NEW YORK CITY: Satanic Temple Seeks To Join Highway Adoption Program
The Satanic Temple of Brooklyn has launched a crowd-funding campaign to join New York City's Adopt-A-Highway program. From their IndieGoGo page:
Help The Satanic Temple spread their message as they enter the adopt-a-highway program in New York City where they will maintain voluntary beautification of a stretch of public highway for at least 2 years by way of litter cleanup and landscaping. Once approved, the New York Department of Transportation will erect a blue-and-white sign acknowledging The Satanic Temple as the adopters of the designated piece of highway, helping promote a message of Satanic Civic pride and social responsibility. The group is seeking to raise $15,000 and says that money will go towards "contesting the decision" if the Department of Transportation refuses their request. So far they've raised exactly ten dollars. The possibility that their request will be refused is, of course, not mentioned by World Net Daily, which is claiming to have "obtained" the story from an undisclosed source even though they've merely copied the text from the IndieGoGo page. Below is the Satanic Temple's clip in support of the campaign.
Against a cultural backdrop noted for simplistic dichotomies and a monotone voice known as “the” religious agenda, the Satanic Temple boldly stands forth to assert the too-often-marginalized voices of religious non-believers. The Satanic Temple seeks to separate Religion from Superstition by acknowledging religious belief as a metaphorical framework with which we construct a narrative context for our goals and works. Satan stands as the ultimate icon for the selfless revolt against tyranny, free & rational inquiry, and the responsible pursuit of happiness.
