SLOVAKIA: Anti-Gay Referendum FAILS Miserably Despite Backing Of Pope Francis

While the official result won't be announced until tomorrow, 100% of the ballots have been tabulated and multiple local media outlets are reporting that Slovakia's anti-gay referendum has failed miserably after only 21.4% of eligible voters turned out. Local activists had urged LGBT rights supporters to stay home today and that result of that tactic can be seen in that all three anti-gay ballot questions (above) were overwhelmingly backed by those who did vote. Per Slovak law, a minimum of 50% of registered voters must cast a ballot for any referendum item to be enacted.

The referendum was forced by a petition campaign by the Catholic Church-affiliated Alliance For Family, which turned in a reported 400,000 signatures. Also backing today's vote were the US-based Alliance Defending Freedom, NOM, C-FAM, and the World Congress of Families. On Wednesday, Pope Francis urged Slovaks to vote, saying that he encourages "everyone to continue their efforts in defense of the family, the vital cell of society."

While Slovakia already bans same-sex marriage, the referendum was meant to stiffen that constitutional ban and make it more difficult to undo the ban legislatively.  Today's result is gigantic middle finger - not only to the Catholic Church - but to American anti-gay groups who are increasingly seeking overseas victories in order to justify their existence to their ever-dwindling number of supporters at home. We look forward to seeing if any of them bother to alert those supporters about today's utter humiliation in Slovakia.

CALIFORNIA: Bruce Jenner Involved In Fatal Car Crash, Walks Away Uninjured

Via TMZ:
Bruce Jenner was involved in a horrific car accident on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu at around noon Saturday and one person is dead, TMZ has learned. Law enforcement sources tell us there were three vehicles involved in the crash. We're told there were 8 people involved and all sustained some sort of injury but one person died at the scene. One law enforcement source said Bruce seems to be ok, but again, we're told the seven survivors sustained some injuries, ranging from minor to moderate. Several eyewitnesses say the accident was caused when Bruce rear ended the white car and that car then went into oncoming traffic and was struck by the Hummer. Eyewitnesses say the driver of the white car -- a female -- died.
Twitter's asshole brigade is in full force already. "Already driving like a woman" is one of least offensive memes.

UPDATE: TMZ is reporting that as many as five paparazzi may have been chasing Jenner.

ALABAMA: Liberty Counsel To Represent Officials Who Refuse Marriage Licenses

Via press release from Liberty Counsel:
Liberty Counsel is representing Nick Williams and other Alabama probate judges who refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses. U.S. District Judge Callie Granade has set Monday as the day when she said the state should begin issuing these licenses. At this time, no Alabama probate judge is bound by Judge Granade’s order. This sole federal judge does not have jurisdiction to order all state probate judges to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. In addition, Alabama code does not mandate that a judge of probate perform marriage for anyone. No two people seeking a marriage ceremony have the right to demand that the ceremony be performed by a particular judge at a particular time and place. Any number of accommodations can be made that would give couples (whether same-sex or opposite-sex) access to a judge, while also protecting an individual judge’s rights of conscience and free speech. Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore has explained, in a letter and memorandum, the illegality and illegitimacy of current federal cases purporting to strike down marriage.
AL.com today reports that these probate judges may face criminal sanctions.
Alabama probate judges who refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples could ultimately be jailed for contempt if they disobey a federal judge's order, a few legal experts said Saturday. "If the (federal) court issues an order and they refuse to comply with the order, then the court can find them in contempt of court, which could result in a fine or incarceration until they purge themselves of the contempt," former U.S. District Court Judge U.W. Clemon said. "I don't think that's likely to happen," he quickly added. If a same-sex couple comes to an Alabama probate judge Monday and is denied a marriage license, then it would likely result in that couple filing a federal lawsuit against the probate judge, Clemon and others said. Or the couples could ask to intervene in the case in Mobile and seek an order from that judge. "Given the current state of the law they could probably get an injunction," Clemon said.
At least two judges have already declared that they will not issue licenses to any couple in order legally turn away same-sex couples. At least three others plan to only turn away gay couples.
At least five probate judges have said they won't issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Monday. Two, in Clarke and Pike counties, say they won't issue any licenses, even to opposite-sex couples. One, in Marengo County, says the forms will be available but she won't sign them. And probate judges in Washington and Covington counties say they won't issue to same-sex couples. Randall C. Marshall, legal director for the ACLU of Alabama, said that Judge Granade had made it clear that the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples is the law of Alabama after her order and that those who refuse will be subject to a court order. She also made it clear that the sanctions could include the probate judges being on the hook for the attorneys' fees of those same-sex couples, he said.
Alabama has 67 counties and a population of 4.9 million. Clarke and Pike counties have a combined population of  about 68,000. Marengo, Washington, and Covington counties have a combined population of about 75,000.  If these five counties are the only ones not issuing licenses on Monday morning, that will mean that same-sex marriage licenses will be available to more than 95% of Alabama's population.

SLOVAKIA: Low Voter Turnout Raises Hope That Anti-Gay Referendum Will Fail

Sources on Twitter are reporting a low voter turnout in some parts of Slovakia today, where a referendum backed by Pope Francis and multiple US-based Christian groups (list here) could affirm the already existing ban on same-sex marriage and forbid same-sex couples from adopting. According to the above Twitter user, some regions are reporting a 10% turnout so far, but at least one is claiming to have already met the 50% threshold. Per Slovak law, at least 50% of the country's 4.4M registered voters must cast a ballot for the bills to become enacted. The polls close at 4PM NYC time and official results are not expected until tomorrow. The referendum is costing Slovakia €6.3M and was forced by a petition campaign by the Catholic Church-affiliated Alliance For Family.

UPDATE: The polls are closing and we may get preliminary forecasts today. Stand by.

SCOTUSblog: No Alabama News Tonight

UPDATE: And no word this weekend either.
The U.S. Supreme Court is not expected to rule through the weekend on a request by Alabama lawyers to block gay marriage, the court's deputy clerk told attorneys late Friday afternoon. That would clear the way for U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. "Ginny" Granade's ruling striking down the state's same-sex marriage ban to take effect Monday. That is the day she set after ruling on Jan. 23 that the Marriage Protection Act and the Sanctity of Marriage Amendment violate the U.S. Constitution's due process and Equal Protection clauses.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday refused to extend the "stay" Granade issued beyond Feb. 9. The U.S. Supreme Court was Alabama's last chance to stop gay marriages. David Kennedy, an attorney for plaintiffs Kim McKeand and Cari Searcy in Mobile, said he expects same-sex marriage licenses to be issued first thing Monday morning. He said it is somewhat unusual that the high court would not rule one way or the other since the justices of issued rulings on request to delay gay marriages from beginning in other states.

Bill Donohue Slams Obama: Catholic Church Had Little To Do With Inquisition

"The Crusades were a defensive Christian reaction against Muslim madmen of the Middle Ages. Regarding the other fable, the Inquisition, the Catholic Church had almost nothing to do with it. The Church saw heretics as lost sheep who needed to be brought back into the fold. By contrast, secular authorities saw heresy as treason; anyone who questioned royal authority, or who challenged the idea that kingship was God-given, was guilty of a capital offense. It was they—not the Church—who burned the heretics. Indeed, secular authorities blasted the Church for its weak role in the Inquisition. The President should apologize for his insulting comparison." - Bill Donohue, writing for the Catholic League.

81% Of College Freshmen Back Marriage

In its annual American Freshman Survey, UCLA researchers polled over 150,000 incoming freshmen at 227 colleges and universities. This year's result on marriage:
The survey last asked about same-sex marriage in 2012. In the interim, support for same-sex couples having the legal right to marry has increased 6.5 percentage points to 81.5%. This increase covers a span of time where the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act and California’s state ban on same-sex marriage. Additionally, since these Supreme Court decisions, state-level same-sex marriage bans have fallen across the country in U.S. Circuit and District courts; as of January 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to take up four pending cases from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Figure 10 breaks support for same-sex marriage down by political ideology. The findings show that only students who identify as “far right” do not support same-sex marriage. Just 44.3% of students identified as “far right” either “agreed somewhat” or “agreed strongly” that same-sex couples should have the legal right to marry. This figure contrasts with 56.6% of “conservative” students, 84.7% of “middle-of-the-road” students, 93.9% of “liberal” students, and 90.5% of “far left” students. It is clear that same-sex marriage is no longer an issue for the vast majority of entering college freshmen.
We can't wait for Tony Perkins to spin this one.

One Million Moms Vs Sports Illustrated

Just in via email:
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is nothing but soft p-rn and most closely resembles Pl-yboy magazine than resembling an issue about swimming attire. This soft core p-rnography is displayed in many family stores, often at checkout counters which is offensive, disgusting, and disrespectful to families. This type of publishing is also extremely degrading to women. Families should be able to enter supermarkets, convenience and drug stores without being subjected to indecency. Since Sports Illustrated is pushing p-rnography, this magazine needs to be removed from stores immediately. Not only should Sports Illustrated be ashamed, but so should the stores that carry this filthy magazine. Why would a store risk hurting their reputation of being a family-friendly store by being associated with this dishonorable publication?
The email goes on to tell OMM supporters to pull a copy of the magazine from its rack and take it to a store manager with the promise that they'll never come back if they see future issues of Sports Illustrated on display.

Linda Harvey: Katy Perry Loves Satan

"The halftime performance of Katy Perry at the 2015 Super Bowl seemed to be all about choice. While the show was a spectacle on a grand scale, the content was shady. Perry held out foolish choices with eternal consequences on an altar of defiance. Sexual confusion is a natural companion to spiritual apostasy. Perry proceeded to bend over in some suggestive twerking with Lenny Kravitz and then sang another hit, telling us that she 'kissed a girl and liked it.' The lyrics go on to say, 'I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it.' This 2008 song is a prime expose of the lies embedded in the homosexual agenda. Not that Perry leads that effort. Just like her flirtation with Satan, she’s merely joining and providing theme music for a movement that long pre-dates her. There would be a predictable reaction if a well-known homosexual man crooned that he had 'kissed a boy and liked it' and he 'hopes his boyfriend don’t mind it.' If such a song even saw the light of day, it would be instantly labeled bigotry, hate and right-wing extremism. After all, one is never allowed to experiment in that direction. Satan and his mouthpieces will make sure such a notion never gains traction." - Linda Harvey, writing for Matt Barber's Barbwire. We have to presume Harvey meant "kissed a girl" in that last bit.

RELATED: According to numerous YouTube clips, Katy Perry is also a tool of the Illuminati, who are using her music videos to plant subliminal messages about Satan. Or something.

SLOVAKIA: Billboard Touts Pope's Support For Tomorrow's Anti-Gay Rights Vote

Via Yahoo News:
A big billboard of Pope Francis hangs over the center of Slovakia's capital, urging citizens to vote "Yes" in a referendum on restricting gay rights. The vote this weekend in this predominantly Roman Catholic nation — which follows a similar one that succeeded in Croatia in 2013 — points to a cultural divide within the European Union in which more established western members are rapidly granting new rights to gays, while eastern newcomers entrench conservative attitudes toward LGBT people. In Saturday's vote, Slovaks will be asked whether they agree to three points: that marriage can only be called a union between man and woman; that same-sex partners must be barred from adopting children; and that it's up to parents to decide whether their children receive sex education. While the constitution already defines marriage as between man and woman, the campaigners decided it was important to include the question in the referendum to reinforce traditional family values.
As I reported two days ago, local activists are urging Slovaks to stay home tomorrow as at least 50% of registered voters must cast a ballot in order for a bill to become law. Therefore no vote at all is better than merely voting no. (Tipped by JMG reader Tristam)

Proposed Copyright Law Change Could End Streaming & Downloads Of Cover Versions

Via Billboard Magazine:
On Thursday morning, the U.S. Copyright Office released a 245-page review of the music licensing regime with some bold proposals. It's not beach reading season, though, so it's understandable why the tome hasn't triggered a mass frenzy just yet. But wait! The government has just suggested a change that would make it possible for Taylor Swift not only to forbid her own works from appearing on Spotify, but stop those covering her there too. Specifically, the Copyright Office recommends that songwriters or their publishers still won't be able to stop cover songs in certain formats — presumably physical compact discs, broadcast radio and live concerts — but could stop covers from being posted on interactive (otherwise known as on-demand) sites or download sites. (The proposal might also give a non-interactive site like Pandora one advantage over Spotify.)
In 2011 famous control freak Prince declared that any covering of his songs without permission should be illegal. Prince: "That doesn't exist in any other art form, be it books, movies. There's only one version of Law & Order. There's several versions of Kiss and Purple Rain." Millions of YouTube's music clips are cover versions and its unclear if the original artist would have to take action to have them removed.

PARIS: City Bans Filming Of Action Films

Via BBC News:
The filming of movie action sequences has been restricted by authorities in Paris following last month's attacks in the French capital. "There's a problem with these action-type scenes, as the actors in uniform could be targets for terrorists," said police commander Sylvie Barnaud. "Also, the actors could pose confusion for the general public - during this highly sensitive period." She said the use of fake weapons and pyrotechnic effects were also banned. Tensions remain high following the attacks in January which left 20 people dead, including three gunmen. Armed police and soldiers continue to guard sensitive sites, including synagogues, media offices and large shopping areas. Paris is a popular destination for film-makers, with its wide boulevards and dramatic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Louvre pyramid. Official statistics provided by city authorities showed there were 930 film shoots in Paris last year, including approximately 20 international productions.
It's not known how long the restrictions will be in place.

Schock's Worst Week Gets Worser

From Blue Nation Review:
The month before the 2012 elections, Congressman Schock sold his house to a major Republican donor who was also one of his campaign supporters for a price that appears to far exceed the market value at the time. Ali Bahaj – then a Vice President at Caterpillar – and his wife Gloria have donated more than $45,000 over the last decade to the Caterpillar PAC and various Republican officeholders – including Congressman Schock. In fact, Federal Election Commission records show that Mr. and Mrs. Bahaj each made the maximum allowable donation to Aaron Schock’s campaign in 2008. Congressman Schock on October 16, 2012 sold his home to the Bahajs for $925,000. That’s more than three times the tax assessed value of the property. Zillow estimates that the house was worth approximately $695,000 that month. It’s possible Congressman Schock just got incredibly lucky finding the right buyer to throw him a life raft as homeowners around him were drowning. But it begs the question: Was this transaction more than just luck?

Eric Erickson: Obama Is An Atheist

Erickson writes at RedState:
Barack Obama is not, in any meaningful way, a Christian and I am not sure he needs to continue the charade. With no more elections for him, he might as well come out as the atheist/agnostic that he is. He took his first step in doing so yesterday in a speech reeking with contempt for faith in general and Christianity in particular. The President is a moral relativist. It was clear in his whole speech. He cannot condemn and attack ISIS as he should because in his mind what is truth? Truth is a nebulous concept with our post-modern President. With truth a nebulous concept, right and wrong are too. We know God cares about everyone. We know Christ came to die for sinners. But Christians know Christ is truth itself. To have truth, we must have Christ. To suggest that everyone can have some version of God and some version of truth is worldly babbling, not Christianity. Postscript: No, despite what some think, Barack Obama is not a closet Muslim. Islam teaches that “there is no god but God, Mohammed is the messenger of God.” Obama’s name is neither Allah nor Mohammed. Therefore, there is no room for him to presume himself a god. So, Obama with faith only in himself, must be an atheist/agnostic.
Similar rants are predictably sweeping across Teabagistan today.

ALABAMA: HRC Petitions State To Take Action Against Chief Justice Roy Moore

The Human Rights Campaign has launched a petition which demands that Alabama take disciplinary action against state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore:
Justice Moore has offered that the United States Constitution does not give the federal government the authority to regulate or define marriage. In the past, he has expressed his opinion that the state should have the power to punish homosexual behavior and has even authored a court opinion stating a parent's sexual orientation should be grounds for a parent losing custody over their own children. It is time for his invidious actions against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people to stop. HRC refuses to remain silent when a figure who was appointed to implement the law accordingly and follow the rules decides to abuse their power. Please sign our petition below urging the Judicial Inquiry Commission to take action against Alabama State Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy S. Moore: he has acted unethically and overstepped his authority to the detriment of the people of Alabama — both straight and LGBT.
NOTE: Signing the petition will put you on HRC's email list.

NEW JERSEY: Judge Bars Key "Ex-Gay" Witnesses From SPLC Case Against JONAH

The Southern Poverty Law Center won a key victory yesterday in their consumer fraud suit against New Jersey-based JONAH, Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality. From the SPLC:
Superior Court Judge Peter F. Bariso Jr. excluded Joseph Nicolosi [PHOTO], Christopher Doyle, Dr. James Phelan and Dr. John Diggs as witnesses for the defense, holding that their opinions are based on the false premise that homosexuality is a disorder. Bariso wrote that “the theory that homosexuality is a disorder is not novel but – like the notion that the earth is flat and the sun revolves around it – instead is outdated and refuted.” In New Jersey, scientific expert opinions must be based on premises and methodology generally accepted within the relevant professional field. Trial in the lawsuit against the New Jersey-based Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH) is scheduled to begin in the early summer of 2015. The judge’s ruling shows that much of the JONAH experts’ planned testimony is irrelevant.
Nicolosi is the founder of NARTH. Equality Case Files provides some quotes from the judge's ruling:
"The overwhelming weight of scientific authority concludes that homosexuality is not a disorder or abnormal. The universal acceptance of that scientific conclusion -- save for outliers such as JONAH -- requires that any expert opinions to the contrary must be barred."

"[T]he theory that homosexuality is a disorder is not novel but -- like the notion that the earth is flat and the sun revolves around it -- instead is outdated and refuted. Homosexuality was listed as a mental disorder in the DSM until its removal in 1973. Although the DSM has added newly recognized disorders as a result of evolving understandings of the medical field, this case presents the opposite situation: the APA removed homosexuality from the DSM upon concluding that it was not a disorder. JONAH has not identified any case that provides a standard for the admission of obsolete and discredited scientific theories. By definition, such theories are unreliable and can offer no assistance to the jury, but rather present only confusion and prejudice."

"The existence of a minority of conversion therapy proponents does not and cannot negate the fact that the DSM and its exclusion of homosexuality are generally accepted in the mental health field. Furthermore, a group of a few closely associated experts cannot incestuously validate one another as a means of establishing the reliability of their shared theories."
BOOM. Maggie Gallagher is the chairperson of the legal group defending JONAH.

DENVER: Mayor Cancels Speech To Task Force After Trans Advocates Storm Stage

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock canceled his planned welcoming address at the Task Force's annual  Creating Change conference last night after a large group of transgender advocates stormed the stage in protest of the recent killing of a Latina teen by Denver police. Michelle Garcia reports at the Advocate:
Task Force deputy executive director Russell Roybal and Creating Change director Sue Hyde welcomed thousands of attendees at this year's conference in Denver Thursday evening, and both showed emotion as they remarked upon the death of queer Latina Jessie Hernandez. Last week, Hernandez was fatally shot by police fire in Denver in a car authorities report was stolen. After Hyde and Roybal introduced the evening's emcee, comedian Kate Clinton, a group of trans activists and allies, led by Bamby Salcedo, stormed the stage with dozens of handmade signs as the chant "Jessie Presente!" filled the ballroom. Shortly after the demonstration, an activist told The Advocate that Creating Change organizers were not told about the action, in case the trans activists would not be allowed into the ballroom of the Sheraton in downtown Denver. Not only did Salcedo demand better accountability on the part of police and the criminal justice system, she also called for LGBTQ organizations to include transgender people on their boards and staffs as decision makers. "If you serve us, you need to include us," Salcedo said to a crowd cheering and raising their fists in solidarity.
After the stage was cleared, Roybal announced that Hancock would not be making his speech. Learn more about the Hernandez shooting at this Feministing post. Follow Creating Change on Twitter at this hashtag.

Staples To Merge With Office Depot

Via the New York Times:
In planning a $6.3 billion merger, Staples and Office Depot are betting that 18 years was long enough for government regulators to change their minds about how consumers buy office supplies. The deal, announced on Wednesday, is expected to be closely evaluated by antitrust authorities, given that it will shrink the world of office supply retail specialists to a single chain. A previous attempt to unite the two in 1997 was blocked by the Federal Trade Commission. But the two retailers will argue that since then, the business of selling office supplies has become significantly more competitive. Customers can choose from a variety of sources, including giants like Walmart, Target and Amazon. It is this rise of alternatives that helped propel the latest merger talks in the first place.
Office Depot bought Office Max just two years ago. In a press release posted on their website, Staples headlines the deal as an acquisition, not a merger.

Perkins Attacks Obama Over Comments Made At National Prayer Breakfast

Last night Perkins sent this press release:
In a speech that I can only describe as surreal, the President went on to liken Christians to the monsters behind ISIS and American racism. "And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ." First of all, the crusades were almost a thousand years ago. ISIS is killing today. What's more, every true follower of Christ condemns the acts of barbarism committed under the mask of religion -- in medieval or American history. The teachings of Christianity do not call for, nor do they condone, brutality or bigotry. Can the same be said of Islam? Are Muslims around the world denouncing the ruthless and inhumane actions of ISIS?
And then he rushed to Fox News.

Radio Shack Calls It Quits

Radio Shack is filing for bankruptcy but the brand won't disappear entirely. Via Bloomberg:
In the agreement, the Radio Shack brand would continue as a store-within-a-store concept at locations acquired by Sprint, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. The retailer now expects to sell 1,500 to 2,400 stores to Sprint and Standard General LP, its biggest shareholder, according to the person. The rest of the locations would be closed, the person said. Merianne Roth, a spokeswoman for Fort Worth, Texas-based Radio Shack, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The Radio Shack talks had been expected to lead to a filing as soon as Wednesday night, though the complexity of the negotiations have delayed the move, another person familiar with the discussions said.
Radio Shack currently operates 5500 locations.

ALABAMA: Haters To Hold Anti-Gay Rally At State Capitol Building On Saturday

From the press release:
Join Alabamians from across the state with your family, friends and signs at the State Capitol this Saturday morning, February 7, from 10:00 to 11:00 am CST. We will stand with our leaders and the laws of the State of Alabama for the sanctity of marriage as defined by God – union between a man and a woman. "In the beginning, God made them male and female. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." (Mark 10:7-9) We can plead for God’s mercy on Alabama. We can speak up for what is right. We can uphold God’s Word. We can love homosexual Alabamians enough to tell them the truth. And, this Saturday we can rally together on the steps of the Capitol with families from across Alabama to publically stand for God’s definition of marriage, confess that “Jesus Christ is Lord”, encourage our leaders and proclaim a message of truth and hope in Alabama. Colonel John Eidsmoe, Senior Counsel for the Foundation of Moral Law will be speaking. We hope for media coverage.
Some history on John Eidsmoe: In October 2014 he filed a SCOTUS brief on behalf of an Alabama woman seeking to block her son-in-law from inheriting his dead husband's estate. In 2011 Eidsmoe called for Congress to have "ex-gay" torture provided to the US military. That same year he declared that gay service members will molest children. He has also said that all women must submit to their husbands and that the United States must impose biblical laws and punishments or else the nation is doomed. Eidsmoe, not incidentally, was Michele Bachmann's professor at Oral Roberts University. It will be interesting to see if Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore shows up at the rally.

NOTE: If any JMG readers in Montgomery attend this event, please send us your photos and video.

AP: 57% Say Wedding-Related Busineses Should Be Allowed To Refuse Gays

From the Associated Press:
While finding that Americans narrowly favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally marry, a new Associated Press-GfK poll also shows most believe wedding-related businesses should be allowed to deny service to same-sex couples for religious reasons. Roughly half the country also thinks local officials and judges with religious objections ought to be exempt from any requirement that they issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, according to the poll. That view of the same-sex marriage issue echoes that of the Mormon church. Last week, the church called on state legislatures to pass new laws that protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination but also to protect the rights of those who assert their religious beliefs. David Kenney, a self-employed Catholic from Novi, Michigan, said he's fine with same-sex marriage being legal. He's among the 57 percent of Americans who said wedding-related businesses — such as florists — should be allowed to refuse service if they have an objection rooted in their religion.
In the same poll, 50% say state officials should be allowed to refuse to issue marriage licenses on the basis of religious beliefs. The poll has already been triumphantly posted to NOM's blog.

TRAILER: Poltergeist

I09 weighs in:
Here it is, the first-ever trailer for the rebooted horror classic Poltergeist. And, um, it looks pretty good. There's a lot of original movie recreation and new spin, but this trailer (for the most part) is scary and has charm. That being said, this trailer is cut together fast and relies heavily on jump scares. That ALSO being said, you can see a lot of touchstones here that we're enjoying that also imply non-jump scare freak outs. For example in foreign trailer (below) we see Sam Rockwell hacking up worms and blood into the sink, which is clearly an homage to the face-ripping off scene from the original.
In this version the Tangina character immortalized by late LGBT advocate Zelda Rubenstein is played by a man. I wonder if the new kids were told about the Poltergeist curse.

ALABAMA: State Preps Marriage Forms

Via AL.com:
Alabama's attorney general is still holding out hope that the U.S. Supreme Court will block gay marriages in the state, but the Department of Public Health is prepared. The department today will send new marriage forms to probate judges in 67 counties. Instead of listing "bride" and "groom," the new forms include "first listed spouse" and "second listed spouse." Catherine Donald, the state registrar and director of the Center for Health Statistics, said there are a few other minor changes that have made the marriage certificate slightly longer. For instance, it now asks for the gender of each spouse, which will allow the state to track how many marriage licenses are issued to gay couples.
Tick tock, SCOTUS.

GOP Leaders Appear In Janet Porter Documentary: Gays Want The Total Criminalization Of Christianity

Kyle Mantyla writes at Right Wing Watch:
Today, Faith 2 Action's Janet Porter sent out an email to activists excitedly announcing that she is finishing up editing a new anti-gay documentary that she intends to release at the National Religious Broadcaster's Convention in Nashville at the end of this month. Among the participants are Rep. Steve King, Rep. Trent Franks, Rep. Louie Gohmert, Rep. Tim Huelskamp, Sen. Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, David Barton, James Dobson, Mat Staver, Phyllis Schlafly, Scott Lively, Alveda King, Brian Camenker, Frank Pavone, Robert Knight, John Stemberger, and, of course, Porter herself, who can been seen walking around in the woods with a lantern, warning that gay activists are seeking to turn Christians into criminals.
You'll see another familiar face in the trailer. Hit this RWW post for a roundup of many insane claims made by Janet Porter.

John Boehner: House GOP Will Stay Out Of SCOTUS Same-Sex Marriage Cases

Chris Johnson reports at Washington Blade:
U.S. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Thursday declined to offer his hopes for litigation seeking marriage rights for same-sex couples before the U.S. Supreme Court, but said he doesn’t expect House Republicans will weigh in a legal capacity. “I don’t expect that we’re going to weigh in on this,” Boehner said. “The court will make its decision and that’s why they’re there, to be the highest court in the land.” Boehner, an opponent of same-sex marriage, made the remarks in response to a question from the Washington Blade at his weekly news conference the month after the Supreme Court agreed to hear the lawsuits, which includes a lawsuit challenging the state law in Boehner’s own state of Ohio.
That's quite a change from 2013 when the House GOP filed a SCOTUS brief against the overturn of DOMA. Now we wait to see if Boehner withers under pressure.

Sam Smith Video Features Gay Wedding Filmed At Anglican Church In London

Via Rolling Stone:
Grammy nominee and Rolling Stone cover star Sam Smith unveiled the video for his new single "Lay Me Down," the latest track off his platinum-selling debut album In the Lonely Hour. The video, filmed at the parish church of St. Margaret, Lee outside London and directed by Ryan Hope, finds Smith performing his ballad in front of what appears to be a mournful funeral but turns out to be a joyous gay marriage, a controversial situation given the United Kingdom's (and The Church's) stand on same-sex marriages. Rolling Stone was on set with Smith as the singer talked about the message behind the video. "Obviously gay marriage isn't legal in churches, and we're doing a gay marriage today, in the church. We're the first ever to do it. It's obviously not a real marriage, but still," Smith tells Rolling Stone from the set. "The priest just said to us, 'We're going against the rules by doing this today,' which I thought was a lovely element in the video.
Smith writes at his YouTube channel:
This song holds a very dear place in my heart. With this video myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in. This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country. I hope you enjoy it. I love you all, x.
Lovely track, gorgeous clip. I think Rolling Stone might be wrong, it seems like the wedding part is a flashback to before the funeral. UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter is wondering too.

Matt Moore: Christians Don't Hate Gays, Real Hate Is Throwing You Off A Roof

"Intolerance. Hatred. Bigotry. Oppression. Violation of human rights. Religious extremism. Evil. These are words that I see used by Americans, both gay and straight, to describe the Church’s stance on sexuality, everyday. These are words that I see fill my email inbox describing my character because of my biblical stance on sexuality, everyday. These are words that I see the Western LGBT community hang like a banner over all things associated with the person and teaching of Jesus Christ, every day. Disagree with us if you wish – that’s your prerogative. We’re not going to throw you off a roof for it. But please, stop thinking that we hate you. Step back and look at the world and re-evaluate your definitions of love and hate. What ISIS is doing is what real hatred looks like. We love you, and we want you to know the true God and His Son, Jesus Christ. We will still be your friends if you refuse. We will still love you and serve you and walk through life with you if you keep plugging your ears when we talk about Jesus. Because, at the end of the day, we don’t hate you." - Matt Moore, writing for Matt Barber's BarbWire.

PREVIOUSLY ON JMG: In August 2014 Moore claimed to have no idea that BarbWire columnists have called for imprisoning and executing gay Americans. In June 2014 Moore declared that transgender kids are possessed by demons. In February 2013 Moore was spotted on Grindr in New Orleans at the same time he was writing vicious "ex-gay" screeds for the Christian Post. After being confronted, Moore confessed that it was a "major disobedience to Christ" to have been cruising for huge uncut cocks on Grindr. He then declared that he had sold his computer and "put a lock on my phone" so that he wouldn't succumb to the delicious temptations of huge uncut cocks. The following week he posted a now-deleted YouTube video in which he declared that he rejects the term "ex-gay" because he's just as attracted to huge uncut cocks as when he found Jesus.

Sarah Palin To Headline CPAC 2015

Sarah Palin yesterday confirmed her headlining appearance at CPAC 2015 despite not-quiet grumbling from the far right after her bizarre, rambling speech at last month's GOP 2016 Clown Car Revue in Iowa. Also on board for this year's CPAC are Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Rick Santorum, Ben Carson, Sean Hannity, Scott Walker, Rand Paul, Rick Perry, Laura Ingraham, and Brent Bozell, who infamously called President Obama a "skinny ghetto crackhead" during an appearance on Fox News. CPAC launched in 1973. Ronald Reagan delivered 12 speeches at CPAC, including after he left the White House.

BRITAIN: Parliament OK's Lab Procedure For Creation Of Three-Parent Babies

Via BBC News:
MPs have voted in favour of the creation of babies with DNA from two women and one man, in a historic move. The UK is now set to become the first country to introduce laws to allow the creation of babies from three people. In a free vote in the Commons, 382 MPs were in favour and 128 against the technique that stops genetic diseases being passed from mother to child. During the debate, ministers said the technique was "light at the end of a dark tunnel" for families. A further vote is required in the House of Lords. It everything goes ahead then the first such baby could be born next year. Proponents said the backing was "good news for progressive medicine" but critics say they will continue to fight against the technique that they say raises too many ethical and safety concerns.
The Telegraph is very unhappy:
If people can pick and choose key characteristics of their children, what will this mean? It’s likely that we’ll see a sharp fall in the disabled – a troubling prospect as it suggests they are somehow less worthy. And will people also seek to control skin colour, eye colour, hair colour, or even something as uneasily defined as sexual orientation? Do we really want to live in a society of designer babies? Aside from the prospect being horrifically dystopian, it also risks reducing natural variation in the human race – which is critical to its adaptation and survival. If fashion dictates that certain characteristics should be eliminated, that could negatively affect future generations.
We'll probably get blamed for this.

Concernstipated Women: Disney's Frozen Is Totally A Threat To "Real Masculinity"

Via the Daily Beast:
‘Fox & Friends’ claims that Frozen empowers women by saying all men are fools and villains, and is therefore bad for society and harmful to little boys. For the love of god. There was a segment by the fearless thought leaders on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning, impressively delivered by all with a straight face, that claimed that the success of hit Disney animated film Frozen, a film about the love between sisters and a snowman who loves the beach, is a dire threat to masculinity as we know it. Yo, I get it. I’m a man. And as a man I know there’s nothing more manly than being afraid of a Disney Princess. In a timely segment airing 14 months after Frozen hit theaters, Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy wonders whether a film like Frozen is problematic, as it is “empowering girls but turning our men into fools and villains?”

ALABAMA: Governor Tells SCOTUS That Gay Marriages Will "Invite Chaos"

Last night Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley filed a SCOTUS brief in support of Attorney General Luther Strange's demand for a stay extension pending their June ruling. According to Bentley, allowing marriages to commence next week would "invite chaos" should SCOTUS ultimately rule against same-sex marriage. Read the brief at Equality Case Files. Also last night, the winning plaintiffs in Alabama's two marriage equality cases filed SCOTUS briefs against extending the stay. Their briefs are here and here. The stay on Alabama marriage is due to expire on Monday.

Researchers Unveil Phone Dongle That Tests For HIV & Syphilis In 15 Minutes

Via Science Daily:
A team of researchers, led by Samuel K. Sia, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia Engineering, has developed a low-cost smartphone accessory that can perform a point-of-care test that simultaneously detects three infectious disease markers from a finger prick of blood in just 15 minutes. The device replicates, for the first time, all mechanical, optical, and electronic functions of a lab-based blood test. Specifically, it performs an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) without requiring any stored energy: all necessary power is drawn from the smartphone. It performs a triplexed immunoassay not currently available in a single test format: HIV antibody, treponemal-specific antibody for syphilis, and non-treponemal antibody for active syphilis infection.
The device is estimated to have a production cost of $34, versus the $18K machine typically used to perform ELISA tests. Field testing was completed in Rwanda and funding was provided by the Gates Foundation, among others. (Tipped by JMG reader Alan)

De Blasio Announces New Ferry Service

Via Gothamist:
The East River ferry, launched by de Blasio's predecessor, currently shuttles passengers to a limited number of stops in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan along the East River, for $4 a ticket on weekdays and $6 on weekends. The new ferry service will be cheaper—Blasio promised yesterday that "new ferry rides will be priced the same as a MetroCard fare." The service will be operated by private companies receiving government subsidies. De Blasio said he plans to allocate an initial $55 million in capital investment for the first five routes (excluding the Stapleton/Coney Island routes), and anticipates an annual city subsidy between $10-$20 million to keep the whole thing afloat. If completed as envisioned, the expansion would likely be the largest municipal ferry service in the United States, in terms of passenger use.
According to a city study, there was an 8% increase in property values for locations within walking distance of the East River ferry stops created by Bloomberg, yielding $24M in new annual tax revenue for the city. Annual ridership for New York City's private ferry companies currently stands at about 10 million. The Staten Island Ferry, which is run by the city, has an annual ridership of 27 million.

SAN FRANCISCO: Archbishop Decrees That Catholic Staffers Must Not Masturbate

Via the SF Gate:
The conservative Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco has developed a new document for Catholic high school faculty and staff clarifying that sex outside of marriage, homosexual relations, the viewing of pornography and masturbation are “gravely evil.” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone’s document applies to faculty and staff at four Catholic high schools: Riordan and Sacred Heart in San Francisco, Marin Catholic in Kentfield and Serra High School in San Mateo. It states that administrators, faculty and staff “affirm and believe” the controversial statements, which will be part of the faculty handbook. The document goes on to say that marriage is between “one man and one woman,” despite California law allowing same-sex marriages. It also notes that sperm donation, the use of a surrogate and other forms of “artificial reproductive technology” are also gravely evil.
Cordileone, who was arrested for drunk driving in 2012, is considered by some to be the "father" of Proposition 8. Last year he led NOM's hate march against same-sex marriage.

UPDATE: Students have launched a petition against the new "morality" edicts.
We call on the Archbishop to cease his efforts to institute outdated and discriminatory “morality clauses,” to retain workplace protections and to allow Catholic school teachers to focus on the work they are doing to educate thousands of Bay Area children. The proposed changes directly contradict the Pope’s teachings, the Catholic values of inclusion and diversity, and the free and open exchange of ideas, which is the hallmark of a good education. They create a culture of fear that denies staff the right to follow their own individual consciences and harms students. As people of faith who value education, equality and freedom of conscience, we ask the Archbishop to remove this language immediately.

NEW ZEALAND: Auckland Bank Creates "GAYTMs" To Celebrate Pride Month

Via Stuff New Zealand:
Sedate inner-city banking has been transformed with ANZ unveiling four fabulous "GAYTMs" in Auckland and Wellington to celebrate diversity and inclusion for New Zealand's rainbow community. Dripping with rhinestones, the customised cash machines were accompanied today by ANZ staff dressed as their drag queen alter-egos, a colourful scene that stopped passersby in their tracks. "I think it's awesome," said one woman as she photographed the sparkling spectacle in Wellington's Willis St today. The art installations celebrated the bank's partnership with Auckland's Pride Festival, which would run throughout this month, and Wellington's Out In The Park on February 14, and marked its accreditation into the Rainbow Tick programme. The machines welcomed customers with rainbow-friendly messages on their screens and printed "out and proud" on receipts.
The concept first appeared in Sydney last year.

Tony Perkins On The Ark Encounter

"At a new Kentucky theme park, Christians are the ones getting taken for a ride. Construction is already underway in Williamstown for a one-of-a-kind tourist attraction by our friends at Answers in Genesis (AiG). The organization behind the Creation Museum is working on a built-to-scale Ark Encounter -- but so far, all they've encountered is intolerance. The state had given AiG the thumbs up on its application last fall, which triggered some outcry from anti-faith groups. Almost immediately, they swooped into Kentucky and started making noise about the rebate, demanding that it be retracted. Why? Because AiG dares to hire people who share their beliefs on creation. And as a religious organization, that's entirely within both state and federal law. Do we force animal rights groups to hire hunters? No. Or Muslim groceries to hire pig farmers? Of course not. So why is Ham's group being targeted? Constitutional questions aside, with as many as 700,000 people expected at the Ark each year, the benefits for Kentucky far outweigh any perceived slights in hiring policy." - Hate group leader Tony Perkins, via email.
