The East Village's
Cooper Union was founded in 1859 as one of the nation's few all-scholarship colleges, and is one of the most selective, rejecting 88% of applicants. Students are not required to declare a major and are largely free to select courses from any discipline. Most of the school's operating budget comes from alumni donations.
