Internet Protest Sells Out Queens Stadium

Remember when I told you that Ultra Orthodox Jews had rented Citi Field for a massive anti-internet protest? Well, it's so sold out, they've had to also rent the nearby Arthur Ashe Stadium, home of the U.S. Open, as a satellite protest venue. The New York Times has more:

Speakers at the rally in Queens will not seek to ban the Internet, but rather to raise awareness about how, unmonitored, it poses a grave risk to the community, said Eytan Kobre, a spokesman for the organizers. The risk, he said, comes not only from pornography, but also from social media and the addictive pull of the Internet, which can limit human interaction, reading and study. “These are the same concerns that people across society — in academia, in psychology, parents, spouses — have about the Internet,” he said.

“But here is a community that is actually standing up and coming together and putting our money where our mouth is, to express a unified communal resolve to address the issues.” At both stadiums, only men are invited, because of the ultra-Orthodox practice of strict gender separation. The meeting will be broadcast live to audiences of women in schools and event halls in Borough Park and Flatbush in Brooklyn and in other ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, according to Hamodia, a newspaper serving the Orthodox.

Ultra Orthodox Jews Against The Internet

Next month tens of thousands of Ultra Orthodox Jews will rally in Citi Field, the Queens home of the New York Mets. Their mission is to denounce the modern world, specifically the internet and its supporting devices. The following notice has been published in NYC's Jewish Press:

It is well known that in recent times that through the Internet many serious family-related problems have been created, and it all happens because of it, and something must be done so they won’t be hurt. And since this touches almost everyone, we must assemble together to protect and be protected, and we hope that through this gathering in search of ideas we will be helped from Heaven to save the many, and may it be that we will be successful in encouraging the public not to stumble over this obstacle, and the Lord will guide us in a truthful path. And note that sometimes the suspension of Torah is the very way it which it must be kept.

The event will cost an estimated $1.5M. The Mets are on the road that weekend.

Wife Of Former Mets Player Roberto Alomar Sues Over HIV Exposure

The wife of former New York Mets second baseman Roberto Alomar has filed a lawsuit claiming he had unprotected sex with her even though he knows he is HIV-positive. A former girlfriend of Alomar filed a $15M suit on the same grounds last year. Alomar settled that case out of court.

"Prior to the marriage" in 2009, the suit says, Alomar assured his wife "he had been tested for sexually transmitted diseases and the tests were negative." At some point after their wedding, she discovered that wasn't true, the filing says. She "learned from conclusive proof" that he was HIV-positive, the court papers say. The discovery caused her to "suffer extreme emotional distress, fear and mental anguish," the filing says. She has "not contracted the virus to date but uncertainty still exists due to the delay in the onset of the virus." Lawyers for the Alomars did not return calls for comment. Rivera's filing says she wouldn't have agreed to "marry him if she had known of his true physical condition."

Alomar's wife, who had once denounced the claims of the former girlfriend as "vile lies" says she now wants a divorce. Alomar has consistently denied that he is HIV-positive. He became eligible for the Baseball Hall Of Fame this year, but narrowly missed induction. Some sports writers have speculated that the HIV issue may have cost him that honor as many consider him to be have been the greatest second baseman in the history of the sport. He remain eligible until 2024.

The NY Mets were "justifiably freaked out" to realize they were staying in the same hotel as a furry convention during this week's away games in Pittsburgh. First Streaker At Mets' Citi Field Faces A Year In Jail Thanks To Calvin Klein

On Monday a man became the first person to streak across the diamond at the Mets new Citi Field stadium. Meh, boring, and I wasn't even going to blog about it. But today comes news that the man faces a year in jail thanks to a 2005 law enacted by the city after a drug-addled Calvin Klein rushed the court at Madison Square Garden to chat with Knicks player Letrell Sprewell. Klein checked into rehab after the incident. The Mets are pressing charges and have permanently banned the fan from Citi Field. The streaker says he had no idea that the penalty was so stiff.
