New Best Buy Wedding Registry Ad

JMG reader Brian tips us that the above ad is appearing on Facebook today. In 2010 Best Buy and Target drew the ire of LGBT activists for donating to anti-gay GOP Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who ended up losing to current Gov. Mark Dayton by merely 0.4% of the vote.

Best Buy Co-Opts OWS

Anybody with a Facebook account knows how "occupy" has become a pervasive meme applicable to just about any situation. But this may be the first such usage in a national advertising campaign. And just yesterday I was snickering at a press release touting a porn movie titled Occupy My Throat.

BREAKING: Target Apologizes For Funding Minnesota Anti-Gay Political Group

Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel has bowed to national outrage and issued an apology (just to his employees, so far) for funding an anti-gay Minnesota PAC to the tune of $150,000. Steinhafel's letter says the company "will more closely scrutinize" political donations in the future. Minnesota Forward, the recipient of Target's dough, funneled the money to anti-gay candidate for governor, Tom Emmer. Is this enough to call off the LGBT dogs? We shall see. And no word yet from Best Buy, who made a similar donation.

Matt Morris Goes To Best Buy

Openly gay pop singer Matt Morris took his video camera to Best Buy to record their company-wide promotion of his new album, only to later learn that like Target, they too had contributed a ton of money to anti-gay candidate for governor of Minnesota, Tom Emmer. Morris then edited this clip to include a plea for his fans to bring HRC's petition to Best Buy. (Oh, but buy the album too.)

Thou Shall Not Diss Apple

Remember the iPhone 4 Vs. HTC Evo video? Best Buy wants to fire the kid that made it. Even though it never mentions where he works.
A Best Buy employee has been suspended and may be fired after he created a satirical video and posted it on YouTube. Brian Maupin of Kansas City, Missouri, created the cartoon video about the iPhone 4 versus the HTC EVO phone. The video portrays an electronics store employee trying to convince a customer wanting an iPhone 4 to purchase an HTC EVO 4G phone instead. The video became so popular, more than 1. 3 million views on YouTube as of Thursday, that someone at Best Buy saw it. While most people find the video funny, Best Buy corporate did not. When they realized the creator worked for them, they asked him to take the video down. When Maupin refused to take the video down because it didn't mention Best Buy, he was suspended.
Gadgets site Gizmodo has offered the kid a job.

Daily Grumble

In full realization of how very cliched this post is, I must nevertheless denounce the Sales Prevention Team at the Best Buy on East 86th Street for the most aggravating purchase experience I've ever had. I can totally say without hyperbole that that place is a million times worse than Hitler. As I was told, because of "the shrink", one can only buy computer-related items at the single computer department register, where they hold your purchase hostage while the exasperated 17 year old clerk deals with a long line of argumentative idiots who have clearly never bought an item that requires electricity. I walked in knowing what I wanted, where it was, that it was in stock, and yet there I stood for 63 minutes. I would have left but I was hypnotized by the statuesque woman in the floor-length mink barking out insults at her follow customers. "Rebates come in the mail, dumbshit, not from the girl!" "You don't BUY a virus, moron!" "She already told you twice about the warranty, you deaf fuck." Seriously, if I only had my camera, she'd be a YouTube hero. Her rant at the woman who was worried that her new laptop wouldn't have enough memory to hold the internet? Viral city. Anyway, you may commence ridiculing me for shopping at Best Buy. I knew better, but I rolled the dice because it's close.
