Wanda Sykes On Gay Domestic Violence

Via Indie Wire:
A regular feature on the HBO series "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," Wanda Sykes stepped behind the "special commentary" pulpit to deliver a tongue-in-cheek, biting critique of violence within the LGBTQ community - specifically, where professional athletes are concerned - as only the comedian can. It's what she refers to as "the gay perspective on sports headlines."

Quote Of The Day - Rush Limbaugh

"I know I am a target and I know I will be destroyed eventually. I fear that all I have accomplished and all the wealth I have accumulated will be taken from me, to the cheers of the crowd. I know I am hated and despised by the American Left." - Rush Limbaugh, from an email written the day after comedian Wanda Sykes blasted him during the White House Press Correspondents Dinner.

According to an upcoming book about Limbaugh, he regards homosexuality as "probably biologically determined" and has no objection to gays getting civil unioned, but considers same-sex marriage to be "culturally subversive."

Erykah Badu Fined, Fox News Calls For Boycott, Wanda Sykes Riffs On Clip

Erykah Badu was fined $500 for disorderly conduct for stripping nude at the site of JFK's assassination during the filming of a music video. Badu says she meant no disrespect.
Erykah Badu says her music video, "Window Seat," in which she stripped nude and feigned being shot at the site of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, has been "grossly misunderstood" and was not intended to insult the memory of the late president. "My point was grossly misunderstood all over America. JFK is one of my heroes, one of the nation's heroes," Badu said on The Wanda Sykes Show Saturday night. "John F Kennedy was a revolutionary; he was not afraid to butt heads with America, and I was not afraid to show America my butt-naked truth."
Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly is calling for a boycott of Badu's music.

Last night Wanda Sykes riffed on Badu's clip.

Constance McMillen On Wanda Sykes

Mississippi teen Constance McMillen appeared on the Wanda Skyes Show to talk about her canceled prom. (Wanda surprises Constance by asking to her to be the presenter of Wanda's upcoming GLAAD award.) There has been a huge national outpouring of support for Constance, with many offers of money and venues to host a gay friendly prom. The ACLU is suing to reinstate the official prom as an all-inclusive event, which IS the precedent we'd all like to see, as fantastic as all the counter-offers are.

Wanda Sykes Gets Fox Chat Show

Excellent news for fans of recently out comedian Wanda Sykes.
Fox is planning on launching a new Saturday late night show featuring Wanda Sykes, according to sources with knowledge of the network's plans. The show is said to be more in the mold of Bill Maher's HBO show than a typical talk show. It will air Saturdays at 11 and will be an hour long. The network is considering launching the show either this fall or in January, when the network has historically launched many projects so as to capitalize on the promotional power of the American Idol audience.
It's too bad that Skyes' success comes at the expense of the erratically funny MadTV, which she will replace.

Wanda Sykes To Host White House Correspondents' Dinner

In what may be a first for an openly gay person, Wanda Sykes will host this year's White House Correspondents' Dinner.
Wanda Sykes will soon get the chance to make fun of President Barack Obama to his face. The comic actress said Thursday that she has been selected as the entertainer at the annual White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner in Washington, slated for May 9. Obama is expected to attend the black-tie affair at the Washington Hilton and to follow in his predecessors' tradition by putting on a comedy act of his own. The guest list of some 2,000 people will likely include the usual mix of Washington elite, White House press corps and Hollywood celebrities.

"The first thing I did when they asked me to do this gig — I made sure my taxes were paid," quipped Sykes, taking a dig at the withdrawal of former U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle from Obama's cabinet due to unpaid taxes. Sykes, who booked the gig this week, said the idea of performing for such a high-profile crowd is "scary but very exciting." The dinner has tripped up comedians before. Rich Little and Stephen Colbert both provoked criticism of their performances before the crowd. She said it's her job to "poke fun and ridicule," and even a popular figure like Obama isn't off limits. She already has some ideas about what she could mine for laughs. For example, she noted, Obama can be "a little long-winded. So we can get him on that."
I'm not sure anybody could ever top Stephen Colbert from a couple of years ago, but this should be great.

Wanda Sykes And Hillary Duff Fight Teen Usage Of "That's So Gay"

Semi-out comedian Wanda Sykes and actress Hillary Duff have joined with the Advertising Council and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in a national campaign to discourage teenagers from saying "that's so gay" to refer to things they don't like.
The campaign, which is scheduled to be announced by the council in Washington on Wednesday, will seek to discourage bullying and harassment of teenagers who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

The campaign, created pro bono by the New York office of Arnold Worldwide, urges an end to using derogatory language, particularly labeling anything deemed negative or unpleasant as “so gay.” That is underlined by the theme of the campaign: “When you say, ‘That’s so gay,’ do you realize what you say? Knock it off.”

There will be television and radio commercials, print and outdoor ads and a special Web site devoted to the campaign (thinkb4youspeak.com). Some spots feature celebrities, the young actress Hilary Duff and the comedian Wanda Sykes, delivering the message.

The campaign is on behalf of a nonprofit organization in New York called the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or Glsen (pronounced glisten), which promotes tolerance among students. Glsen is spending about $2 million to develop and produce the campaign.
In the clip above, Sykes overhears teenage boys say "that's so gay" at a pizzeria and confronts them: "How would you like it I said 'that's so 16-year-old boy with a cheesy mustache?'"

Visit GLSEN's ThinkB4YouSpeak site for more and to view the videos. Below is the clip featuring Hillary Duff.
