Fox Debate Breaks Viewership Record
CNN reports:
Early overnight Nielsen ratings suggest that Thursday's Republican debate was not just the most-watched primary debate in history -- it may have been twice as big as the previous record-holder. The debate on Fox News had a 16.0 household rating between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., according to Nielsen. Translation: 16% of United States homes with TV sets tuned in. Fox News usually has 1% or 2% of the household audience. For the sake of comparison, the highest-rated Republican primary debates in 2011 and 2012 were watched by approximately 5% of households.Last night may have been the most-watched Fox News telecast ever.

Frank Bruni: Hooray For Fox News
"This wasn’t a debate, at least not like most of those I’ve seen. This was an inquisition. On Thursday night in Cleveland, the Fox News moderators did what only Fox News moderators could have done, because the representatives of any other network would have been accused of pro-Democratic partisanship. They took each of the 10 Republicans onstage to task. They held each of them to account. They made each address the most prominent blemishes on his record, the most profound apprehensions that voters feel about him, the greatest vulnerability that he has. It was riveting. It was admirable. It compels me to write a cluster of words I never imagined writing: hooray for Fox News." - Frank Bruni, writing for the New York Times. (Read the full piece.)

Who Will Make The First GOP Debate?
The Hill breaks it down:
Based on five polls used by RealClearPolitics (RCP), eight candidates look like locks to make the stage, while the race for the final two slots is headed for a controversial photo finish. For the candidates currently ranked between ninth place and 14th place, the polling differential is negligible. “It’s a roll of the dice,” said Monmouth University polling director Patrick Murray. “It’s going to come down to the vagaries of how independent pollsters round off their results — we’re talking tenths of decimal points. It could come down to the five or six people who didn’t pick up their phones for a national survey and the five or six people who did.”According to the above-linked analysis, missing the first debate could prove fatal. Therefore in two weeks we may see the ends of Graham, Fiorina, Kasich, Perry, Santorum, or Jindal. Or not.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, businesswoman Carly Fiorina, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal are separated by only 1.5 percentage points, according to the RCP national average at the end of last week. Christie looks to be in the best shape of the bunch, sitting in 9th place with 2.8 percent support. Perry and Kasich are tied for 10th with 1.8 percent support, followed by Fiorina and Santorum at 1.4 percent, and Jindal at 1.2. (By contrast, the lowest of the top eight, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), has 5.4 percent support; the highest, Donald Trump, has 18.2 percent.)

Will Ted Cruz Be In The First Debate?
Ted Cruz appears to be worried that he won't qualify for the first presidential debate. Per the rules announced by Fox News, only the ten highest-polling candidates will be invited.
In a memo sent to fellow GOP campaigns on Wednesday, Chris Wilson, who serves as director of research and analytics for the Cruz campaign, called Fox News’ standards for deciding which national polls are used in its debate entry process “unclear.” Wilson asks the other campaigns to “consider joining with us” in encouraging the network to impose additional polling standards. As it stands, Fox News is allowing the Top 10 contenders, based on an average of the five most recent national polls, into the Aug. 6 debate. “I’m sure you are aware, the standards set by Fox News for the first GOP Presidential debate are unclear and, it would appear, undefined,” Wilson writes in the memo. Among the Cruz campaign’s suggestions: That polls included in the national average must have at least 1,000 interviews with primary voters and must be done by telephone (not online). However, no telephone poll conducted this year has surveyed that many GOP primary voters. The vice president of Fox isn't happy with Cruz: "I can’t wait until Senator Cruz is President, so he can tell all the networks how to run their business." Fox Panel Immigration Meltdown
Via Mediaite:
A Fox News debate on immigration got pretty personal and ugly today, devolving into a shouting match over who’s “exploiting” the death of Kate Steinle more. Steinle’s death at the hands of an illegal immigrant in San Francisco has been a watershed moment for conservatives who want to crack down more on illegal immigrants, especially Donald Trump. As Fox’s The Five discussed Trump today, Jesse Watters credited Trump for his outspokenness and called President Obama a “skinny community organizer.” Geraldo Rivera scolded him for being “disrespectful” and things went downhill from there.

Todd Starnes Posts USA Tribute (With Music By Gay Communist Aaron Copland)
Presumably to celebrate the Fourth Of July, anti-gay activist Todd Starnes has posted a star-spangled Fox News tribute to the United States, recounting how preachers "prayed on bended knee, asking God to bless our land, to shed his grace on thee." Soundtracking the clip is Fanfare For The Common Man, which was composed by gay communist Aaron Copland. Bonus giggle: Copland was also an agnostic.

Todd Starnes: Confederate Flag Opponents Are Exactly Like Lenin, Stalin, And ISIS
"It's only a matter of time before the cultural revolutionaries destroy films like Gone with the Wind and Forrest Gump and burn copies of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Stalin and Lenin would be bursting with pride. You know who else has been doing some cultural cleansing? The Islamic State -- bulldozing their way through history -- turning Iraq's heritage into rubble. And mark my words - the left's cultural crusade will not stop with the Confederate Flag. They will use the perception of racism and hatred to whitewash history and silence dissent. And one day - very soon - I predict they will come after another flag -- the one with broad stripes and bright stars. So don't be terribly surprised when even Republicans stand idly by as they burn the Star-Spangled Banner. Run Forrest, Run." - Todd Starnes, writing for Fox News.

Fox News Dumps Sarah Palin
Politico reports:
Fox News will not renew its contract with Sarah Palin, whose bombastic appearances have been a cable staple since the former Alaska governor’s failed run on John McCain’s ticket in the 2008 presidential election cycle. When asked for comment, a Fox News spokesperson confirmed the network had amicably parted ways with the governor on June 1. Palin, 51, is expected to make occasional guest appearances on Fox and Fox Business, and will appear on other networks and cables. She has a show on the Sportsman Channel, does a lot of speeches, and will announce a new publishing project soon. When Palin was at her zenith, she made frequent appearances, and Fox installed a camera at her house. But executives consider her less relevant now, and her appearances were sometimes hampered by the vast time difference with Alaska. She remains a huge conservative force on Facebook, with 4.5 million fans – twice that of Rand Paul, who has the biggest reach in the 2016 field. She also has 1.15 million Twitter followers.(Tipped by JMG reader Arthur)
