It appears that next week's Blowoff party in DC may be the last one.

Saturday, January 18th will be the last Blowoff for the foreseeable future. We’re taking an indefinite break to focus on other projects. Eternal thanks to everyone who has made Blowoff a success for the past 11 years. It has been important to many people — us three included. We hope to see you on MAL Saturday for one more BLOWOFF DC celebration! - Nick Lopata, Rich Morel, and Bob Mould.

Eleven years is a impressively long run for any party, much less one that catered to a somewhat older crowd that typically doesn't do a lot of clubbing. Over the last decade I've been been to dozens of Blowoffs, mostly in Manhattan - but also in DC, San Francisco, Provincetown, and Brooklyn. I'll always remember it with a smile. Thanks, guys. Deathfix—the Dischord Records supergroup comprised of [Blowoff DJ] Richard Morel, Fugazi's Brendan Canty, and Medications' Mark Cisnero, and new drummer Jerry Busher—released their debut self-titled album early this year, and it's still a frontrunner for one of my favorite albums of 2013. Today, the psychedelic post-punk band put out a music video for their goofy, funk/house-inspired jam, "Dali's House." The track, wherein Morel lists off the benefit of living in various famous people's houses, sounds suspiciously like an LCD Soundsystem B-side, and that's only heightened by the band's playful self-awareness of that fact: "I wish I was in James Murphy's house," Morel sing-speaks, "because you can steal ideas, and Daft Punk's always playing there."

Blowoff & Furball Go To P-Town

Two of my favorite parties will land in Provincetown during Bear Week 2013, which starts this weekend. Furball with DJ Corey Craig is Sunday, Blowoff with DJs Rich Morel and Bob Mould is Tuesday. Both parties at are the famed Boatslip, which doesn't do advance tickets. Parties start and end early, as does everything in Provincetown.

Friday In New York City: Blowoff To Raise Money For Ali Forney Center

The favorite traveling party of dancing bears nationwide, Blowoff lumbers its sweaty, furry, beer-soaked self back to New York City this Friday at the Highline Ballroom. And this time, DJs Bob Mould and Rich Morel have a special message:

For the last seven years, the Ali Forney Center has helped LGBT youth who have been displaced for many reasons. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy destroyed the drop-in center in Chelsea. And now they need our help more than ever. Rich and I are grateful for the support NYC has given BLOWOFF. This Friday we're donating a portion of our proceeds to the Ali Forney Center. Thanks for letting us be a small part of your community. We're proud of you all! Bob + Rich

Ali Forney's now-destroyed drop-in center was just a few blocks from the Highline, which was undamaged. In addition to Blowoff's generous donation, staffers from Ali Forney will be on hand during the party to answer questions and accept donations from attendees.  Tuck an extra $20 into your boot, Daddy! 

Doors open at 11:30pm and advance tickets are recommended.  Between Hurricane Sandy's cancellation of all those Halloween events and the celebratory mood over the election, you can expect that this party will sell out.

Swag Tuesday

This week's Swag Tuesday prize is the new album from gay rocker Bob Mould. Silver Age goes on sale nationwide on September 4th and is currently being streamed in its entirety by Rolling Stone. Their review:

Alt-rock icon Bob Mould has made his share of confessional albums layered with deeply personal sentiments, but his latest project isn't one of them. "Silver Age is exactly what it appears to be: It's 38 minutes of rock," Mould says of the album, which Rolling Stone premieres exclusively today. "People can feel free to parse the songs and make what they want of them, but I didn't really have any agenda there."

That's not entirely true, but Mould's agenda had less to do with baring his soul than raising his pulse. After dissecting his own life for last year's memoir See a Little Light: A Trail of Rage and Melody, Mould was ready to do something that didn't require sitting still and being introspective. The result is a propulsive album full of bristling songs as catchy as any Mould has written, with no trace of the electronic elements Mould has dabbled in over the years

Jake Shears At Blowoff NYC

Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears (left) dropped in at Blowoff NYC last night for some dancing with the bears and a chat with his pal DJ Rich Morel (right). The brand new Scissor Sisters track had only seen its global debut hours earlier on BBC 1, but luckily Jake had the single on his phone. One patch cord later and the entire room was jumping to Only The Horses. Technology is grand!

FLASHBACK: I think I first met Jake five years ago when we were both on the bill at Reading For Filth. He looks younger today than he did then. I've gone completely bald. How does that work?

Bob Mould Rocks Madison Square Garden

At a sold out show at Madison Square Garden, the Foo Fighters invited openly gay rock legend Bob Mould to join them for a jam session which included a cover version of Tom Petty's classic, Breakdown. The audience gave Mould a rousing welcome.
