"Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus. I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it." - Michael Douglas, speaking to the Guardian about his recent bout with oral cancer.
HPV, the sexually transmitted virus best known as a cause of cervical and anal cancer and genital warts, is thought to be responsible for an increasing proportion of oral cancers. Some propose that changes in sexual behaviour – a rise in oral sex in particular – are responsible. Such changes might be cultural, but could also be linked to fears about the safety of penetrative sex in the wake of the discovery of AIDS. Mahesh Kumar, a consultant head and neck surgeon in London, confirms that the last decade has seen a dramatic rise in this form of cancer, particularly among younger sufferers. Recent studies of 1,316 patients with oral cancer found that 57% of them were HPV-16 positive.Kumar went on to dismiss Douglas' claim about the "best cure" for his cancer, although it seems to me that Douglas was likely joking. Douglas has been cancer-free for two years after rounds of radiation and chemotherapy.

"These two men were deeply in love and in a real relationship—a marriage—long before there was gay marriage. That’s not an insignificant thing. The script is beautiful and relatable. Their conversations when they’re dressing or undressing or having a spat or getting ready for bed? That’s every marriage. It feels like you’re witnessing something really intimate you would normally see with a man and a woman, but instead it’s two men, which was thrilling. There’s stuff I think will make people uncomfortable. Great. It’s HBO—they can change the channel. We both have a lot of gay friends, and we were not going to screw this up or bullshit it.

"I never thought I would get to kiss Michael Douglas. I kind of think of it in algebra terms, back to my high-school days. It's like the transitive property - by kissing Michael Douglas, I am making out with Catherine. I was actually kind of upset that I never got to kiss Catherine. But now I get to kiss Michael. I thought it would have been better if I could have at least kissed them both." - Matt Damon, on his kissing scenes with Michael Douglas in the upcoming Liberace bio-pic.Labels: Liberace, Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, movies
Matt Damon has signed to play Liberace's lover in the coming biopic starring Michael Douglas. It is quite a change for the Irish American macho star used to playing souped-up testosterone roles such as the cop in 'The Departed' and the Bourne Identity flicks. Douglas who will play the flamboyant Liberace is looking forward to having Damon as his gay partner. “I’m just going to get really comfortable so it’s not a caricature,” Michael said. “Matt Damon’s going to be my younger lover. God bless Matt. He’s right to take chances. It’s smart trying to mix it up a bit and maintain the franchise and get to do a picture that turns you on,” he said. The movie is slated for a 2012 release. Here's an imagining of how Michael Douglas might look in the role.

I don't know how I missed last week's news that director Steven Soderbergh is casting Michael Douglas to play Liberace in a biopic about the famously flamboyant Las Vegas showman.
Matt Damon is set to play Liberace's lover who sued him for palimony. Right up until his 1987 death from AIDS, Liberace denied his gayness. (The magazines were always depicting him as dating one starlet or another and a lot of people bought it somehow.)Labels: "celibacy", HIV/AIDS, Liberace, Michael Douglas, movies
