Will Portia Same-Sex Dance On DWTS?

This morning Ryan Seacrest had a surprise for Mrs. Portia DeGeneres during a radio interview, announcing that she was under consideration to be Dancing With The Stars' first same-sex contestant.

"They're planning to feature a same-sex couple. You're at the top of the list," Ryan told her. "Goodness, you really do break news," Porita replied startled. But she didn't pass. "I'm not gonna pass, let me think about it," she told him. "I used to be a ballet dancer, it's not completely a pass. You never know."

This week a same-sex couple debuted as contestants on Israel's version of the show. Producers at the American version are reportedly monitoring the reaction of the Israeli public very closely.

Same-Sex Pair Auditions Well On So You Think You Can Dance

You may recall that the last time a same-sex couple auditioned on So You Think You Can Dance, judge Nigel Lythgoe told them they "would alienate the audience" and "I like to see guys be guys and girls be girls on stage." Lythgoe's comments were condemned by GLAAD and he eventually issued an apology. Properly cowed, last night Lythgoe was much kinder to another same-sex pair, who performed much better than the ones that had caused the earlier flap, bringing the female judges to tears.
