GOP Debate Audience Cheers When John Kasich Expresses Support For Gays

The Huffington Post recaps:
“Our court has ruled and I said we’ll accept it,” Kasich said in response to a question from moderator Megyn Kelly about what he would do if his child were homosexual. “And guess what? I just went to a wedding of a friend of mine who is gay." "Just because they don’t think the same way doesn’t mean we shouldn’t love them,” he added. “That’s what we’re taught when we have strong faith." The crowd cheered Kasich’s response. The reaction contrasted starkly with a 2011 Republican presidential debate in which audience members booed Army Capt. Stephen Hill, a gay combat veteran, for speaking favorably about the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
It really was a surprising moment.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich: I'm Waiting For God To Tell Me To Run For President

Unlike in 2012 when such claims were made by Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Santorum, so far none of the declared GOP presidential candidates have explicitly said that God told them to run for president. That may soon change. Politico reports:
Ohio Gov. John Kasich continued to signal his increasing interest in running for president Sunday, saying he’s waiting for a signal from God before making the call. “My family is a consideration,” the Republican governor said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “Number two, the most important thing is, what does the Lord want me to do with my life?” While he awaits that clarity, Kasich said he’s been active on the trail just in case. “I’m not going to figure [it] out laying in bed, hoping lightning strikes,” he said.

Ohio Gov Reaffirms Marriage Opposition

Ohio Gov. John Kasich said yesterday that he supports an appeal of the coming ruling that his state must recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages.
“The people of the state, including me, voted years ago on a constitutional amendment to say that marriage is between a man and a woman,” Kasich said. “(Black) has overruled that in some respects, and that’s what a federal judge can do. But it doesn’t change the fact of how people voted.” Kasich’s likely Democratic opponent in November, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, said the governor wasted an opportunity to send an important signal that Ohio is a tolerant and welcoming state. “Not only is accepting the federal ruling the right thing to do, but increasingly businesses, conventions, and major sporting events are considering a state’s openness when deciding whether or not to bring their business here. Gov. Kasich’s announcement today was a step in the wrong direction for Ohio’s LGBT community and for our economy,” FitzGerald said in a statement.
The judge that promised to force the state to recognize out-of-state marriages has not yet issued his ruling. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has vowed to make an immediate appeal to the Sixth Circuit Court.  (Tipped by JMG reader Gustav)
