"It seems to me we are encouraging the behavior of purchasing food and discouraging the behavior of purchasing anything else." - GOP Kansas state Sen. Jeff Melcher, speaking in opposition to a bill that would reduce the sales tax on groceries. According to Melcher, lower taxes on food is a form of social engineering that will only cause people to get fat. Despite Melcher's keen analysis, the bill passed in the state Senate by a vote of 25-14.  GOP Gov. Sam Brownback opposes any reduction in sales tax.
