Charles Ramsey: Auto-Tuned

Before watching, you might want to check out Slate's dissection of the "troubling viral trend of the 'hilarious' black neighbor."  Discussed there are Ramsey, Sweet Brown, and Antoine Dodson.

Reality Hits You Hard, Bro

NYC's Gregory Brothers songify a man's account of his car accident. I never get tired of these, but I'm still waiting for something as culture-shaking as Bed Intruder.

Eccentric Robbery Witness Song

The Gregory Brothers have their usual fun, this time with the witness to a convenience store robbery. The original news clip is first. BTW, their last such effort, the Bed Intruder Song, actually made the Billboard charts and topped iTunes.

DJ Earworm's Summer 2010 Mashup

We usually don't hear from DJ Earworm until he issues his wildly popular end-of-year Billboard Top 25 mashups, but he's already done one for the halfway mark of 2010. As you might expect, it's an auto-tune-athon.

Super Bowl Commercial Round-Up

Here's a few of the more noteworthy ads from last night's Super Bowl, starting with the strange "effeminate gay slap" clip from Motorola. Huh? I especially liked the Vizio "stars of the internet clip" with Beyonce, although you have to pay attention to catch all the references. And of course I included the tribute to Auto-Tune and the parody of Lost.

Symphony Of Science

As much as I make fun of Auto-Tune, I've really enjoyed the Symphony Of Science series, whose makers wrote yesterday to tip us that the fourth installment, The Unbroken Thread, is now up on YouTube. Free downloads at the above link.

The Auto-Tuning Of America

Billboard.com has added a nifty audio player to its Hot 100 chart which allows readers to play many of the charted singles in full. About 50% of current hits are heavily auto-tuned, including much of the Top 40. I'm calling it "robot pop."

How Auto-Tune Works

I caught an cute segment about Auto-Tune on PBS' Nova, in which music engineers point to Cher's 1998 hit Believe as the first dramatically pitch-altered hit single. It seems like every other song on the radio right now uses the Believe gimmick, doesn't it?
