Homocon Loses San Diego Mayoral Race
GOP homocon Carl DeMaio, who refused to take a public stance on marriage equality or Proposition 8, and who was loudly booed during this year's pride parade, has lost his bid for mayor of San Diego.
DeMaio conceded shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, saying: "It’s time for all sides to come together and put the best interest of San Diego first." DeMaio dropped from a lead at about midnight, dropping 1 percent as more precincts reported. Then, at about 12:40 a.m., Filner jumped to lead the race with just over a 2,000-vote lead. Filner has 51 percent and DeMaio had 49 percent of votes. There are still more than 475,000 absentee and provisional ballots that need to be counted. The San Diego County Registrar said the final tally will be Thursday by 5 p.m.San Diego Mayor-Elect Bob Filner is a nine-term Democratic U.S. Congressman who supports full LGBT equality. He has a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign. (Tipped by JMG reader Damon)
