Maine Senate Vote Imminent

The Maine Senate is expected to take its first vote today on a bill that would allow same-sex couples to marry in Maine. On Tuesday, the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee voted 11-2-1 in support of the bill. Eleven members of the committee voted ought to pass, two voted ought not to pass and one voted to send the question to voters. Opponents said they are prepared to present lawmakers with more than 10,000 signatures in opposition to the bill. Marc Mutty, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, called it “an avalanche of opposition,” in a news release.The Maine House is not expected to vote on the bill until next week.
