Governator: The Veto Vill Be Bahck
I'm hoping this news won't dissuade anybody from attending tonight's marches and rallies, but the Governator has announced that he will once again veto California's marriage equality legislation. Yesterday, Schwarzenegger said that he would only approve gay marriage if voters overturned 2000's Proposition 22, which banned same-sex marriage, but which courts have said only applied to those married out-of-state.
Geoff Kors of Marriage Equality reacted to Schwarzenegger's announcement: "We're extremely disappointed he is taking a position on the bill without meeting with a single lesbian-gay family, as we have asked him to do the last two years."
In related news, the Maryland Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples do not have a constitutional right to marriage. HRC's Joe Solmonese: "This is a setback in the fight for equality, but we remain confident that, ultimately, same-sex couples in Maryland who form committed relationships and build loving families will receive the same protections that the state provides to married opposite-sex couples. It’s up to fair-minded legislators in Annapolis to do the right thing by ending discrimination against same-sex couples and their families. We urge Maryland’s legislature to pass a bill extending marriage to same-sex couples, so that these families can receive the important protections they deserve."
It's a lose-lose day for the movement. Sad face icon: here.
