Broadway Friday

- Spider-Man lead Natalie Mendoza is permanently leaving the accident-plagued show, citing continuing dizziness from a concussion suffered during the first preview. In other incidents, one actor broke both his wrists, another broke both his ankles. Mendoza's replacement has not been announced. The show continues in previews towards a February 7th official opening.

- Tony nominee John Leguizamo's new solo show, Ghetto Klown, begins previews at the Lyceum on February 21st for a 12-week limited run.

- Andrew Lloyd Weber will launch a U.S. reality show search for the lead in his stateside production of The Wizard Of Oz. His West End production opens in February with added numbers by Weber and his longtime collaborator Tim Rice.

- Women On The Verge will close three weeks early this Sunday.

-Well-known Manhattan cabaret singer David Gurland suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage on Wednesday. Gurland is a frequent performer at The Duplex and Don't Tell Mama.

- Billy Crudup and Raul Esparza will star in the revival of Tom Stoppard's stage comedy, Arcadia, which begins a limited run on February 25th.

- The creators of South Park come to Broadway on March 24th with their musical look at the founding of the Mormon Church, The Book Of Mormon.

- Sunday's blizzard did a number on Broadway attendance, with even tickets for the eternally sold out Wicked coming available at the last minute. Still, a number of houses did record-breaking business for the holiday week.

- Ann Harada (Avenue Q, Les Miz) will star with the NYC Gay Men's Chorus at their gala fundraiser on February 28th.

Broadway Friday

-Steve Hayes (Tired Old Queen At The Movies) stars with playwright Bradford Scobie and drag legend Murray Hill in Moisty The Snowman Saves Christmas, now running Off Broadway at Dixon Place. Get tickets here.

- Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) will replace Christian Borle as Prior Walter in the critically raved Off Broadway revival of Tony Kushner's Angels In America. Urie steps in on February 2nd, the production has been extended until March 27th.

- Whoa. Jackie Hoffman (love her!) is talking serious trash about her role in The Addams Family. "We're the only musical that doesn't appeal to gay people." But it has Nathan Lane and (JMG reader/Tony nominee) Kevin Chamberlin in it!

- Henry Rollins brings his one-man show to Joe's Pub for a week beginning February 8th. It's his 50th birthday celebration and you know you're going.

- Beginning previews Off Broadway on December 22nd is Richard Skipper As "Carol Channing" In Concert. Get tickets here.

- Oscar winner Halle Berry makes her Broadway debut this fall in Katori Hall's The Mountaintop opposite Samuel L. Jackson. Last year the play won the Olivier Award for its West End run.

- ABC is developing a drama for Tony winner Idina Menzel (Wicked), who will play a single mom who sings at weddings and bar mitzvahs to pay the rent. Menzel makes her debut with the New York Philharmonic on February 5th.

Broadway Friday

- Hugh Jackman will star in a new musical titled Houdini, scheduled to open sometime in 2012. Aaron Sorkin is doing the book, Danny Elfman (!) is writing the music, lyrics by Glenn Slater.

- The musical version of Women On The Verge just opened and the reviews are scathing.

- Kiefer Sutherland will make his Broadway debut this March in the revival of Jason Miller's Tony-winning That Championship Season. Chris Noth and Jason Patric to co-star.

- Soap opera stars will join Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for their spring gala at Town Hall. Scheduled to appear: Cameron Mathison, Anthony Geary, the cast of The View, others. Get tickets here.

- Rosie O'Donnell plays Town Hall tonight as part of the New York Comedy Festival. Get tickets here.

- The delay-plagued Spider-Man has pushed back opening day yet again, this time to January 11th, missing the entire (and very lucrative) holiday box office.

- The Off Broadway revival of Tony Kushner's Tony and Pulitzer-winning Angels In America is earning rave reviews. Who here has seen it?

Broadway Friday

- Openly gay Broadway star Marty Thomas (Wicked, Xanadu) is suing Twitter to force them to disclose the identity of a user who claimed that Thomas was given crabs by a cast member of Avenue Q. Thomas said in court papers: "I do not suffer from, nor have I ever suffered from a sexually transmitted disease." Twitter has never been forced to identify an anonymous user.

- In The Heights star Janet Dacal opens this April in a new musical "inspired by" Alice In Wonderland. Also cast is openly gay singer/dancer Tituss Burgess (Jersey Boys). Music by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll And Hyde).

- Openly gay actor T.R. Knight (Grey's Anatomy) and Patrick Stewart opened last night in the revival of David Mamet's A Life In The Theatre, which first ran on Broadway in 1977. One early review isn't so great.

- The Professional Bull Riders Association will hold a competition in the middle of Times Square today at 1pm. The specially-built arena is supposed be "one city block" in size. Free and open to the public.

- Openly gay Tony winner David Hyde Pierce opened last night in the revival of David Hirson's flop La Bete to decidedly mixed reviews.

- Four major musicals are opening on Broadway this fall without the usual out-of-town tryouts due to the cost. One result - terrible scenery glitches for Women On The Verge have resulted in show stoppages and apologies from the stage.

- Bette Midler so loves the musical version of Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert that she has become one of its producers. The show made its North American debut in Toronto this week and lands on Broadway in the spring.

- The Real Housewives of New York's Countess LuAnn de Lesseps is reportedly talking to casting directors from Chicago and La Cage Aux Folles about joining their shows. Money can't buy you class, as her "song" goes.

- Broadway Speaks Out founder Marti Gould Cummings opens a new weekly Broadway revue at the Upper East Side's Evolve Bar this Tuesday. First to appear are Next To Normal's Emma Hunton and Stonewall Sensation winner Erik Sisco. Showtime 10:30pm.

- Tony winner Betty Buckley (Cats) has released a new nine-track album titled Bootleg: Boardmixes from the Road. Buckley, who has been cast as Anna Madrigal in the musical version of Tales Of The City, plays Manhattan's Town Hall tomorrow night as part of their Broadway Cabaret Festival. Get tickets here.

Broadway Friday

- Legendary playwright and Tony nominee Charles Busch (left) has opened Off Broadway with his latest, The Divine Sister, in which he plays Mother Superior of St. Veronica's, where "dark secrets are rampant." Early reviews are boffo.

- Nicole Kidman returns to Broadway next fall in a revival of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird Of Youth. The original 1959 production starred Geraldine Page and Paul Newman.

- Jodie Foster, Kate Winslett, and 2010 Oscar winner Christopher Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) will star in Roman Polanski's movie adaptation of the Tony winning drama Gods Of Carnage. Although the play is set in Brooklyn, filming will take place in France because, well, you know.

- The cast recording of the revival of Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein's La Cage Aux Folles has been released. Kelsey Grammer's vocals are reviewed as "rough."

- Playwright and gender-bending actor David Greenspan stars as Queen Elizabeth in the Off Broadway revival of Virginia Woolf's Orlando, now running at the Classic Stage Company.

- Jerry Seinfeld will make his Broadway debut as the director of former SNL cast member Colin Quinn's one-man show, which begins an 11-week run at the Helen Hayes on October 22nd.

- The musical version of Steven Spielberg's hit movie Catch Me If You Can is scheduled to land on Broadway in the spring. The show had a well-received tryout in Seattle last year.

- Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrman is creating a stage version of Strictly Ballroom.

Broadway Friday

-Openly lesbian Tony winner Cherry Jones (Doubt) begins previews tonight in George Bernard Shaw's Mrs. Warren's Profession. Opening night is October 3rd.

-Next Sunday (Sept. 12) La Cage Aux Folles lead Kelsey Grammer hosts the annual Broadway On Broadway spectacular in which the casts of more than two dozen hit Broadway shows perform for free in Times Square to the accompaniment of a 30-piece orchestra. Arrive by 11am (or earlier) for a good view as Times Square will be mobbed blocks deep in front of the stage. Jay-Z and Alicia Keyes will perform New York State Of Mind for the finale.

-AbFab's Jennifer Saunders is collaborating with Mamma Mia! mastermind Judy Cramer on Spice Girls: The Musical, which "won't be a tribute or bio show, nor will it feature characters with any of the names of the famous five-piece." OK, then.

-John Paragon (the original Jambi) and Lynne Marie Stewart (the original Miss Yvonne) have been cast for the "re-imagined" Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway. Mekka-lekka-hi.

-Stephen Sondheim's 1981 bomb Merrily We Roll Along opens tonight at Fire Island Pine's Whyte Hall. Get tickets here.

-The Broadway debut of the WWII gay love story Yank! has been postponed until the fall of 2011. The show played Off Broadway last year to (mostly) rave reviews.

-Kenny Solms' gay comedy/musical It Must Be Him opened Off Broadway this week at Playwrights Horizon. Emmy nominee Peter Scolari (Newhart) stars. Get tickets here.

-Prostitution whores! On Thursday the cast of Real Housewives Of New Jersey kicked off a four night sold-out appearance in Off Broadway's My Big Gay Italian Wedding. Teresa Giudice, Ashley Holmes, Jacqueline Laurita, Caroline Manzo and Lauren Manzo return to the show for four more appearances beginning on October 20th. Get tickets here.

Broadway Friday

-New attitude! Patti Labelle will join the cast of the Tony-winning Fela! on September 14th and will perform there until the show's scheduled closing in January. She will replace Tony winner Lilias White in the role of Fela's mother.

-A Broadway version of Glee will definitely happen, according to the show's co-creator Ryan Murphy, who says he is already auditioning the cast. No opening date has been disclosed. Murphy is also slated to direct the movie version of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart.

-Hairspray Tony winner Marisa Winokur will co-host the coming CBS talk show about motherhood with openly lesbian Rosanne star Sara Gilbert.

-Patti Lupone and Brian Stokes Mitchell will star in the musical version of Pedro Almodovar's Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown, which begins previews at the Belasco Theatre on October 2nd.

-Turn around bright eyes: Tony nominee Justin "Kiki" Bond will perform a series of dates at Joe's Pub beginning on September 12th. If you haven't seen Justin Bond, you are missing one of the truly unique theatrical experiences of our days.

-Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark will finally begin previews on November 14th after almost a year of delays related to its record-breaking $50M production cost.

-Tony winner Beth Leavel (Drowsy Chaperone) and George Wendt (Cheers) have been cast in the musical version of Elf, set to open at the Hirshfeld on November 14th. Wendt will play Santa, the lead role of Buddy has not yet been cast.

Broadway Friday

- Jesse Tyler Ferguson and a host of fellow gays earned Emmy nominations yesterday. Joining the Modern Family star with noms are Neil Patrick Harris, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Alan Cumming, Lily Tomlin, and Ian McKellen. Glee leads the pack with 19 nominations. Darling of the gays Betty White scored a nom for her gig as SNL host.

- South Pacific will be made as a movie again, but the songs will be retooled to be "edgier," whatever that means. Casting not announced. The show first opened on Broadway in 1949, the last revival has been playing Lincoln Center since March, 2008. The first movie version opened in 1958.

- Four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks will helm Sister Act: The Musical when it arrives from London's West End next spring. It's expected to be next season's blockbuster.

- After 13 years at Radio City, next year's Tony Awards may take place at Washington Height's United Palace Theatre waaay up at 175th Street.

- Tomorrow Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore stage their 12th annual Broadway Barks on Schubert Alley to benefit local animal rescue groups. Expect major Broadway talent and legendary stars of the past to be on hand.

- Broadway In Bryant Park's summer series of free lunchtime shows began yesterday and continues for the next five Thursdays. Next Thursday's performers include the casts of South Pacific, Billy Eliot, and Memphis. Shows start at 12:30pm behind the Main Public Library.

- The New York Times tips Hell's Kitchen's Bar-Tini Ultra Lounge as the hip new place to meet chorus boys on their night off. I've been, it's true. Love the hostess, Paige Turner.

Broadway Friday

- Mark Ruffalo will star in a movie version of Larry Kramer's AIDS drama, The Normal Heart. Other casting and production details have not been announced but reportedly Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy is involved.

- Elf: The Musical (SRSLY) opens at Broadway's Hirschfeld Theater on November 2nd. Tony nominee Casey Nicholaw will direct and choreograph.

- Standing room, rush, and lottery discount tickets for this weekend's Broadway shows are available here.

- Molly, you in danger, girl. A musical version of Ghost starring Laura Michelle Kelly is slated to open on London's West End in 2011.

- Drag queen alert! Liza Minnelli has launched her own line of clothing and jewelery on the Home Shopping Network. The line includes "sequined separates and signature flowy pants." Werq!

- Last month's Broadway Bares XX raised over $1M for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The previous record was 2008's $874K. So far the show has raised over $7.5M to battle HIV.

- James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave have been cast to star in a Broadway version of Driving Miss Daisy, set to begin previews on October 2nd. The Pulitzer-winning play debuted Off Broadway in 1987 starring Morgan Freeman and Dana Ivey.

Broadway Friday

-Neil Patrick Harris will be among 30 celebrities to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Other honorees: Joe Mantegna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Donald Sutherland, Penelope Cruz, Bruce Dern, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, The Muppets, Kenny Ortega, Ridley Scott, Sissy Spacek, Reese Witherspoon, Danny DeVito, Tina Fey, Simon Fuller, John Langley, Ed O'Neill, John Wells, Oprah Winfrey, Melissa Etheridge, Los Tigres Del Norte, Rascal Flatts, Go-Go's, Slash, Will i. Am, and Bebe & Cece Winans. Whew!

-GLAAD will host an evening at the Tony winning revival of La Cage Aux Folles on June 24th. Tickets are almost half-off with 10% of sales going to GLAAD.

-Finally? Rehearsals for the long-delayed Spider-Man: The Musical are said to be starting on August 10th. The show is said to be the most expensive in Broadway history.

-The Tony Awards will need a new home next year after 13 years at Radio City. Under consideration: the Apollo, the Beacon, and Madison Square Garden. Too small, too small, and way too big. Where's the Goldilocks house?

-The 2010 cast of Broadway Bares is releasing a CD from the show titled Openings. Get it here. Performers include Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess, Euan Morton, Mo Rocca, Christopher Sieber, and many others. Great CD review here. Broadway Bares XX: Stripopoly takes place this Sunday at the Roseland Ballroom. I'll be at the extra-raunchy midnight show!

-Broadway legends Elaine Strich and Bernadette Peters will replace Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones (respectively, of course) when Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music resumes on July 13th. The show with the current cast concludes this Sunday.

Broadway Friday

-Don't cry for him, Puerto Rico. Ricky Martin will star in a revival of Evita slated to open in the 2012 season. Martin will play narrator Che (based on Che Guevara) opposite West End veteran Elena Roger in the title role. Evita last ran on Broadway from '79-'81. Martin made his Broadway debut in 1996 as Marius in Les Miserables.

-Knowing when to leave: Kristen Chenoweth will depart the smash Promises, Promises on September 26th. No word on who will replace her opposite Sean Hayes.

-Hair will close on July 27th. Attendance has been down ever since much of the original cast left for the new West End production.

-T.R. Knight will star opposite Patrick Stewart in the Broadway premiere of David Mamet's A Life In The Theater. Previews begin on August 23rd.

-Spoiler alert! Playbill has the list of songs, performers, and presenters slated for this Sunday's Tony Awards. Peek if you must.

-The eternal argument continues: Are the best theater experiences in NYC on Broadway or Off-Broadway? The more recent argument: Has Broadway gone too Vegas?

-Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS presents the 20th annual Broadway Bares spectacular on Sunday, June 20th at the Roseland Ballroom. Broadway Friday

-I know you are but what am I? The Pee-wee Herman Show will transfer from its wildy successful Los Angeles revival to Broadway for a six week run to start on October 26th. The show debuted in 1980 as a for-adults act before morphing into the kids friendly TV show that ran from 1986-1990.

- Beefcake-O-Rama! Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS will stage Broadway Bares: Classic on June 6th at Splash Bar. Scheduled to perform: Jerry Mitchell, Jennifer Cody, Steve Geary, Sebastian LaCause, and others. Tickets for Broadway Bares 20: Strip-Opoly are on sale now.

-The password is "Dirty Sanchez." Saved By The Bell's Dustin Diamond will join the cast of Off Broadway's Awesome 80's Prom beginning tonight.

-Probably not loverly. Sony Pictures is moving forward with the fifth remake of My Fair Lady. Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan is set to star.

-She's bringing sexy back. Jessica Biel has been cast to star in the musical version of Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown, which begins previews at the Belasco on October 2nd.

-Dolphins are just gay sharks. The first season of Glee will be released on DVD on September 14th. The set will feature sing-along karaoke, behind-the-scenes extras, and several unaired editions of Sue's Corner.

-I love that dress every time you wear it. The revival of Ragtime has been stripped of its 2010 Tony nomination for Best Costumes because the designs are essentially the same as those used in the 1998 production. There will be no replacement nominee.

-But who will play Ping Pong Lady? Will Swenson and Tony Sheldon will star as Mitzi and Bernadette (respectively) for the Broadway transfer of the West End smash musical version of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Felicia has not yet been cast. The show will run in Toronto beginning in October before opening in the spring on Broadway.

Broadway Friday

-Liza Minnelli will release a new album titled Confessions in September. The CD will come in two versions. The track listing for the extended 15-cut deluxe edition is here. The album's producer has not yet been named.

-Christine Ricci makes her Broadway debut in Time Stands Still when it reopens on Broadway in September. Laura Linney will rejoin the cast from the show's limited run at Manhattan Theatre Club earlier this year.

-No more tomorrows. Vintage comic strip Annie will cease production next month after 85 years. Little Orphan Annie launched in the New York Daily news in 1924.

-Antonio Banderas will star in a revival of Zorba, set to open in September 2011.

-Broadway World has launched Critics Report Card, where they collect reviews and assign aggregate scores. This week's top ranked show is the revival of Chicago with a 9.5. At the bottom: The Addams Family with 4.6.

-Broadway-related tourism contributed $9.8B to the NYC economy in the 2008-2009 season. $2B of that was ticket sales.

-Doris Eaton Travis, the last of the Ziegfeld Follies Girls, died this week at the age of 106. Davis was a vocal supporter of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The darling of Broadway's chorus boys, she often appeared in Broadway Cares' annual Easter bonnet contest.

-Tony nominated set designer Christine Jones has created a temporary Broadway theater with just one seat. Shows are running in Times Square for ten days beginning today, featuring plays, stand up comedy, and even a dance piece. One performer, one audience member, multiple shows per day. Tickets are free.

Broadway Friday

-Brandon Victor Dixon, currently earning rave reviews in The Scottsboro Boys, will take the title role in the upcoming Unchain My Heart: The Ray Charles Musical. The show begins previews on October 8th.

-The 2010 Tony Awards nominations will be revealed on Tuesday at 8:30am. Watch live on the official site.

-Try to remember: Tomorrow The Fantasticks celebrates its 50th anniversary with a special event that includes over 50 alumnae of the show appearing for the curtain call and a group song.

-Cheyenne Jackson, Jesse Martin, and Rosie Perez are among the presenters at this year's Drama Desk Awards at Lincoln Center on May 22nd. Patti LuPone will host. "No fucking cameras!"

-Testa-fy! Tony nominee Mary Testa will star in the Off Broadway run of I'll Be Damned beginning July 1st at the Vineyard. She was fantastic in Xanadu.

-All that scam: Composer John Kander and the estate of Bob Fosse are suing Disney over royalties from the Oscar-winning film version of Chicago. The parties claim Disney has cheated them out of $12M.

-We don't need no jukebox-ucation. Pink Floyd's The Wall: The Musical. SRSLY.

-She's the top: Tony winner Sutton Foster will star in a revival of Cole Porter's Anything Goes, set to open next season. Patti LuPone starred in the most recent Broadway production in the 80s.

-Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, and Neil Patrick Harris have supplied tracks to Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers, which will be released on May 18th.

-Alan Cumming has dropped out of the forever delayed Spider-Man: The Musical due to a scheduling conflict. The show was supposed to open in February, no firm date has yet been announced.

-Go to Broadway World for this week's rush, lottery, and standing room discounted tickets.

-David Hyde Pierce will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Award at this year's Tonys for his charity work on behalf of Alzheimer's Disease.

-Law & Order's Chris Noth will star in the 2011 revival of Born Yesterday. The play first opened in 1946, with Madeline Kahn starring in the 1989 revival.

-Tony winner (and beyond fabulous) Beth Leavel will perform with a cast of stars on May 17th at Broadway Unleashed, a benefit for Sean Casey Animal Rescue. Bernadette Peters and Chita Rivera are scheduled to speak.

Broadway Friday

-Daniel Radcliffe will star in the 2011 revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Radcliffe received positive notice in 2008's production of Equus, but has not yet performed in a Broadway musical. Matthew Broderick won the Tony in the same role in 1995.

-The NFL makes its first foray into Broadway as a promoter of the upcoming Lombardi, a show about legendary coach Vince Lombardi. Dan Lauria of The Wonder Years will star in the title role.

-Monday, May 3rd, Rep. Barney Frank will join the cast of The Temperamentals for a post-show chat on stage. Ugly Betty's Michael Urie co-stars in this telling of the formation of the early gay rights group, The Mattachine Society.

-South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have announced plans for a musical Latter Day Saints spoof tentatively titled The Book Of Mormon. The show is set to open in March 2011 and OMG Cheyenne Jackson will star.

VIDEO: Here's the new ad for Come Fly Away. Dancer and actor unions are presently warring over who should administer the show. The dancers union says the show, which features the recorded vocals of Frank Sinatra, has "no narrative thread," meaning it is strictly a dance show and therefore under their purview.

Broadway Friday

-Sexy space stud Patrick Stewart returns to Broadway next season in David Mamet's A Life InThe Theater. Engage!

-Despite many rave reviews for Little Miss Sunshine's Abagail Breslin, the revival of The Miracle Worker closes on Sunday after only 38 performances.

-Musical Everyday Rapture will replace Lips Together, Teeth Apart which was torpedoed when lead Megan Mullally walked out. Opens April 29th. Fans are begging Megan to defend herself. Jeremy Pivens redux?

-Madonna spotted attending FELA! with four of her children: David, Mercy, Rocco, and Jesus. What? Gossipers dished Madge's outfit as inappropriate for her advancing years. Whatever.

-Bombtastic All About Me, starring Michael Feinstein and Dame Edna closes Sunday after only 20 shows. The house only grossed 23% of the max during the run.

-First quarter 2010 Broadway grosses: $238M. That's up 4.4% from last year.

-Dancer and actor unions are warring over whether the Sinatra jukebox tuner Come Fly Away is a musical or "an evening of dance." The dancer union says there's no narrative in the show, therefore they should administer the Equity contract.
