Hate Group Rallies In Iowa
"If we want marriage equality, let’s just stop for a second. Why stop at same-sex marriage? Why not have polygamy? Why not have a dad marry his son or marry his daughter? If we’re going to have marriage equality, let’s open this puppy up and let’s have marriage equality. Otherwise, let’s stick to the way God designed it – one man and one woman, period." - Family Leader head Bob Vander Platts, speaking yesterday at a hate march demanding that the Iowa Senate allowing a public vote to repeal same-sex marriage.
Hundreds of conservative Christians crowded the Iowa Capitol this morning in favor of advancing a proposed state constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage. The rally and lobbying effort, organized by the conservative advocacy group the Iowa Family Leader and two national groups opposing same-sex marriage, was aimed at the Democrat-controlled Senate, where a proposed amendment has stalled after passage in the Republican House last year. Organizers instructed rally attendees from across the state to lobby their own state senators, but also to target a handful of Democrats who might be supportive of the amendment and Sen. Michael Gronstal, who as majority leader has its blocked consideration.RELATED: Late last year Vander Platts was rumored to have sold his endorsement to Rick Santorum in return for a $1M "donation" to his group.UPDATE: Towleroad has some clips.
