QUEENS: Former NY Sen. Hiram Monserratte Gets Two Years In Prison

Former Democratic New York Sen Hiram Monserrate has been sentenced to two years in prison for campaign finance fraud.
The ex-Queens politician was also ordered to cough up $79,000 in restitution, following his guilty plea in May to mail fraud. Monserrate is expected to report to prison in March. “Hiram Monserrate was undone by his greed and now will pay the price,” said city Department of Investigation Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn. “He used a nonprofit’s money to serve his own political career rather than his constituency and with today’s prison sentence will forfeit his freedom.”
RELATED: Monserrate is the third former New York Senator to be sentenced to prison this year. All three are Democrats. And all three played a role in the 2008 debacle that, for the time, blocked same-sex marriage for New York state. (The remaining douchebag of that infamous quartet is Ruben Diaz.) Still awaiting trial is another Democrat from the New York Senate, Shirley Huntley, who was arrested in September on corruption charges.
