In 1893 J.P. Morgan commissioned
Stanford White to build the opulent
Metropolitan Club after Morgan was denied membership to downtown social clubs, as bankers were considered low-class. Built at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 60
th, it is considered by many to be Stanford White's best work. Other Manhattan landmarks by Stanford White: the
Washington Square Arch, the Century Club, the
Payne Whitney Mansion.
