Pedro Zamora Died 20 Years Ago Today

Pedro Zamora, the activist who put a face to AIDS for millions of young Americans via MTV's The Real World, died 20 years ago today of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, the previously (and once again) rare brain disease that took the lives of so many. Zamora's commitment ceremony with his boyfriend, Sean Sasser, was the first in television history. The couple first met at the 1993 March On Washington, which is where I also (briefly) met Zamora through my then-boss, who was on the board of the NAMES Project. Sasser died last year of mesothelioma. Pedro Zamora's time on the national stage was far too brief, but his impact on this country's perception of HIV and people living with AIDS remains.

Boy band groupies are going nuts about the possible reunion of NSYNC, which once included openly gay singer and radio host Lance Bass.

Just one day before the MTV Video Music awards, boy band 'N Sync has joined Twitter. Buzzing fans hope the perfectly timed first-and-only tweet is a sign of an imminent reunion.  "Mic check, mic check one.. two... is this thing on?!" the tweet from the @NSYNC account read. It had more than 7,300 retweets in less than three hours. A few hours later 'N Sync-er Lance Bass tweeted: "Yes, @NSYNC is the official twitter Happy weekend everyone!" 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, J.C. Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick broke up more than a decade ago, but all week rumors have been swirling about a possible reunion.

The VMAs air tonight from Brooklyn's Barclays Centers at 9pm. Expected performers include Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus, and Kanye West.

Activist Sean Sasser Dies At Age 44

According to a Facebook post made last night by his partner Michael Kaplan, activist Sean Sasser has died of mesothelioma at the age of 44.  Sasser was perhaps best known for his appearances in the 1994 season of MTV's Real World, during which he began dating late HIV/AIDS activist Pedro Zamora. Theirs was the first real life same-sex relationship seen by millions of young Americans. In 2009 MTV aired Pedro, a dramatization of Zamora's life co-written by Dustin Lance Black, in which Sasser was played by DaJuan Johnson.

We are a long distance away from a “health” lecture, but that’s exactly the category our media culture awards to the “sex advice columnist.” Savage publicists tout he has the number one “health podcast” at iTunes. Savage is not discussing “health.” He’s selling hedonism. At one point in the MTV show, Savage lectures a couple having “unprotected” sex that “Pregnancy is the ultimate sexually transmitted infection.” A child is a disease? How sick is that? He tells the female: “You can get birth control that’ll knock your eggs out for a year. You should. You must! Oh my God!” [snip] In addition to Norelco and Axe, this smut was also brought to you by Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Clearasil, Sobe Life Water, AT&T, Gazelle.com, Western Sky Financial, the makers of Xenadrine and Allegra, and naturally, the newest smutcom sequel in the “American Pie” series. They should all be so proud to be associated with this “educational” project. I wonder if the CEOs talk about this proudly at night in front of their infections – I mean, children.

Savage U Launches April 3rd

Dan Savage's MTV series, Savage U, will launch at 11pm on Tuesday, April 3rd.

"Savage U" will air twelve episodes, each focused on a particular campus and its culture. The schools include the University of Maryland, Ohio State University, East Carolina University, Auburn University, the University of Illinois Chicago, Cornell University, the University of Oregon, the University of Central Florida, Rhodes College, the University of California Irvine, Texas Tech University and Tulane University. The April 3 premiere episode takes place at the University of Maryland. Savage will be joined on his visits to college campuses by producer Lauren Hurchinson, who will offer a female perspective on sex and relationships and, according to MTV, "rein Dan in and keep him in check."

It Gets Better Lands MTV Special

MTV will air a star-studded hour-long special about It Gets Better. Among those slated to appear are Zachary Quinto and Adam Levine.

It just keeps getting better over at MTV and Logo — and for gay teens on TV. EW has exclusively learned that the sister cable networks are jointly prepping a special titled It Gets Better, which will chronicle the stories of three young people struggling with LGBT issues. The 60-minute special will premiere on both MTV and Logo on Feb. 21 at 11 p.m. Syndicated columnist Dan Savage — who in fall 2010 launched the buzzy It Gets Better Project, which led to an avalanche of more than 30,000 videos of encouragement for LGBT youth — will anchor the hour. The show will include appearances by actor Zachary Quinto, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, comedian Margaret Cho, Dancing with the Stars contestant Chaz Bono, and Jersey Shore star Vinny Guadagnino. Singers Sia and Jake Shears will also contribute video messages of hope and support.

It [MTV's Degrassi] has content that is very extraordinarily explicit towards transgender and homosexual lifestyles. It often has promotions on there that direct teens to organizations that will encourage them to embrace and accept the transgender or homosexual lifestyle, particularly TheTrevorHelpline.org -- a website that describes itself as 'a free and confidential service that's open for gay and questioning youth,' and claims to be 'saving lives' by encouraging confused kids to 'be proud of who you are.'" - David Caton, head of the Florida Family Association.

Emboldened by his success with All-American Muslim, Caton has renewed his call for advertisers to boycott Teen Nick's drama, Degrassi. Caton claims to have convinced Macy's and Target to withdraw from the program.

RELATED: Yesterday a hacker claiming to represent Anonymous temporarily took over the Florida Family Association's website and posted the emails and contribution amounts of some of their supporters. The hacker also claims to have downloaded the credit card numbers of the donors. The FFA has since regained control of their site. Public records show that David Caton is their only paid employee.

AFA's "One Million Moms" Vs Target

The American Family Association has handed off their campaign against Target to their new One Million Moms group. Last week the AFA denounced the retail giant for advertising alongside a Trevor Project PSA on LGBT suicide.

The Trevor Helpline promotion aired during the "Beat It" episode of Teen Nick's Degrassi series when teen Riley, the openly gay football captain and starting quarterback, declined reparative therapy for his homosexuality. Not only is Teen Nick now featuring a show that encourages the nation's youth to embrace alternate lifestyles, but the family retail chain Target Corporation is helping through sponsorship. Upon discovering that Target Corporation is one of the main advertisers during the shameful and inappropriate program Degrassi, OMM is disappointed and the retail chain needs to be held accountable. At least three Target advertisements appeared during each episode of Degrassi this past weekend. They are openly recruiting teens and children to become 'gay' on a program that also promotes the transgender and homosexual lifestyle.
