riddled with cancer on her hospital bed while you fuck the shit out of your mistress whom you later marry and cheat on with a third woman while screaming with Godly moral outrage about the infidelities of the president.

And NOM's Brian Brown, one of the nation's leading "defenders of marriage," an allegedly devout Catholic for whom divorce is forbidden, is raising money to make Gingrich president. Brian Brown: "Everybody is allowed to fuck anybody they want, married or not, as long as they tell Jeebus: 'My bad!' after every adulterous encounter. But not homos. Definitely not homos. They belong to Satan."

UK To EU: Good Luck With Euro Mess

British Prime Minister David Cameron has refused to sign on to the just-struck pact to save the Euro. All 17 nations that use the Euro have signed on.
Cameron said Britain refused to sacrifice sovereignty to save the euro, remaining outside an agreement by European nations to tighten budget rules. Cameron broke ranks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel after he failed to secure safeguards that would have stopped European Union plans to police financial services in London, Europe's trading hub.

In a clash that may reshape Europe's balance of power, the euro users opted to enshrine closer fiscal union in a new treaty that leaves out the U.K. instead of amending EU treaties that date back to the 1950s. Nine non-euro members -- Denmark, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania -- indicated they may follow suit after consulting with their national parliaments.
Twitter commentary on the issue ranges from "Well done, Cameron. You got your balls back!" to "Cameron protects City of London banking cronies! Again!" The New York Times calls the treaty a "significant defeat for Cameron."
Mr. Sarkozy said that “David Cameron requested something we all considered unacceptable, a protocol in the treaty allowing the U.K. to be exempted for a certain number of financial regulations.” Mr. Cameron said, “What was on offer wasn’t in British interests, so I didn’t agree to it.” He conceded that there were risks with others going ahead to form a separate treaty, but added, “We will insist that the E.U. institutions, the court and the Commission work for all 27 nations of the E.U.”

Lesbian Couple Sues Hawaii For Marriage

A lesbian couple has filed suit against Hawaii, claiming that next month's legalization of civil unions denies them their full rights. The suit names gay-friendly Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who signed the civil unions bill, as a defendant.
"Civil union doesn't do, it just doesn't do the same thing," said Janin Kleid, Plaintiff. The couple has not been in contact with any of the gay and lesbian organizations and is filing the lawsuit on their own. Their attorney John D'Amato argues the state law reserving marriage to only heterosexual couples is discriminatory and violates the 14th amendment. He says it would not require another constitutional amendment to change the law. "It would just require a judge to look at that law and say yeah plaintiffs you're right it does violate your rights to due process and equal protection under the federal constitution," said D'Amato. "The state's denying Janin and Natasha the right to marry deprives them of a fundamental right and is unjustly discriminatory."
It should be noted that the couple is acting without the advice or assistance of LGBT rights groups, who typically have carefully charted strategic timelines for such actions.

Log Cabin Slams GOProud: Shame On Them For Outing Perry's Strategist

"GOProud has disgraced itself in attacking Mr. Fabrizio. Log Cabin Republicans are against outing, especially for staffers, who have limited if any control over the politicians they work for. GOProud has used Twitter to out someone with whom they disagree. Log Cabin Republicans also disagreed with the Perry ad, but the national office had the backbone to issue an honest press release and list what they disagreed with.

"GOProud, by contrast, dribbled out a person’s private life through tweets. Worse, given that we don’t know the internal workings of the Perry campaign, we don’t know what connection, if any, Mr. Fabrizio had with the noxious ad. For GOProud to use a person’s sexual orientation against him in such murky circumstances tells us everything we need to know about how much honor they have: none. GOProud? GOShame!" - DC Log Cabin president Robert Turner.

You might recall that GOProud's Chris Barron endorsed Herman "Repeal DADT" Cain and promised to back Michele "Gays Are From Satan" Bachmann should she win the nomination. His return shot at Turner therefore rather defines the meaning of "hypocrisy."RELATED: We last heard from Turner when he backed GOProud's campaign against this blog.

LOS ANGELES: Elderly Marriage Activist Dies Waiting For Prop 8 To Be Overturned

Ed Watson, above left, has died at the age of 78. Watson made national news this year when he expressed his hope that he would be allowed to marry before Alzheimer's Disease robbed him of the ability to recognize Derence, his partner of 40 years.
Gay rights activists lamented Watson's death as a reminder of the harm inflicted on same-sex couples throughout the state because they are denied the right to marry. "It's ironic that he died on the eve of appeals about peripheral issues around a case that should have been settled more than a year ago," said Richard Jacobs, chairman and founder of the gay rights advocacy group Courage Campaign, as he was en route to San Francisco for a hearing before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. "None of this will matter to Ed or Derence."
Here's the clip the couple made in March.

Prop 8 Hearing Reactions

Lambda Legal
"The Court raked the lawyer for Prop 8's proponents over the coals for their argument that gay judges alone have special obligations to prove their impartiality that no other judge must bear. From the start, this motion was an offensive ploy by the proponents of Prop 8 to distract attention from the unconstitutionality of Prop 8 and the ongoing harm that that measure inflicts upon same-sex couples and their families. But the motion came at the expense of the integrity of the judicial system and the judges who have devoted their lives to public service and ensuring justice. We hope for a swift victory that will put this dangerous and desperate argument out of its misery."
National Center For Lesbian Rights
"It's no wonder that the Prop 8 proponents are doing everything they can to distract attention from the real issues in the Perry case and to hide the trial from public view. The proponents were given every opportunity to come forward at trial with any good reason to uphold Prop 8's treatment of same-sex couples as second-class citizens. Regardless of how they rule on releasing the trial video, the judges seem ready to move ahead and decide whether Judge Walker's decision should be upheld on its merits. They did not seem at all inclined to throw out Judge Walker's detailed and carefully reasoned opinion on the basis of unfounded personal attacks on the integrity of the judicial process."
It's late so more reactions will likely come in the morning. I'll add them then.

Live Prop 8 Audio Begins Shortly

The final (probably) Prop 8 hearing before the Ninth Circuit Court begins at 2:30pm PST. It appears that there will be no streaming video from the court house, but San Francisco's KQED will be providing live audio. I'm told the stream will be internet only, so if you regularly listen to KQED broadcasts online, you'll need a different link. Supporters from both sides are already gathered outside the court house. Follow along on Twitter at #Prop8.

UPDATE: Well, THAT was infuriating, enlightening, uplifting, and aggravating. Often within the same minute. And things weren't helped by the borked audio signal which blew out early under the strain of a national web audience. Twitter experts seem to believe our side lost the videotapes issue but won the more important recusal argument. Olson and Boies were as eloquent and brilliant as we've come to expect. Olson just posted the below tweet.

Malawi To Review Anti-Gay Laws

While Hillary Clinton's speech may have angered anti-factions in Nigeria, it appears that it may have the desired effect in Malawi.
Malawi will review a series of controversial laws, including a ban on homosexual acts, Justice Minister Ephraim Chiume has said. Mr Chiume said the review was in response to "public opinion". Western governments criticised Malawi last year for jailing a gay couple on sodomy charges. On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the US would use foreign aid to encourage countries to decriminalise homosexuality. UK Prime Minister David Cameron expressed a similar view in October, saying that gay rights were a human right.

This Is The Rick Perry Strategist GOProud's Jimmy LaSalvia Is Complaining About

His name is Tony Fabrizio. Politico reported on him in October.
Tony Fabrizio, a veteran strategist and pollster, is joining the Rick Perry campaign, sources tell me. Fabrizio was the chief strategist and pollster for Bob Dole's 1996 presidential run. His other recent clients have included Tim Pawlenty and Rick Scott. Fabrizio joins another Dole alum, Nelson Warfield, and media strategist Curt Anderson, whose hires by Team Perry went public last night. A national pollster had been a major missing piece for Perry, who is trying to adjust his message and fix his campaign's woes for the coming truncated primary fight.
The Miami Herald reports that in addition to working for FL Gov. Rick Scott, Fabrizio has worked for gay rights groups.
Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, who has worked for gay-rights advocates in the past, has become the target of criticism among gay activists who opposed the Texas governor's latest Iowa ad that takes a swipe at the end of the Don't Ask Don't Tell military policy. '"This is the dilemma for working in the Republican Party: the candidates need to appeal to the far right and that sometimes means bashing the gay community," said Stephen Gaskill, a former spokesman for the Florida Red and Blue committee that unsuccessfully tried to block a 2008 Florida constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Fabrizio was the Republican pollster hired by Florida Red and Blue, which paid his firm more than $264,000. Fabrizio also lives in one of the friendliest of gay towns, Miami Beach, where he has a South Beach condominium. Fabrizio, who said by email that he couldn't chat this morning, was just quoted in the Huffington Post as having opposed the Perry ad, which he described as "nuts" in an email to Perry ad man Nelson Warfield, a longtime friend of Fabrizio's. Both men were top advisors to Rick Scott in his gubernatorial campaign last year.
UPDATE: How's this for some cognitive dissonance?
"It is the height of hypocrisy for Tony Fabrizio to have been a part of that," said Jimmy LaSalvia, co-founder and executive director of GOProud. "He has lined his pockets for years with money from the gay community to conduct polls to ostensibly help gay people in this country, and for him to be a part of this is the height of Washington hypocrisy. It is absolutely what is wrong with Washington. It is all about the payday for these people."
For his part, Fabrizio tells the Huffington Post while he was "uncomfortable" with the ad, he won't comment otherwise. "If you start answering personal attacks, you are just rewarding the attacker."

TENNESSEE: High School Student Commits Suicide After Anti-Gay Bullying [UPDATED]

Yesterday Tennessee high school student Jacob Rogers killed himself after complaining about anti-gay bullying from his classmates that had forced him to drop out of school. Rogers left suicide notes that included the passwords for his phone and his email so that authorities could view what he had endured.
Friends say that kids bullied Jacob Rogers at Cheatham County Central High School for the past four years, but in the past few months it had become so bad he dropped out of school. And Wednesday, he ended his life. "He started coming home his senior year saying 'I don't want to go back. Everyone is so mean. They call me a faggot, they call me gay, a queer,'" friend Kaelynn Mooningham said. Kaelynn said her friend Jacob felt ignored. "Jacob told me no one was helping him. He constantly was going to guidance," she said. But Cheatham County Schools Director Dr. Tim Webb said the school was only aware of one incident of bullying. "She actually intervened and called the students in accused of bullying or picking. She called them in, talked to them and gave them warnings. Subsequently after that, she ran into the student and asked him if things were better and he indicated that things were better," Webb said.
The above-linked article does not disclose if Rogers was actually gay.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: As noted in the above-linked story, the family of Jacob Rogers does not have the money for a funeral. Today JMG, Towleroad, and Dan Savage at Seattle's Stranger are posting the below Paypal donation link. Savage is capping the donations at $5000. Anything over that amount will go to the Trevor Project, GLSEN, and the It Gets Better Project. I'm kicking in with $20 to get things rolling here. If your situation allows, please consider making a small donation too.

UPDATE II: In less than three hours, the fundraising goal has been met. I don't say it enough, but I love my people. Big bear hugs to all of you.

Of the 20 percent who are not Christian, non-believers make up the largest segment, though the number of self-identified atheists is tiny. Today we are launching our 'Adopt An Atheist' campaign, the predicate of which is, 'We want atheists to realize that there may be Christians in their community, even if those Christians don’t even know they are Christian.' If we hurry, these closeted Christians can celebrate Christmas like the rest of us. As an added bonus, they will no longer be looked upon as people who believe in nothing, stand for nothing and are good for nothing." - Catholic League blowhard Bill Donohue, asking his followers to troll atheist websites and offer to adopt people.

SPECIAL JMG HOLIDAY MESSAGE: Fuck you, Bill Donohue. Fuck you right in your motherfucking ear.

TODAY: Final Prop 8 Hearing

The Ninth Circuit Court will today hear final arguments on why the Prop 8 trial tapes should be made public. More importantly, they will hear arguments regarding the motion to vacate Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling because he is gay. I'll be live-tweeting the proceedings and will (hopefully) have live video here on JMG.
