California Man Busted For Preying On Gay Men Via Craigslist

California prosecutors have arrested a man they dubbed "the gay bandit" after he allegedly robbed numerous gay men he met through the M4M section on Craigslist.
A convicted felon accused of targeting gay men who were looking for dates online was charged with kidnapping, robbery, carjacking and other crimes in Superior Court Monday. Angel Pena Ayala, 24, who was on parole for a previous carjacking conviction, was arrested Friday and pleaded not guilty Monday in Torrance Superior Court, said Los Angeles County district attorney's officials. He was charged with eight felony counts, including the allegation that the crimes were committed for a street gang.

Hermosa Beach police said Ayala placed an online ad on Craigslist.org in the personals section and met his victim at the man's home in Hermosa Beach in March. Authorities accused him of pulling a handgun on the man and ordering him to put his TV, computer and camera into his car. Ayala is accused of ordering the victim to drive to a nearby ATM and forced him to withdraw money. Ayala released the victim in El Segundo and drove off in the man's car, which was found abandoned in Los Angeles, said Sgt. Robert Higgins. Investigators identified Ayala through fingerprints from the recovered vehicle. He is also charged with committing a similar crime in West Hollywood four days earlier. Alaya told investigators he committed as many as three crimes a night, said Hermosa Beach police and prosecutors.
Police suspect that many victims have not come forward due to the sexual angle of the crimes.

eHarmony Settles Gay Lawsuit

Christian dating site eHarmony has finally settled the class action lawsuit which claimed that the company discriminated against gays in California by not letting them use the site.
Under a proposed settlement filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, eHarmony will link its straight and gay Web sites and allow people to use both without paying double fees. Plaintiff's attorney Todd Schneider says the company also agreed to pay about $500,000 to an estimated 150 Californians to settle the class-action suit, plus around $1.5 million in court and attorney's fees. The company didn't admit any wrongdoing. A judge must approve the settlement. A court date is scheduled for Feb. 3.
Last year the company was forced to launch a gay dating site called Compatible Partners as part of the settlement of a similar lawsuit brought by a New Jersey man.

"Fatties" Booted From Dating Site

"Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded." - So says the site's founder after booting more than 5000 members for gaining weight.
The members were singled out after posting pictures of themselves that reportedly showed they had put on pounds over the holiday period. The site allows entry to new members only if existing members vote them as sufficiently attractive to warrant it. The US, the UK, and Canada topped the list of excluded members. The site has always been unrepentant about its selection process, calling itself "the largest network of attractive people in the world". The move was reportedly prompted by members themselves, who police the membership of the site to maintain a high - if highly subjective - standard of attractiveness.
And here we thought Bear411 was bad.

E-Harmony's "Shotgun Wedding" Launches

Last year a New Jersey man successfully sued Christian-run dating site E-Harmony under his state's anti-discrimination laws. As part of their settlement, today the site launches their LGBT dating campaign.
As of today, EHarmony comes out of the closet. The adamantly heterosexual dating website, which has accepted only male-female couples since its inception in 2000, is launching a gay matchmaking service called Compatible Partners. But EHarmony's new relationship with the gay community is more like a shotgun wedding: The company agreed in November to start the dating service as part of a settlement with the New Jersey attorney general in the wake of a discrimination suit. Dating site consultant Mark Brooks says Compatible Partners will be watched closely. "This will be one of the most scrutinized products in Internet dating," said Brooks, who hasn't worked for EHarmony. "They will have to introduce an A1 product."
Do you really want to give them your money?

Q: Location? A: Right Behind You, Dude

The Washington Post writes about the latest iPhone app which uses the device's geolocation function so homos can find other homos that happen to be nearby.
We've seen a handful of dating applications that cater to the straight community, and today brings the launch of Grindr (iTunes Link), one of the first iPhone applications geared towards gay and bisexual men. While privacy is an issue for all location based social networks, it is of the utmost importance on gay networks. Without proper security measures, bigots could easily download such applications and use them to pinpoint targets for hateful slurs and potentially even violence. Grindr deals with these issues by obscuring a user's absolute location by default. Rather than plotting each user on the map. Grindr displays how far away they are (distances can range from a few feet to miles away). The application presents users with a list of nearby strangers, arranged in a grid of photos (you can click on a photo to see their personal profile). From here, users can strike up a real-time chat. If they decide they like their new acquaintance, they can they optionally choose to reveal their exact locatio

Police: George Weber Killed By 16 Year-Old Met On Craigslist

Using the murdered gay newsman's email history, the NYPD has easily found the killer of George Weber, a 16 year-old he met on Craigslist. The killer has confessed.
A 16-year-old confessed to stabbing WABC newsman George Weber during a drugged-up date with the older man, police sources said Wednesday. The emotionally disturbed teenager was arrested early Wednesday morning after he admitted to cops that he had answered an ad Weber placed on the Internet looking for a partner in rough sex, police and law enforcements sources said. "He saw the victim's ad looking for violent sex and said "I can smother somebody for $60" but it got out of hand," a source said. The teen admitted he stabbed Weber, but couldn't remember how many times because he "blanked out" during the violent, drug-fuelled assault. The teen was in custody this morning at Brooklyn's 76th Precinct. Cops found the suspect by combing through Weber's e-mail and Web browser history and tracking calls he made from his cell phone, sources said.
A memorial service for Weber is being planned.

Top 25 Hook-Up Sites

A year ago I posted the list of the most popular online "dating" sites as measured by an outfit called Online Personals Watch. Below is their most recent ranking, listed by number of visits, not membership. On the homo hook-up tip, Gay.com was #11 last year, now it's dropped entirely off the chart. Manhunt moved up a notch to #7 and Adam4Adam jumped up two rungs to #5. The traditional marriage redefining Ashley Madison site for cheating heteros makes its debut at #20. I have no idea what any of this means. Note the absence of Craigslist's popular hook-up service, which probably can't be measured.

The Christian Right is SO Disappointed With eHarmony For Caving To The Gays

From the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins:
The surest way to lose the culture war is refusing to fight. Unfortunately, no company illustrates that better than eHarmony, whose shocking concession to the homosexual movement is sending tremors through the faith community. In New Jersey, a man named Eric McKinley filed a complaint against the dating service, arguing that its website discriminated against homosexuals by not offering same-sex matching. When the state's attorney general pressed eHarmony about its policy, the company surrendered on the spot. Instead of fighting New Jersey's unreasonable demands, eHarmony collapsed under the intimidation. In a settlement reached out of court, Neil Clark Warren's enterprise agreed to cover $50,000 in administrative costs, pay McKinley $5,000, and give free six-month memberships to the first 10,000 homosexuals who register.

To those of us in the pro-family movement who hailed eHarmony's commitment to the virtue of traditional marriage, the company's actions are distressing and damaging. Even legal experts on the Left agreed that McKinley didn't have a case since Warren, as the owner of a private company, has a right to keep lawful limits on his clients. What's worse, there were plenty of ways for the site to resolve the issue and keep its policy intact. For instance, eHarmony could have simply refused to service the state of New Jersey. Instead, Warren conceded significant moral ground, opening the door to a wave of attacks on other dating sites like catholicmatch.com. Please join us in expressing your disappointment by emailing customerrelations@eHarmony.com or by calling 800-951-2023. Let them know how troubling it is that a company once so bold in its mission to establish "successful heterosexual marriages" is now actively participating in the assault on the true meaning of sexuality.
Yay! Infighting! Yay!

eHarmony Forced To Love The Gays

Thanks to a lawsuit filed in New Jersey, eHarmony has been forced to drop their "no gays, no way" policy and beginning next year gay folks can use the service.
Internet matchmaker eHarmony.com will provide same-sex matching services in 2009 under the terms of a settlement reached today in New Jersey. The online dating service, founded in 2000 in California, has 20 million clients, according to its website. Eric McKinley, a gay man from New Jersey, filed a discrimination suit against eHarmony Inc. in 2005 after the service refused to take his personal advertisement. McKinley's suit triggered a N.J. state investigation of the service. Under the terms of the settlement, eHarmony agreed to provide a new service for gay men and lesbians by March 31 under the headings "male seeking male" and "female seeking female." In return, the complaint against eHarmony was dismissed by the N.J. Division on Civil Rights. The company and its founder, Neil Clark Warren, were absolved of any liability.
I say fuck those douchenozzles anyway. Use Chemistry.com or one of the other services that has welcomed homos from Day One.

Transman Booted From Bi Dating Site

A 25 year-old Boston transman had his profile removed from a bisexual dating site last week after revealing to the site's operators that he had recently transitioned.
When Nick Teich created a free account on the online personals site BiDatingNow.com last week, he decided to disclose that he is transgender. Perhaps he shouldn’t have. "They say, tell us about yourself in your own words. And I stated, ’I’m a 25-year old trans guy living in Boston.’ ... I didn’t want to mislead anyone looking at my profile, so that’s why I put that," said Teich. Within a day he had received three "smiles," which members send to express their interest in getting to know each other.

Teich thought little of his decision until he wrote to the site’s customer service staff about a problem he was having using the site. He exchanged e-mails with a customer service representative named Kiar Dupuis, and after reading his profile Dupuis informed him that the site does not allow transgender users.

"I am sorry, as a transgender, our site would not meet your needs. I am afraid we have to remove your profile," wrote Dupuis, according to an e-mail provided to Bay Windows by Teich. His profile was deleted shortly after he received the e-mail.
Site officials defended their action by saying that prior to his transition, Teich had registered on their lesbian dating site, which shares profile information with BiDatingNow.com
"We do not have a site appropriate for transgenders. You joined our lesbian site, which is not your sexual preference. You then listed yourself as a bisexual man. This is absolutely a violation of our community rules because we do not allow any man on a lesbian site," wrote Dupuis. "You are NOT a lesbian therefore you cannot and will not be a part of our lesbian community."
Transmen are not a part of the lesbian community? That'd be a shocker to just about anybody at last week's Dyke March.

Top 25 Hook-Up Sites

This weekend while I was writing The Revenge Of Plan B, I couldn't remember or find the name of the hook-up site that everybody in SF was using in 1999, so eventually I just gave up and plugged "Manhunt" into the story. Somehow during my hunt for the site's name, I came across a place called Online Personals Watch, which tracks the business of personals/dating/hook-up sites. According to OPW, here's what Hitwise reports are the top 25 such sites, ranked by visits.

1 Singlesnet
2 PlentyofFish
3 eHarmony
4 Yahoo Personals
5 TRUE
6 Match
7 Adam4Adam
8 Manhunt.net
9 Blackpeoplemeet
10 Mate1
11 Gay.com
12 DateHookUp
13 BlackSingles
14 Onlinebootycall
15 Cupid.com
16 Hot or Not
17 MSN Dating (Match)
18 OutPersonals
19 SingleParentMeet
20 JustSayHi
21 American Singles
22 Love Access
23 BBPeopleMeet
24 Webdate
25 OK Cupid

I've never heard of most of these sites, but it's interesting to see that Adam4Adam, a site I first heard mention of a few weeks ago, is ranked higher than Manhunt.
