Former Planned Parenthood Staffer Says...

Covenant News, November 2005:
The Planned Parenthood Federation of America has hired an official from the Log Cabin Republicans to head its Republican Party outreach efforts. One pro-choice Republican leader called the move "very exciting," but conservative opponents of the nation's top abortion provider are not impressed. Christopher Barron has served as political director of the homosexual advocacy group within the GOP since February 2004. A press release announcing his departure from the Log Cabin Republicans praised Barron for helping the organization "achieve important progress in making the conservative case for gay and lesbian equality."

Atheist Banner To Fly Over Super Bowl

A banner plane will tow an atheist message above the Super Bowl tomorrow. But not during the actual game, apparently.
An Atheist civil rights group announced today that it will be flying an airplane banner on Super Bowl Sunday around Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The banner will read “Football beats church anytime – atheists.org.” The banner is scheduled to be in the air from 9:30-11:30 AM local time. Dave Silverman, President of American Atheists, stated, “We took advantage of a unique opportunity to remind many Americans that their religion is not as important as they like to pretend it is. In many cities around the country the running joke is that football is the most popular religion.” Mr. Silverman continued, “The banner will be seen by thousands of tailgaters, who clearly agree with American Atheists since they chose to sit on a tailgate instead of a pew. They chose to party with friends instead of praying with preachers.” American Atheists notes that statistically speaking there will be more atheists in Lucas Oil Stadium than Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists combined and doubled.

France Declares Scientology A Scam

Now if we could only get this kind of ruling here.
A French court has slapped a fraud sentence on the Church of Scientology, saying it targets vulnerable people for commercial gain. The ruling is a major setback for Scientologists in France, and it marks the first time here that the Church of Scientology has been convicted of organized fraud. The development puts its famous recruitment methods under a spotlight. Scientologists vehemently reject the conviction, saying that they are the victims of anti-cult organizations trying to destroy them. “Respect my religion,” chanted several dozen Scientologists, braving sub-zero temperatures in the front of a courthouse in Paris.
But really, France. How different are alien spaceships and soul volcanoes from water-walking zombies and talking shrubberies?

VIRGINIA: Adoption Agencies To Be Permitted To Refuse Gay Couples

Both chambers of the Virginia legislature today approved a bill that will make it legal for adoption agencies, however they are funded, to refuse gay couples.
The state House voted 71-28 to pass the legislation Friday. Earlier in the day, a Senate committee endorsed its version of the Republican-backed measure on an 8-7 party-line vote. Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell is expected to sign the bill. Supporters say the measure protects religious freedom. Opponents argue that the government, which contracts with dozens of private, state-licensed child placement agencies, should not sanction discrimination.
This will surely end up in court.

Man Overboard On All Gay Cruise

I started getting emailed tips and tweets early this morning that a passenger had gone overboard on the all gay Atlantis cruise of the Caribbean. Now the story has hit the news.
Eyewitness News has learned a passenger has fallen overboard from an Atlantis cruise liner off the coast of Mexico on Friday. An ABC7 photographer aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise charter said passengers were awakened Friday morning by an emergency announcement, saying a man was believed to be overboard. The ship's captain confirmed the incident to passengers and said all rescue attempts are being made. An emergency assembly was called so passengers could be counted. The ship was on its way back to port in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It stopped Friday off-shore near Cozumel, Mexico.
RELATED: In October 2009, GLAAD board member Spencer Yu died aboard an Atlantis cruise. Three months later another Atlantis passenger was found dead in his cabin. Both deaths were rumored to have been drug-related, but this was never publicly confirmed (to my knowledge.) In February of last year an Atlantis passenger (on the same ship in today's report) was arrested for dealing drugs on board. It's important to note that there's no mention of drugs in today's news report.

On Husbands

About seven years ago I wrote this:
When gay marriage finally becomes widespread, how quickly (if at all) will we act to correct each other when we identify someone's significant other?

"There goes David and his husband."

"Oh, they aren't married, just living together."

Will we do that? Will we give those who choose not to marry a verbal downgrade to "just living together", to "just boyfriends"? Gay people have traditionally operated fast and loose with the rules of defining and naming our relationships.

Will there be a sense of relief then, as we convert to straight society's hierarchy of relationships and start identifying couples as: dating, living together, or married? I think that the implied legitimacy of a legal marriage will tempt many of our people to begin resorting relationships into those separate categories. And I don't know how I feel about that.
It took almost seven years, but this very thing happened to me last night as I was rather archly informed that the couple I'd referred to as "husbands" were not married. They've just lived together for 22 years.

Fuck that, they are husbands.

NY Rabbi Busted In Holocaust Scam

Rabbi Menachem Youlus has been selling copies of the Torah he claimed to have unearthed using a metal detector at Auschwitz. Yeah, that never happened.
Rabbi Youlus could receive up to 20 years in prison on each of the two counts when he is sentenced on June 21, but sentencing guidelines recommend terms of 51 to 63 months. Prosecutors said he sold fake Torahs over a period of six years, and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars through Save a Torah, a nonprofit organization he helped found in 2004. The scheme took several forms, according to a complaint filed by the United States attorney’s office. Prosecutors said Rabbi Youlus solicited more than $1 million from Save a Torah, asking that the money be paid to a bookstore he owned in Maryland, called the Jewish Bookstore, and explaining that the money was payment for restoring old and damaged scrolls.
It turns out that self-proclaimed "Jewish Indiana Jones" never even visited the places where he claimed to have found the scrolls.

Adam Lambert To Front Queen?

Speculation began last year and now there might be some news, if you believe one British tabloid.
Freddie Mercury’s place will be taken by Adam Lambert, the American Idol winner. He wowed fans by singing with original members Brian May and Roger Taylor at MTV’s EMAs in Belfast last November. Adam told me he can’t wait to sing with guitarist Brian, 64, and drummer Roger, 62. The flamboyant 30-year-old revealed: “The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie and the band by singing some fuckingg great songs. It’s to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of.” Sonisphere’s line-up, which also includes metal veterans Faith No More, tours Europe before hitting Knebworth on July 6-8, scene of Queen’s final gig with Freddie in 1986. Adam enthused: “After the EMAs, I heard faint little slithers of a backlash from people saying: ‘You can’t replace Freddie Mercury.’ But I already knew that. “There’s no intention in my mind of replacing Freddie. That’s impossible. “The way I’m choosing to view it is that it’s a great honour and one I’m in no way going to shirk.”
One suspicious mistake in the linked source is that Lambert did not win American Idol, he was runner-up. So we'll see....

"Ex-Gay" Douchebag Greg Quinlan Demands Apology From NJ Lawmakers

"I want to talk first of all about something I heard from the very beginning by people of this Legislature that we are bigots as people of faith, because we do not hold that homosexual marriage should be codified. That somehow we are bigots and we are ideologues because we are people of faith. I want to address that hate. Everyone in this room who is a person of faith deserves an apology from one of the sponsors of this bill for calling us bigots.

"To date there is zero evidence that anyone is born a homosexual, zero. In fact it's homosexual researchers and scientists that are proving that homosexuality is not innate and had no biological ideology. Homosexuality is not immutable. There are many ex-gays; Anne Heche, to name one, Sinead O'Connor and myself. I left the homosexual lifestyle almost 20 years ago. Lived as a homosexual activist for 10 years of my life." - PFOX head Greg Quinlan, speaking at yesterday's marriage hearing before the New Jersey Assembly. (Via On Top Magazine)

WASHINGTON: Hate Groups Promise A November Vote On Same-Sex Marriage

While Washington's same-sex marriage bill is destined to be on the governor's desk within two weeks, it's pretty much a certainty that the issue will be forced onto the November ballot.
"This is an issue that moves people unlike most," said Joseph Backholm, executive director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington. Backholm's group was among those who unsuccessfully tried to overturn the state's 2009 expansion of domestic partnership rights for gay and lesbian couples, known as the "everything but marriage" bill. The law was upheld by 53 percent of voters. Backholm said that this campaign will be different than that behind R-71. "We're going to be more organized," he said. "We'll have a strong state effort and a larger national presence as well." Backholm pointed to the precedent of voters overturning gay marriage laws in California in 2008 and in Maine the following year. "We're not talking the Bible Belt," he said. "Even in left-leaning states, they've looked at this, raised an eyebrow and said, 'no, that's not marriage.'"
Hate groups need to gather 120,577 signatures by June 6th. If they fail, marriages may commence immediately. If they succeed, there will be no marriages until the vote.

Eddie Long Crowned As King

Unbelievable:
Bishop Eddie Long returned to the pulpit on Sunday in royal fashion. For his Jan. 29th service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where he took a leave of absence late last year in the wake of child molestation allegations, Bishop Long featured a Rabbi, Ralph Messer, who spoke at length about why Long is a “king.” Presenting what he claimed were 300-year-old sacred scrolls discovered some 70 years ago outside a concentration camp in Germany, Messer pronounced Eddie Long as king in “God’s government.” To illustrate the point, Long’s aides lift him in his chair, which doubles as a throne, and carry him around the stage.

New Jersey Marriage Bill Advances

After hours and hours of some of the most repulsively anti-gay testimony ever to spew from my speakers, New Jersey's marriage equality bill advanced out of committee by a vote of 5-2.
The legislation still faces votes in both houses of the Legislature, with the Senate vote set for Feb. 13. Republican Gov. Chris Christie has promised to veto the Marriage Equality and Religious Exemption Act if it reaches his desk. Proponents touted the bill’s protections for religious organizations and affiliated groups that refuse to conduct a same-sex marriage as part of free exercise of religion, but that doesn’t address core religious concerns, said Rabbi Moshe Bressler, an Orthodox Jew from Lakewood. Bressler said state sanction of something other than marriages of one man and one woman would be an “attack on marriage and an attack on the family. “If you vote against the bill, it’s a vote for God. Voting for the bill, that’s not creating an environment to prosper,” Bressler said.
Towleroad point out this quote from Gov. Chris Christie: "The polls that I’ve seen show that if this goes to the ballot, I lose. How much more magnanimous could I be?"

Is Marriage Repeal Dead In NH?

The New Hampshire House GOP has released their agenda for the rest of the year and guess what is missing?
Republican House Leader Rep. D.J. Bettencourt of Salem said Thursday the House was focusing on economic and education reforms that would bring job creators to New Hampshire and put citizens back to work. Hot-button social issues like gun rights, immigration and labor reform were all absent from the agenda, but the biggest hole was left by gay marriage, which is the target of several bills aiming to repeal it. Republicans also said in 2011 they were putting off social issues to focus on strengthening the state's economic footing.
This isn't a dead deal for sure, but I'm betting the governor's vow to veto did it in. Story developing...

SPLC Sues To Overturn DOMA

The Southern Poverty Law Center is suing the federal government on behalf of a disabled lesbian veteran and her partner.
Tracey Cooper-Harris served her country for 12 years in the U.S. Army. She received more than two dozen medals and commendations. She was honorably discharged in 2003. In 2010, Cooper-Harris was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disabling disease that attacks the brain and central nervous system. The Department of Veterans Affairs denied Cooper-Harris’ request for benefits for her partner, even though their same-sex marriage was recognized by California. The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a lawsuit on behalf of Cooper-Harris and her partner, charging that the Department of Veterans Affairs discriminated against them by denying these benefits but granting them to spouses in heterosexual marriages. It also charges the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional because it bans federal agencies from recognizing such same-sex marriages, denying these couples benefits available to couples in heterosexual marriages

LAUNCHED: Coalition To Repeal DOMA

Alliance for Justice, American Civil Liberties Union, American Federation of Government Employees, American Federation of Musicians, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees, American Federation of Teachers, Americans for Democratic Action, Anti-Defamation League, Association of Flight Attendants, Center for American Progress, Coalition of Labor Union Women, COLAGE, Courage Campaign, Communications Workers of America, Family Equality Council, Feminist Majority, Freedom to Marry, GLAD, Gay & Lesbian Medical Association, Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), Human Rights Campaign, Immigration Equality, Interfaith Alliance, International Union, UAW, Lambda Legal, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Log Cabin Republicans, MALDEF, National Black Justice Coalition, National Center for Lesbian Rights, National Council of Jewish Women, National Education Association, National Fair Housing Alliance, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, National Organization for Women, National Partnership for Women and Families, National Women’s Law Center, People for the American Way, PFLAG, Pride at Work, AFL-CIO, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), Service Employees International Union, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, Stonewall Democrats, Third Way, Unitarian Universalist Association, United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, and USAction.
Last fall the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a repeal of DOMA, but the bill was not advanced to the full chamber because it would not pass there. A House version of a DOMA repeal bill would likely not survive its committee. However there is some hope that Democrats may improve their position in Congress this fall.

Trump To Endorse Gingrich Romney

UPDATE: Contrary to widely-published reports, Donald Trump will today endorse Mitt Romney, not Newt Gingrich. Via Politico:
We reported, along with the New York Times and the Associated Press among others, last night that Donald Trump is expected to endorse Newt Gingrich, according to sources around his campaign. The Times went first with the news in terms of national outlets. What a difference 12 hours makes - Trump's endorsement is not likely to go to Gingrich, others said, and may in fact go to Mitt Romney when he makes his announcement at 11:30 a.m. Matt Drudge, who has a relationship with top Romney officials, this morning - linking to our Gingrich story - was the first to indicate it would be Romney.
Donald Trump is reportedly going to endorse Newt Gingrich today. Which means that Trump's internet campaign probably won't happen. Pity.

"They parade their sin like Sodom. And they do it under the rainbow banner almost as if they're saying 'God, you can do nothing to us' because they don't believe that Sodom was destroyed because of homosexuality so they aren't learning the lesson from that. In fifty years we have seen this tiny group of people - they really only represent about two percent of the population - that has grown from being a reviled subculture to now having more power in the legislatures and courtrooms of the world than the Christian church does. In fifty years!

"Nothing has ever grown that fast globally, nothing. Not Islam, not Darwinism, not Marxism, nothing has ever grown that fast. Which shows you that this is a spiritual phenomenon that is unparallelled and that's why God has selected it, singled out this particular behavior to be the indicator of extreme apostasy, the furthest edge of deviance and the warning sign that things are in really, really bad shape." - Hate group leader Scott Lively, speaking to a Sacramento church. Today's Lie From NOM

NOM is claiming that the Navy ordered chaplains to perform same-sex marriages.
Did you see this day coming? Who would have thought we needed a federal statute to protect military chaplains—and other servicemen and women—who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman? But just months after the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, there is a full-on battle for marriage raging within our nation's armed forces. Last April, the Navy issued new "sensitivity training" guidelines that required Navy chaplains to perform same-sex marriages.
That never happened, of course, but as we've seen countless times, NOM has no problem issuing easily disproved lies when it comes to fundraising. NOM Exposed points out that the Navy actually said that chaplains could choose to perform any ceremony. Don't expect a retraction.

Quote Of The Day - Jessica Lappin

"Most New Yorkers probably don’t realize that, right now, about 160 New York City schools are doubling as churches. I’m not talking about a religious after school club or bible study group. These churches use the same public space, at the same time, in the same school each and every week for free, or just the cost of custodial fees. Even worse, some are using taxpayer-subsidized space to preach hatred of homosexuals and people of other faiths. What’s more, the state legislation in both the Assembly and the Senate is so broad it would 'prohibit the adoption of restrictions to exclude or limit speech during non-school hours, including speech that expresses religious conduct or viewpoints.'

"What does that mean? It means the Department of Education wouldn’t be allowed to turn away any groups at all, religious or otherwise – not even the Ku Klux Klan or a pornography club could be denied. Freedom of religion and the separation of church and state are unique and critical elements of our democracy. Nowhere in America is that wall more apparent or important than in 21st century New York, a city more culturally, ethnically, and religiously diverse than any in history." - NYC Councilwoman Jessica Lappin, via press release.

Today the NYC Council will consider a resolution endorsing the above-mentioned state bill that would allow religious services in NYC public schools despite a recent federal appeals court ruling which banned churches from renting or having free access to public schools. Last week the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the appeals court decision. At least 35 NYC Council members have cosponsored the resolution.

FLORIDA: State Senate Passes Bill To Allow Student Prayers In Public Schools

The Florida Senate has approved a bill that would allow students to pray in public schools as long as the prayers weren't organized by adults. Oh, right.
The “inspirational messages” proposal (SB 98), proposed by Orlando Democratic Sen. Gary Siplin and approved by a 31-8 vote, would allow school boards to adopt policies granting students the right to have prayers at any school assembly but school administrators, teachers, coaches or other personnel from scrutinizing or participating in the prayers. A handful of Democrats argued against the bill, saying students already have the opportunity to pray privately objecting that the measure could create divisiveness. “We don’t have an issue in the state of Florida with the lack of ability of public school students to pray openly. What we want to do is keep our public school kids with the one inspirational message they all need: study, study, study. When they come to the school they can park their religious beliefs at home,” said Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Delray Beach, who is Catholic.
One legislator warns that the bill will backfire once a "smart-alecky" kid organizes a student prayer from the Koran.

As longtime readers know, there are four or five JMG entries that I repost every year. This is one of them. My dear friend Daniel Johnson, who threw the most kickass Groundhog's Day birthday parties for himself, would have been 55 years old today. His was a life that burned brightly and I am illuminated still. Daniel Johnson, 1957-1997.

2. The lesions don't bother me, I will hold you.

3. I will pretend nothing is wrong when you want me to pretend and when you want me to hold you, I will hold you.

4. I will make plans with you to go to your favorite places that we both know you can no longer go and I will sit with you and look at your pictures of these places and I will hold you.

5. I will ride with you on the train to your doctor's office and when you get sick in the station, I will hold you.

6. I will see the Post-It notes you put all over the house reminding yourself to do everyday things like "Turn off stove" and "Lock front door" and I'll pretend the disease isn't robbing your mind and when you tell me something for the third time in ten minutes, I won't let you know, I will hold you.

7. I will go to Safeway with you because you need to get out into the world and when the diarrhea overwhelms you and you shit your pants in the middle of the store, I will call us a cab and in the cab, I will hold you.

8. I will make you mix-tapes of our favorite songs from last summer, just like you asked me to, and when the memories make you sad instead of happy and you throw the tapes in the trash, I won't get angry, I will hold you.

9. I will sit up all night with you because the fevers and night sweats won't let you sleep. In the morning, I will change your drenched sheets and help you out of the shower and when you weep from the sight of your withered body in the mirror on the bathroom door, I will hold you.

10. I will hold you, Daniel.

UPDATE: Washington State Senate Passes Marriage Equality Bill 28-21!!!

UPDATE: Under the leadership of openly gay Sen. Ed Murray and with the critical support of several Republican Senators, the bill has passed after failed attempts to attach nasty amendments. One of the failed GOP amendments would have made it legal for any business to discriminate against gay couples. Another would have immediately placed the issue on the November ballot. That will likely happen anyway via a public petition drive, but the Democrats swatted it down. Onward to the Washington House, where passage is guaranteed.

Congratulations Washington!

Amazon Supports Gay Marriage!

Online behemoth Amazon has publicly stated their support for the marriage equality bill about to be voted on by the legislature of their home state. Wahoo!
"Amazon is joining other Pacific Northwest companies, including Microsoft, Starbucks and Nike, in support of Washington state's marriage equality bills," Amazon said in a statement released by spokeswoman Mary Osako. "The spirit of these bills is consistent with our longstanding employment practices." Gay marriage supporters believe they have enough votes to pass the measure out of both houses, and Gov. Chris Gregoire has said she'll sign it into law.
Do I hear another boycott call? Squeee!

ACLU Sues Feds Over Drone Attacks

The ACLU is suing the Obama administration to force the release of information regarding drone attacks that some argue have resulted in the defacto executions of American citizens without trial. The Justice Department contends that any American who joins a foreign terrorist organization has become an enemy combatant and therefore has surrendered rights as a U.S. citizen.
Wednesday’s ACLU complaint referred to wide media coverage of the administration’s 2010 decision to place Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen allegedly allied with Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, on “kill lists” compiled by the CIA and the military’s Joint Special Operations Command. Awlaki was killed in September in Yemen by a joint CIA-JSOC drone operation that similarly received wide publicity. Samir Khan, also a U.S. citizen, was reported killed in the same attack. Awlaki’s 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, was reportedly killed in a JSOC drone strike two weeks later. At the time, public statements by Obama confirmed the elder Awlaki’s death. News reports indicated that the operation had been carried out after the administration requested and received an opinion from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel saying that targeting and killing U.S. citizens overseas was legal under domestic and international law.
The biggest problem for some progressives is the government's claimed right to secretly classify a person an enemy of the nation. Such decisions are cloaked for "national security" concerns.

Romney Glitter-Bombed In Minnesota

Early reports on Twitter say a "young man" was dragged away by security after "thoroughly" dousing Romney in glitter. I suspect this may be the same kid that glittered Crazy Eyes late last year. At this writing, Ann Romney is reportedly trying to brush the glitter off her husband while he speaks to the press. ABC reports he "has a ton of glitter in his hair."

UPDATE: Here's the clip.

Change For Overseas JMG Readers

Google has made a change in the way Blogger-hosted sites resolve their URLs in some foreign countries. Instead of ending in dot-com, some of you now see URLs that end in your country code. This change is playing havoc with the comment system for some folks. While we figure out a solution that works everywhere, you might try using an IP-blocking browser add-on. That seems to work for the short term. (I do own JoeMyGod.com, but that address will just redirect you to Blogger.)

RELATED: As I've mentioned here in the past, JMG remains on Blogger (for now) due to persistent hacking attempts by our enemies. Such attacks have brought down other well-known gay/progressive sites, but I'm told that to get to JMG on Blogger, the entire service would have to come down.
