In regard to Tom Tancredo's racist Tea Party Convention speech, about which I've blogged several times, last night Rachel Maddow ran through some of the infamous questions on voter literacy test questions given to black voters in the south during the Jim Crow days. I couldn't answer a single one.

More delightful post-convention infighting from the teabaggers!
Following the weekend convention sponsored by Tea Party Nation, a social networking site for tea partiers, a rival site, Tea Party Patriots, sent out an email message to its members complaining about the “media frenzy” around the convention and advising them to be wary of anyone trying to hijack the movement. The “Real Tea Party Conventions,” the message said, would be the Tax Day Tea Party rallies on April 15, which are being sponsored by Tea Party Patriots, with help from Washington advocacy organizations like FreedomWorks. “We the people are smart and will not buy any tactics by politicians to use or co-opt us or the movement,” the message said. “The Tea Party Movement started because of these tactics and we will not be used like this.”Tea Party Nation says that Tea Party Patriots' plan for another April 15th tax rally is a waste of the time because Congress ignored them the last time around anyway. But, but....we NEED that rally for more hilariously misspelled signage material!

In an interview after her Tea Party convention keynote speech, Sarah Palin was noticed to refer to crib notes written on her palm for her talking points. This, from the woman who has repeatedly ridiculed Barack Obama for using a teleprompter, including minutes earlier from the teabagger podium. Apparently the woman who wants to be the next president cannot remember difficult words like "budget" and "tax cuts."Labels: HA HA HA, hypocrisy, Sarah Palin, Tea Party Convention, teabaggers
Here's the entire thing, if you can bear it. Palin spends the hour spewing vapid patriotic catch phrases and slams of Obama. And little else.

World Net Daily founder Joseph Farah and his Just For Men Olympics gold medal winning mustache spoke at the Tea Party Convention last night. Farah's speech was devoted almost entirely to the birther movement. And Jeebus. Who did have a birth certificate, apparently. Or something. Incidentally, this is the first I've heard Farah's voice, which for somebody who runs the most widely-read anti-gay site in the country is pretty damn gay sounding. He tries mightily to suppress his lisp, but it roars out in phrases like "thuthpiciouth thircumthantheth." I'm just saying.

The first ever Tea Party Convention got underway in Nashville today with a speech from former Rep. Tom Tancredo in which he lamented the loss of the Jim Crow days when southern blacks had to pass a literacy test in order to vote. In his speech Thursday to attendees, former Republican congressman Tom Tancredo invoked the loaded pre-civil rights era buzzword, saying that President Barack Obama was elected because "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country." Southern states used literacy tests as part of an effort to deny suffrage to African American voters prior to Johnson-era civil rights laws. "Prior to passage of the federal Voting Rights Act in 1965, Southern (and some Western) states maintained elaborate voter registration procedures whose primary purpose was to deny the vote to those who were not white," a website for civil rights veterans explains. "In the South, this process was often called the 'literacy test.' In fact, it was much more than a simple test, it was an entire complex system devoted to denying African-Americans (and in some regions, Latinos) the right to vote."Tancredo went on decry the multicultural state of modern America and said that it's time for (presumably white) Americans to "take it back."

"I will not benefit financially from speaking at this event. My only goal is to support the grassroots activists who are fighting for responsible, limited government — and our Constitution. In that spirit, any compensation for my appearance will go right back to the cause. The nature of the Tea Party movement means there may never be a "perfectly orchestrated" event: Democracy in action doesn't come with a manual. But we must not get caught up in the politics or the controversies that some hope will distract from the heart of the movement. The focus must remain on our ideas and beliefs, and on supporting those ideas and beliefs however we can." - Sarah Palin, confirming that she will indeed attend this weekend's disintegrating Tea Party Convention in Nashville.Labels: Nashville, Quote Of The Day, Sarah Palin, Tea Party Convention, teabaggers
Next month's Tea Party Convention is falling apart over questions about where the money will go. Crazy-eyed Rep. Michele Bachmann has joined the list of those pulling out. Oh noes!
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has become the latest to pull out of a scheduled speaking gig at the controversial National Tea Party Convention next year. Like Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) earlier today, Bachmann's office cited concerns about the event's financial arrangements. Some Tea Partiers have accused the convention's organizer, Judson Phillips of Tea Party Nation, of seeking to profit from the confab.Reportedly Sarah Palin is also being pressured to pull out of the convention. She and WND founder Joseph Farah are scheduled to be the keynote speakers.

I guess our socialist-fascist-communist leader hasn't totally destroyed the economy if the knuckle-dragging teabaggers can sell out the Sarah Palin - Joseph Farah tag-team moronathon at $550 each! Each convention registrant will receive a lovely gift bag containing an American flag pin, a copy of Going Rogue, a white hood, and an 8x12 glossy of Jesse Helms, suitable for framing.Labels: Matt Barber, Tea Party, Tea Party Convention, teabaggers, Tweet Of The Day
