Kelsey Grammer Mulls NYC Mayoral Bid

Actor Kelsey Grammer is reportedly considering running for mayor of New York City. The very conservative Grammer would run as a Republican and is said to have a $100M personal fortune from which he could draw. The 56 year-old was most recently in the news when he married his fourth wife, age 29, after a very public and bitter falling out with wife number three.

Broadway Friday

- Legendary playwright and Tony nominee Charles Busch (left) has opened Off Broadway with his latest, The Divine Sister, in which he plays Mother Superior of St. Veronica's, where "dark secrets are rampant." Early reviews are boffo.

- Nicole Kidman returns to Broadway next fall in a revival of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird Of Youth. The original 1959 production starred Geraldine Page and Paul Newman.

- Jodie Foster, Kate Winslett, and 2010 Oscar winner Christopher Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) will star in Roman Polanski's movie adaptation of the Tony winning drama Gods Of Carnage. Although the play is set in Brooklyn, filming will take place in France because, well, you know.

- The cast recording of the revival of Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's La Cage Aux Folles has been released. Kelsey Grammer's vocals are reviewed as "rough."

- Playwright and gender-bending actor David Greenspan stars as Queen Elizabeth in the Off Broadway revival of Virginia Woolf's Orlando, now running at the Classic Stage Company.

- Jerry Seinfeld will make his Broadway debut as the director of former SNL cast member Colin Quinn's one-man show, which begins an 11-week run at the Helen Hayes on October 22nd.

- The musical version of Steven Spielberg's hit movie Catch Me If You Can is scheduled to land on Broadway in the spring. The show had a well-received tryout in Seattle last year.

- Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrman is creating a stage version of Strictly Ballroom.

2010 Tony Award Nominations

La Cage Aux Folles and Fela! lead the list of the 2010 Tony Award nominees, which were announced this morning. Both shows received eleven nominations each, the Fences getting ten. Self-proclaimed gay rights hero Sean Hayes earned a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in Promises, Promises. JMG reader Kevin Chamberlin (left) got a Best Featured Actor in a Musical nomination for his great turn as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family. This is his third Tony nomination (Dirty Blonde, Seussical.)
The 2010 nominations lacked a clear standout like last year’s “Billy Elliot,” which received 15 nominations. But the roster was noticeably rich with screen stars who had bravely left the security of movie sets for the lights of Broadway. Nominees who were making their Broadway debuts included Jude Law (“Hamlet”), Scarlett Johansson (“A View From the Bridge”), Catherine Zeta-Jones (“A Little Night Music”) and Sean Hayes (“Promises, Promises”). The nominees also included Christopher Walken (“A Behanding in Spokane”), Laura Linney (“Time Stands Still”), Kelsey Grammer (“La Cage aux Folles”) and Liev Schreiber (“A View From the Bridge”). Among the acting nominees were three grandes dames of the stage – Rosemary Harris (“The Royal Family”), Barbara Cook (“Sondheim on Sondheim”) and Angela Lansbury (“A Little Night Music”). A number of blockbuster productions came up noticeably short on Tuesday. “American Idiot” – the rock musical featuring songs by the band Green Day – was nominated for best new musical but received only two other nods. “The Addams Family,” which has been a box-office success so far despite mostly bad reviews, received only two nominations.
The complete list of nominations is here.
