Whitney Houston Found Dead At Age 48

Little is known so far.
Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48. Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown. News of Houston's death came on the eve of music's biggest night — the Grammy Awards. It's a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to case a heavy pall on Sunday's ceremony. Houston's longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday; it was unclear if it was going to go forward.
Shocking. But also, not so shocking.

VIDEO: My favorite of many great ones.

UPDATE: The only time I saw Whitney in concert was at NYC Pride's 1999 Pier Dance. I'll never forget the crowd's reaction.

Gay Flash Mob At NYC JCPenney

A mob of pink-wearing gays descended on midtown Manhattan's JC Penney today in a "buy-cott" in support of Ellen DeGeneres, who since having been hired as the chain's spokesperson has been the subject of a national anti-gay campaign by the American Family Association. JC Penney management was expecting us and greeted all with handshakes and smiles as credit card waving gay men entered the store, which is located at the former site of the famed Gimbels department store. Lots of happy handsome men can be found in the slideshow below, including a couple of industrious boys who bedazzled their shirts with Ellen's name. Fun day!

Madge On M.I.A.

"I was really surprised. I didn't know anything about it. I wasn't happy about it. I understand it's punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity; it seemed negative. It's such a teenager, irrelevant thing to do. There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place." - Madonna, responded to the kerfuffle about M.I.A. flipping the bird during her Super Bowl performance.

Obama Speaks To Wealthy Gays

Last night President Obama spoke a small audience of wealthy LGBT Democrats, raising over $1.4M at the $38K per person event at the DC home of a married lesbian couple. An excerpt from his speech:
The work that we've done with respect to the LGBT community I think is just profoundly American and is at the heart of who we are. (Applause.) And that’s why I could not be prouder of the track record that we've done, starting with the very beginning when we started to change, through executive order, some of the federal policies. Kathleen -- the work that she did making sure that hospital visitation was applied equally to same-sex couples, just like with anybody else's loved ones. The changes we made at the State Department. The changes we made in terms of our own personnel policies. But also some very high-profile work, like "don't ask, don't tell."

And what's been striking over the course of these last three years is because we've rooted this work in this concept of fairness, and we haven't gone out of our way to grab credit for it, we haven't gone out of our way to call other folks names if they didn’t always agree with us on stuff, but we just kept plodding along -- because of that, in some ways what's been remarkable is how readily the public recognizes this is the right thing to do.
Over at Metro Weekly, reporter Chris Geidner has quotes from the attendees, which included such high-powered gay names as Tim Gill and James Hormel.

NY Sen. Ruben Diaz On Prop 8

"The Ninth Circuit Court in California has decided to overrule Proposition 8, a ballot measure that added a provision to the California Constitution that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California”. You should know that this Ninth Circuit Court panel of unelected judges has decided that they know better than the will of more than half of California’s population. People often ask me how I cope with all of the chaos that surrounds us. I tell them that as a Christian, I am not afraid. I know that no matter whatever trials and tribulations life presents to any of us, I trust the Lord. This does not give me nor anyone else the right to sit back and do nothing." - New York Sen. Ruben Diaz, writing on this official state webpage.

RELATED: You may recall that Diaz has twice led hate marches through the streets of Manhattan in which tens of thousands of raving Hispanic evangelicals waved anti-gay placards as their religious leaders used loudspeakers to cite biblical verses calling for the executions of homosexuals.

BRITAIN: Muslim Men Sentenced For Distributing "Death To Gays" Pamphlets

Three Muslim men have been sentenced to prison for handing out "death to gays" pamphlets in the British town of Derby. Last month the men were found guilty of inciting hatred under the recently revised Public Order Act, which now forbids such anti-gay actions.
Ihjaz Ali, Kabir Ahmed and Razwan Javed were found guilty of stirring up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation at Derby Crown Court last month. The leaflet, titled Death Penalty?, was distributed in the build-up to a gay pride event in July 2010. Ali was jailed for two years while Ahmed and Javed were given 15 month sentences. It is the first prosecution of its kind since new laws came into force in 2010. Ali, 42, of Fairfax Road, Ahmed, 28, of Madeley Street, and Javed, 27, of Wilfred Street, had claimed they were simply doing their duty as Muslims to condemn sinful behaviour in society. Two other men, Mehboob Hussain and Umar Javed, who were also charged with the same offence, were found not guilty. Judge John Burgess said: "You have been convicted of intending to stir up hatred. "It follows that your intention was to do great harm in a peaceful community."
Lawyers for the men objected to their prosecution on the grounds of freedom of speech, pointing out that the pamphlets merely quoted well-known passages from the Koran. However the judge noted that the materials also stated that "capital punishment" was the only cure for homosexuality.

Archdiocese Of Milwaukee Accused Of 8000 Incidents Of Child Molestation

Court documents filed in the bankruptcy case for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee appear to have revealed over 8000 incidents of child molestation not previously reported. New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, who is about to be elevated to Cardinal, is the former Archbishop Of Milwaukee. Some suspect Dolan of having hidden over $130M in church funds in order to avoid massive court-ordered child molestation settlements.
Archdiocese spokeswoman Julie Wolf said she did not have enough information to respond to the assertion, made by attorney Jeffrey Anderson during a pivotal hearing before U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Susan V. Kelley. Anderson represents about 350 of the 570 victim-survivors who have filed claims in the case. But Peter Isely of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests speculated that some are likely members of religious orders, such as Capuchins or Franciscans. Order officials do not typically make public the names of their accused members, and the archdiocese claims it is not responsible for them, though they have historically helped to staff its parishes and schools. "This is a public safety crisis, a child safety crisis that needs to be investigated," Isely said at a news conference on the federal courthouse steps, surrounded by fellow survivors and reporters. "We need to know who they are and where they are. How can there be 8,000 crimes committed by over 100 offenders and there be no accountability?" he said.
The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has vigorously sought the dismissal of molestation charges against several priests, arguing that the statute of limitations on their crimes has expired. (Tipped by JMG reader Tom)

Anti-Gay Adoption Bill Advances In VA

Yesterday the Virginia Senate approved a GOP-sponsored bill which allows state-licensed agencies to deny adoption to anybody who is found unacceptable for "religious reasons."
The bill effectively would allow faith-based organizations, such as Catholic Charities, to legally deny the placement of gay children and the adoption of children by gay parents. Senate Bill 349, sponsored by Sen. Jeff McWaters, R-Virginia Beach, codifies recently adopted state regulations governing the adoption and foster-care placement of children by state-funded agencies. It passed the chamber on a 22-18 vote, with two Democrats — Sens. Charles J. Colgan, D-Prince William, and Phillip P. Puckett, D-Russell siding with all 20 Republicans in the evenly divided chamber.
The Family Foundation of Virginia crowed: "The passage of conscience protection for private child-placement agencies by a bipartisan majority in the Senate is a tremendous victory for religious liberty and for the thousands of children and families around Virginia that are served by these agencies." Gov. Bob McConnell has said that he will sign the bill.

Gov To Sign WA Marriage Bill On Monday

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire will sign her state's marriage equality bill on Monday morning, thereby setting the clock ticking on the rush to collect referendum signatures to block gay marriage at the ballot box.
A statehouse signing ceremony in Olympia, Washington's capital, was slated for 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday. The bill won final legislative approval from the state House of Representatives on Wednesday by a vote of 55-43. The measure will not take effect before early June. Opponents have vowed to seek its repeal at the polls in November, but they cannot begin collecting signatures for a petition to overturn the measure by referendum until it is signed into law.

BRITAIN: Christian Hotel Loses Appeal To Refuse Service To Same-Sex Couples

In a case watched closely in the United States, today a British hotelier lost his court battle to have the right to refuse accommodations to same-sex couples.
The Court of Appeal has today upheld a landmark court ruling in favour of a gay couple refused a room by the religious owners of Cornwall hotel. Martin Hall and Steven Preddy, civil partners, had successfully sued devout Christians Peter and Hazelmary Bull for sexual orientation discrimination. They had been turned away from the Chymorvah Hotel near Penzance in 2008 under the Bulls’ policy of not allowing unmarried couples to share rooms. In January 2011 a judge at Bristol County Court ruled that the Bulls’ behaviour amounted to direct discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, and awarded a total of £3,600 damages to Mr Hall and Mr Preddy.
Ever since the first ruling in this case, American hate groups have cited it as an example of the coming avalanche of "religious oppression" in the United States. Today's decision will surely make it into the stump speeches of anti-gay candidates.

Right Wing Watch On Bryan Fischer

Some folks are highly critical of this blog's heavy coverage of AFA radio host Bryan Fischer. Yesterday Right Wing Watch blogger Kyle Mantyla laid it out just as I have here several times.
We often get asked why we pay attention to Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association and the relentless string of bigotry he produces on a daily basis; the assumption being that by highlighting his statements we are just giving him the attention he desires and that if we ignored him, he'd probably just go away. Obviously, we disagree and try to explain that we pay attention to Fischer because he is an influential leader within the Religious Right movement who is taken seriously by leading Republicans in Congress. And today's program provided a perfect example of this, as Fischer spent ten minutes once again going after JC Penney for hiring a known sexual deviant like Ellen DeGeneres immediately before conducting an interview with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

How To Help Anchorage

For years I've blogged about the attempt to gain LGBT protections in Anchorage, Alaska, a campaign that has been ongoing for the last 35 years. Today Dan Savage tips us to an opportunity to help.
The LGBT community in Anchorage—sick of waiting for basic civil rights protections—decided to put an equal rights initiative on the ballot. One Anchorage needed to gather 5,871 signatures to qualify; they quickly gathered 13,600 signatures. Voters in Anchorage will say "yes" or "no" to Proposition 5 on April 3. The mayor and city council don't have the power to veto or rescind a voter-approved initiative. So voters here approve Prop 5, Anchorage will finally—after 35 years—have an equal rights law that protects LGBT citizens. [snip] To combat the inevitable, last-minute anti-gay/anti-trans hate campaign, One Anchorage is raising money to get television ads on the air up here in the last weeks of the campaign. They're asking people to consider donating $35—one dollar for each year that Anchorage has been fighting for equality and basic civil rights protection.
Hit the links for more info and donation pages.

"I like the word that you used there, ‘cannibalized,’ because there is a scientific term that’s called that, ‘I want to have sex with that man so I can be like him, so I can become a part of him.’ It is a sexual, emotional cannibalization. ‘That person has something I want, they look better than I do, they’re more muscular than I am, they’re more virile than I am, they have something I want,’ and it’s a type of what we call an emotional or sexual cannibalism. Charges For Romney Glitter-Bomber

After being detained by the Secret Service, a Colorado student faces several charges for glitter-bombing Mitt Romney.
University of Colorado Boulder student Peter Smith, 20, told Reuters he threw glitter at Romney after the candidate's speech in Colorado on Tuesday to protest against his "general political philosophy," and not only his stance on gay marriage. A CNN video of the incident shows Romney shaking hands with supporters in an auditorium when the glitter is thrown at him and Secret Service agents usher him away. Smith was escorted out by other agents and local authorities, Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said. Denver authorities detained Smith for questioning on Tuesday night, and he was cited on misdemeanor charges of creating a disturbance, throwing a missile and an unlawful act on school property, Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
Smith faces up to six months in jail.

SPAIN: New Government Working To Reverse Progressive Reforms

Spain's Popular Party was elected late last year in a landslide and they are already working to reverse the many progressive reforms made by the Socialists. Gay marriage isn't yet openly up for repeal, but observers worry that day is coming soon.
People's Party rising star Justice Minister Alberto Ruíz Gallardón, a former mayor of Madrid and one of the most popular politicians in Spain, announced he would soon introduce a bill to overturn the changes the Socialists made to Spain's abortion law, reverting to the 1985 version.

According to the current version, approved in 2010, teenagers aged 16 and older can have an abortion without parental permission in some cases and don’t need to meet pre-approved circumstances, such as rape or mental illness, as long as it’s during the first trimester. The People's Party's reforms will reverse both changes, Mr. Gallardón reiterated in a radio interview on Feb. 1, although he didn’t offer specifics other than it would mirror the 1985 version of the law.

And on Jan. 30, Education Minister José Ignacio Wert announced that a new law would replace the civic education curriculum that Socialist introduced in 2006, which included lessons on religious, racial, and sexual tolerance that were loudly criticized by the Catholic Church and the country’s extreme right. Mr. Wert said he would eliminate “issues that controversial and susceptible to ideological indoctrination,” although he didn’t offer more details.
The Popular Party's new dominance of the legislature effectively means that it can institute any changes it wants to without interference.

"Ex-Gays" Are Being Oppressed!

PFOX is outraged that a Maryland school board member is "disgusted" by their flier campaign telling students that they don't have to "choose" to be gay.
"We call on the Montgomery County Board of Education to enforce its Nondiscrimination Policy and censure Superintendent Starr immediately," said Regina Griggs, executive director of PFOX. "The Policy mandates that schools provide 'an atmosphere where differences are understood and appreciated, and where all persons are treated fairly and with respect in an environment free of discrimination and ... abuse.' Clearly Starr has violated the Board's Policy," said Griggs. "Starr's verbal abuse, disrespectful behavior, and slurs against the ex-gay community amount to hate and illegal sexual orientation discrimination, which are all forbidden by the Policy." According to media reports, Starr is discussing with his staff how to turn the fliers into a learning experience for students. "Starr does not respect diversity and is creating an unsafe school environment," said Griggs.
NOTE: The media spokesdouche for the Maryland campaign has been FRC's Peter Sprigg, who has called for the criminalization of homosexuality.

Today's Hilarious Lie From NOM

Did you know that the Ninth Circuit Court declared marriage itself to be unconstitutional? According to NOM, it did. Brown Brownshirt:
I don't know about you but my blood is boiling! Not only must our founding fathers be rolling over in their graves with the preposterous notion that marriage is unconstitutional, but the ruling is an affront to the millions of Americans—the vast majority of the nation—who recognize that man does not have the right to redefine marriage. After all, how can federal judges redefine something that man didn't create? Make no mistake about it—yesterday's ruling will also be reversed by the Supreme Court.

I believe that God will stand by those who stand by His design for marriage. We have to do our part to get the case to the Supreme Court, where we can win the ultimate victory to preserve Prop 8 and traditional marriage across the land. Your donation is tax-deductible and will be kept confidential. Whether you can give $10,000, $1,000, $100 or $10, we need your help today! Every penny you give will go directly toward the Prop 8 legal expenses.
If they weren't so evil, they'd truly be laughable.
