Dutch Lesbian Takes Gold At Sochi
Openly gay speedskater Ireen Wüst took the gold today in the women's 3000-meter race, becoming the first out athlete to medal at the Sochi Olympics. Today's is her third Olympic gold medal, hence her pose in the above photo.
Wüst finished in just 4 minutes, 0.34 seconds — just ahead of Martina Sablikova, the defending champ. Sablikova took silver after stopping the timer at 4 minutes, 1.95 seconds, while Russia’s Olga Graf won the bronze medal, finishing in 4 minutes, 3.47 seconds. Graf’s medal is the first in the games for Russia, the host nation. Wüst, 27, won her first gold medal at the age of 19 in the same event during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, becoming the youngest Dutch Winter Olympic champion. In 2010, she won gold in the the women’s 1,500-meter race in Vancouver, Canada.Here are the medal standings after three days.
