New Jersey Marriage Bill Advances

After hours and hours of some of the most repulsively anti-gay testimony ever to spew from my speakers, New Jersey's marriage equality bill advanced out of committee by a vote of 5-2.

The legislation still faces votes in both houses of the Legislature, with the Senate vote set for Feb. 13. Republican Gov. Chris Christie has promised to veto the Marriage Equality and Religious Exemption Act if it reaches his desk. Proponents touted the bill’s protections for religious organizations and affiliated groups that refuse to conduct a same-sex marriage as part of free exercise of religion, but that doesn’t address core religious concerns, said Rabbi Moshe Bressler, an Orthodox Jew from Lakewood. Bressler said state sanction of something other than marriages of one man and one woman would be an “attack on marriage and an attack on the family. “If you vote against the bill, it’s a vote for God. Voting for the bill, that’s not creating an environment to prosper,” Bressler said.

Towleroad point out this quote from Gov. Chris Christie: "The polls that I’ve seen show that if this goes to the ballot, I lose. How much more magnanimous could I be?"

The New Hampshire House GOP has released their agenda for the rest of the year and guess what is missing?

Republican House Leader Rep. D.J. Bettencourt of Salem said Thursday the House was focusing on economic and education reforms that would bring job creators to New Hampshire and put citizens back to work. Hot-button social issues like gun rights, immigration and labor reform were all absent from the agenda, but the biggest hole was left by gay marriage, which is the target of several bills aiming to repeal it. Republicans also said in 2011 they were putting off social issues to focus on strengthening the state's economic footing.

This isn't a dead deal for sure, but I'm betting the governor's vow to veto did it in. Story developing...

The Southern Poverty Law Center is suing the federal government on behalf of a disabled lesbian veteran and her partner.

Tracey Cooper-Harris served her country for 12 years in the U.S. Army. She received more than two dozen medals and commendations. She was honorably discharged in 2003. In 2010, Cooper-Harris was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disabling disease that attacks the brain and central nervous system. The Department of Veterans Affairs denied Cooper-Harris’ request for benefits for her partner, even though their same-sex marriage was recognized by California. The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a lawsuit on behalf of Cooper-Harris and her partner, charging that the Department of Veterans Affairs discriminated against them by denying these benefits but granting them to spouses in heterosexual marriages. It also charges the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional because it bans federal agencies from recognizing such same-sex marriages, denying these couples benefits available to couples in heterosexual marriages

Did you see this day coming? Who would have thought we needed a federal statute to protect military chaplains—and other servicemen and women—who believe that marriage is between one man and one woman? But just months after the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, there is a full-on battle for marriage raging within our nation's armed forces. Last April, the Navy issued new "sensitivity training" guidelines that required Navy chaplains to perform same-sex marriages.

That never happened, of course, but as we've seen countless times, NOM has no problem issuing easily disproved lies when it comes to fundraising. NOM Exposed points out that the Navy actually said that chaplains could choose to perform any ceremony. Don't expect a retraction.

Today the NYC Council will consider a resolution endorsing the above-mentioned state bill that would allow religious services in NYC public schools despite a recent federal appeals court ruling which banned churches from renting or having free access to public schools. Last week the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the appeals court decision. At least 35 NYC Council members have cosponsored the resolution.

FLORIDA: State Senate Passes Bill To Allow Student Prayers In Public Schools

The Florida Senate has approved a bill that would allow students to pray in public schools as long as the prayers weren't organized by adults. Oh, right.

The “inspirational messages” proposal (SB 98), proposed by Orlando Democratic Sen. Gary Siplin and approved by a 31-8 vote, would allow school boards to adopt policies granting students the right to have prayers at any school assembly but school administrators, teachers, coaches or other personnel from scrutinizing or participating in the prayers. A handful of Democrats argued against the bill, saying students already have the opportunity to pray privately objecting that the measure could create divisiveness. “We don’t have an issue in the state of Florida with the lack of ability of public school students to pray openly. What we want to do is keep our public school kids with the one inspirational message they all need: study, study, study. When they come to the school they can park their religious beliefs at home,” said Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Delray Beach, who is Catholic.

One legislator warns that the bill will backfire once a "smart-alecky" kid organizes a student prayer from the Koran.

UPDATE: Under the leadership of openly gay Sen. Ed Murray and with the critical support of several Republican Senators, the bill has passed after failed attempts to attach nasty amendments. One of the failed GOP amendments would have made it legal for any business to discriminate against gay couples. Another would have immediately placed the issue on the November ballot. That will likely happen anyway via a public petition drive, but the Democrats swatted it down. Onward to the Washington House, where passage is guaranteed.

"Amazon is joining other Pacific Northwest companies, including Microsoft, Starbucks and Nike, in support of Washington state's marriage equality bills," Amazon said in a statement released by spokeswoman Mary Osako. "The spirit of these bills is consistent with our longstanding employment practices." Gay marriage supporters believe they have enough votes to pass the measure out of both houses, and Gov. ACLU Sues Feds Over Drone Attacks

The ACLU is suing the Obama administration to force the release of information regarding drone attacks that some argue have resulted in the defacto executions of American citizens without trial. The Justice Department contends that any American who joins a foreign terrorist organization has become an enemy combatant and therefore has surrendered rights as a U.S. citizen.

Wednesday’s ACLU complaint referred to wide media coverage of the administration’s 2010 decision to place Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen allegedly allied with Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, on “kill lists” compiled by the CIA and the military’s Joint Special Operations Command. Awlaki was killed in September in Yemen by a joint CIA-JSOC drone operation that similarly received wide publicity. Samir Khan, also a U.S. citizen, was reported killed in the same attack. Awlaki’s 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, was reportedly killed in a JSOC drone strike two weeks later. At the time, public statements by Obama confirmed the elder Awlaki’s death. News reports indicated that the operation had been carried out after the administration requested and received an opinion from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel saying that targeting and killing U.S. citizens overseas was legal under domestic and international law.

The biggest problem for some progressives is the government's claimed right to secretly classify a person an enemy of the nation. Such decisions are cloaked for "national security" concerns.

Romney Glitter-Bombed In Minnesota

Early reports on Twitter say a "young man" was dragged away by security after "thoroughly" dousing Romney in glitter. I suspect this may be the same kid that glittered Crazy Eyes late last year. Soul Train Was My First Gay Bar

My family moved to Orlando in 1971 when I was eleven years old and that presented me with a horrifying dilemma. You see, American Bandstand and Soul Train played in that market at the same time. It was only a thirty-minute overlap, but oh how that 1:00pm to 1:30pm period tortured me. There were no VCRs (much less YouTube), so any television moment you missed was often gone forever. So I'd kneel before our mammoth 25" Admiral floor set and jerk the dial compulsively between channels 2 and 9, usually prompting my mother to scream from another room, "If you break that thing, you'll answer to your father!"

American Bandstand was the "safer" of the two shows, of course, what with Dick Clark's bland interviewing style and the safe-for-school moves of the dancers. But very early on I began to realize that there was something about many of the male dancers on Soul Train. There was an undefinable otherness to their look, their moves, their carriage. I became fascinated with a handful of them, watching for them each week, tracking what they wore, their ever-changing dance partners. Dance partners who, not incidentally, were often introduced as sisters or cousins on the occasions that Don Cornelius asked for names.

I was in my late twenties when it finally dawned on me that during those early years of my Soul Train viewing I'd been hearing the very first and faint pings of a gaydar that would rarely fail me once I recognized it for what it was. Today, of course, the fact that the Soul Train dance floor was heavily populated by gay men is almost hilariously obvious. Just keep your antenna up while clicking through those muddy YouTube video transfers or when tuning into the reruns on cable. So thanks for that, Don Cornelius. As always in parting, I wish you love, peace, and soul.

Cristie Apologizes For Marriage Remarks

Last week civil rights activists went ballistic when Gov. Chris Christie said that blacks "would have been happy" to have their rights voted on and therefore so should gay people. Yesterday, he (sort of) apologized.

"I also recognize that my job, one of my jobs as Governor, is to clearly communicate to people what I’m thinking, every time I open my mouth. And I try to be very good about being very direct about what I say so that there’s no ambiguity but obviously when I was talking last week at the town hall meeting about the civil rights movement in the South, I wasn’t clear enough. I just wasn’t. And what I did was, by saying those things, I left them open to misinterpretation and obviously there are some folks out there whose feelings I hurt or sensibilities I offended. And I apologize for that, because that’s my job. My job is to clearly communicate all the time. And so to those folks out there who were somehow offended or concerned about the ambiguity in my statement, I apologize for that because very clearly what I was trying to say, I said yesterday at the press conference about 5 or 6 times."

Facebook's IPO May Come Today

The online social network Facebook was to file for a $5 billion public stock offering with U.S. securities regulators Wednesday, several news outlets reported. The filing -- half the $10 billion most analysts earlier estimated -- is a starting point Facebook has said could ultimately value the company at $75 billion to $100 billion. That valuation would be one of the largest initial public offerings in U.S. history, CNBC reported.

CNN reports that Facebook's market valuation will likely exceed that of Disney or General Motors.

Christie for saying he will follow through on his campaign promise to veto same-sex marriage. This week, we have urgent and terrible news to report—Gov. Chris Christie's nominee to the New Jersey Supreme Court is not only an outspoken advocate for gay marriage, he has extreme and hateful views equating traditional Christian views on sex and marriage with slavery. This kind of intemperate and extreme view should be totally unacceptable in a GOP judicial nominee.

Governor Christie says that Harris has promised to recuse himself when the same-sex marriage comes before the court, but even this unenforceable promise misses the bigger issue: a man who cannot tell the difference between supporting our traditional understanding of marriage and wanting to enslave a people lacks common sense and judicial temperament. An appeals court on Tuesday upheld the state's campaign disclosure law that requires a national anti-gay-marriage group to release its donor list, but the group plans to take the fight to shield the list to the U.S. Supreme Court. The decision pertains to ballot question committees in Maine and represents a second defeat for the National Organization for Marriage, which previously lost a challenge to the state's political action committee laws and laws governing independent expenditures and advertising attribution and disclaimers. The latest appeal focused on part of the law that says groups that raise or spend more than $5,000 to influence elections must register and disclose their donors.

Anti-Gay Hate Group Pushes Bill To Force Religious Services In NYC Public Schools

In a move some are calling an "end-run around the separation of church and state," the anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund has authored a bill that would force New York City public schools to allow religious services on their premises. Sock-puppeting for the ADF is GOP Sen. Martin Golden.

Legislation pending in the Senate and Assembly would overturn the city’s policy banning churches and other religious groups from using school buildings for worship services and would allow them whenever they’re “deemed not disruptive of normal school operations.” “It is an end around,” City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott told the Daily News yesterday. Walcott also raised alarms about the Alliance Defense Fund, an Arizona-based religious organization that fought unsuccessfully in court to overturn the city’s ban and has worked with lawmakers on the legislation.

The ADF, according to its website, opposes legalized abortion and has fought against the spread of gay marriage and what it deemed the “homosexual agenda.” Walcott said the group’s history is “not what we're about as far as equal rights and equal opportunity.” Sen. Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn), a sponsor of the bill, defended the legislation and downplayed the ADF’s role, saying they were one of many groups that had pushed for its passage. Golden conceded, though, that a lawyer for the group did help his staff craft portions of the bill. The legislation could be approved as early as next week, he added.

As I reported here two week ago, also in this fight is the Family Research Council, who says that New York City is oppressing religious liberty by adhering to a recent federal appeals court ruling that bans churches from renting or having free access to public school property. That decision was refused review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Sontag’s contention that “Camp is esoteric—something of a private code, a badge of identity even, among small urban cliques” suggests one culprit for the death of camp: The mainstream acceptance of gays—a welcome development, to say the least—seems to have come with an ancillary cost. If camp is by definition a sort of in-joke, a winking language of signs and semaphores understood by a discerning few, it melts away when a show about battling Broadway ingenues is targeted at the many. The aesthetic sensibility that converted TV’s Batman into a gay icon and “No wire hangers!” into a rallying cry has crossed irrevocably into mainstream culture. It’s available to all and therefore drained of its power. It’s an tasty irony, but not a campy one.

As part of a campaign to reduce HIV infections in Africa, groups such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are advocating the use of the above "simpler" circumcision method. The new procedure is intended to speed the rate of circumcisions in regions that have few doctors.

Circumcision is believe to protect heterosexual men because the foreskin has many Langerhans cells, which pick up viruses and “present” them to the immune system — which H.I.V. attacks. From the initial safety studies done so far, PrePex is clearly faster, less painful and more bloodless than any of its current rivals. And it relies on the simplest and least-threatening technology — a rubber band. The band compresses the foreskin against a plastic ring slipped inside it; the foreskin dies within hours for lack of blood and, after a week, falls off or can be clipped off “like a fingernail,” said Tzameret Fuerst, the company’s chief executive officer, who compared the process to the stump of an umbilical cord’s shriveling up and dropping off a few days after it is clamped. It is done with topical anesthetic cream, and there is usually no bleeding. And PrePex can be put in place and removed by nurses with about three days’ training.

Three separate studies have shown that circumcision can reduce HIV infection from vaginal sex by up to 60%. Another study was cut short when it became clear that circumcising men that are already infected provided no protection to women. In 2009 the CDC announced that it was considering recommending that American boys be circumcised at birth, but that policy was never formalized. No study has yet confirmed that circumcision provides any protection for gay men.
