Janet Jackson - No Sleeep

TIME recaps:
It’s been five years since Janet Jackson’s last album and four since her last tour, but 2015 is unquestionably the year of the Janet comeback. She’s already announced a world tour and a new studio album—her eleventh—and Friday morning she debuted the first video for a song off that album. The video for “No Sleeep” (spelled with an extra “e,” perhaps to emulate Jackson’s crooning voice), a sultry slow jam about nights put to good use, features Jackson holed up in a cozy chalet on a rainy night. Teaming up with the uber-relevant J. Cole—a smart choice for a comeback single—Jackson conjures the laid-back, sexy vibes of early ’90s singles like “That’s the Way Love Goes.”

Janet Jackson - No Sleeep

E! Online reports:
It's the moment we've all been waiting for! Janet Jackson debuted her highly anticipated new single "No Sleeep" to much fanfare Monday morning. The 49-year-old singer, who is recording her first album in seven years and will kick off a world tour later this year, worked with veteran producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the laid-back track. "I dedicate this to My Love," she tweeted, referring to husband, business magnate Wissam Al Mana. (Yes, she spelled the title with three e's.) Jackson's world tour begins Aug. 31 at the Pepsi Live at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

Janet Jackson To Make Trans Films

Janet Jackson is bankrolling a film which will document the struggles of transgender people around the world.
“All people are very important to me,” said Jackson. “Truth is our small chance to ask that you try and understand someone who lives their life in a way that is a little bit different from yours, even though all of our hearts are the same. We want to stop the hate and find understanding.” Director Robert Jason, whose previous documentaries have included a film detailing the lives of four transgender New Yorkers, has turned his attention to stories from around the globe in this new project, featuring people from Europe, North America, Australia and Latin America. He claims his new film will highlight landmark stories in the LGBT community and change the gender landscape of the world in the future.

The Eternal Nipple

Did you know that CBS fought their fine over Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction all the way to the Supreme Court? Today SCOTUS ordered a lower court to consider reinstating the $550K fine imposed by the FCC for that 9/16ths of one second of nipplisticated naughtiness.

Bill Johnson of the American Decency Association is pleased: "It is encouraging to see the U.S. Supreme Court send a strong message to what we know is the very liberal Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals."

Thousands of gruesome murders on every channel at every hour, but $550,000 for less than a second of titty. Insanity.

#1 This Week In 1991

This week in 1991, Love Will Never Do (Without You), the seventh and final single from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, topped the Billboard pop chart for one week. It was written and produced by the now legendary team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, both formerly of Prince's opening act, The Time. The video was directed by famed fashion photographer Herb Ritts and was the second of his iconic trio of sexy black & white + sand music videos, the first being Madonna's Cherish, the third being Chris Isaak's Wicked Game. The video for Love Will Never Do (Without You) featured appearances from Calvin Klein underwear models Antonio Sabato Jr. and Djimon Hounsou, both of whom went on to acting careers, the latter somewhat more successfully.

TRIVIA: With Love Will Never Do (Without You), Janet Jackson became the only artist in chart history to score seven Top Five singles from one album. The clip won three MTV Music Awards that year: Best Female Video, Best Choreography, and Best Art Direction.

Janet - Rock With U

Let's close out today's 80's icons love fest with some Janet Jackson. Island hasn't sent me the track yet, so head over to Janet's site where a pop-up player will stream her next two singles, Rock With U (not a remake of MJ's song by the same name, thankfully) and Luv.

Man, I freekin' love the Rock With U track. Get that? I like a new pop single. The album, Discipline, comes out Feb. 26th. The single isn't available yet, but if you pre-order the album on iTunes, you get Rock With U on Feb.5th. Interesting tactic.

Somehow I don't think Paula Abdul's Super Bowl performance this weekend will live on in pop culture history like Janet's has. Who was the last pop star to give the world a catchphrase as enduring as "wardrobe malfunction"?

UNRELATED: Next month GLAAD gives Janet their 2008 Vanguard Award.
