INDIANA: State House Reps "Wavering" On Bill To Ban Same-Sex Marriage
The Indianapolis Star reports:
In an Indianapolis Star poll of all 100 members of the Indiana House, 38 said they planned to vote in favor of House Joint Resolution 3, the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, while 38 said they would vote no. Another 13 members said they were undecided going into the weekend; 11 declined to give a response. That leaves the outcome uncertain, with 51 votes needed to pass or defeat the amendment. That gives opponents a better shot than most anyone expected just weeks ago, but they still need to woo 13 non-committed lawmakers — including at least 11 Republicans — to kill the ban. "Everyone assumed it would be closer this time than in 2011," said Andy Downs, director of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. "But this is a lot closer than I think people would have expected. "If I were leadership at this time," he said, "I'd be pretty nervous right now." Even backers acknowledged the shift. "That's consistent with what we're hearing," said Curt Smith, director of the Indiana Family Institute, a group supporting the amendment. "I think it's tightening."The vote may come as soon as today.
UPDATE: Opponents to the bill asking for emails to the wavering reps. Fly, monkeys.
