There aren't many above-ground subway stations in Manhattan, but these two "headhouses" are my favorites. The
top station, on the south side of Broadway and 72nd, was build by George L. Heins in 1904, and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Across the street, a second headhouse was
added in 2002, providing crossover between the northbound and southbound tracks. I actually like the new one better, rather atypical for me, but I think they did a fantastic job both reflecting and contrasting the original headhouse.
