DC's Anti-Gay Marriage Protest "Like A Hitler Youth Rally"

At today's anti-gay marriage rally in DC's Freedom Plaza, NOM-organized haters turned with arms outstretched to cast the Holy Spirit upon the evil sodomites in the building across the street where DC's City Council meets.

JMG reader Russ sent us the photo and says:

"This is a group of demonstrators at Freedom Plaza in DC, today. They were shouting "NO SAME SEX MARRIAGE NOW!" The rally was sponsored by NOM, apparently. I was amazed that there were no counter protesters. I wish the attached pic was closer to them, but the guy was speechifying and praying and asked that they raise their hands to the District Building across the street, to impart the power of the Lord on those inside (to vote against same sex marriage). The fact that suddenly it looked like a Hitler Youth rally was apparently lost on all of them."

Sci-Fi Writer Orson Scott Card Joins NOM

National Organization for Marriage head Robert George is still insisting that the Mormon Church is not funding NOM, but yesterday another high-profile Mormon, noted sci-fi author Orson Scott Card joined its board of directors.

In a Mormon Times column published last August, Card called for the overthrow of the government over same-sex marriage.

If America becomes a place where our children are taken from us by law and forced to attend schools where they are taught that cohabitation is as good as marriage, that motherhood doesn't require a husband or father, and that homosexuality is as valid a choice as heterosexuality for their future lives, then why in the world should married people continue to accept the authority of such a government? What these dictator-judges do not seem to understand is that their authority extends only as far as people choose to obey them. How long before married people answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.

Justice Is Gathering

You've got to read Frank Rich's column in the NYT today in which he eviscerates NOM and the anti-marriage equality movement and says that they've lost the fight. A delicious snippet:

Far from terrifying anyone, “Gathering Storm” has become, unsurprisingly, an Internet camp classic. On YouTube the original video must compete with countless homemade parodies it has inspired since first turning up some 10 days ago. None may top Stephen Colbert’s on Thursday night, in which lightning from “the homo storm” strikes an Arkansas teacher, turning him gay. A “New Jersey pastor” whose church has been “turned into an Abercrombie & Fitch” declares that he likes gay people, “but only as hilarious best friends in TV and movies.”

Yet easy to mock as “Gathering Storm” may be, it nonetheless bookmarks a historic turning point in the demise of America’s anti-gay movement.

What gives the ad its symbolic significance is not just that it’s idiotic but that its release was the only loud protest anywhere in America to the news that same-sex marriage had been legalized in Iowa and Vermont. If it advances any message, it’s mainly that homophobic activism is ever more depopulated and isolated as well as brain-dead.

Rich closes with this: "It is justice, not a storm, that is gathering. Only those who have spread the poisons of bigotry and fear have any reason to be afraid." Read the entire essay.

Colbert On NOM

NOM responds: “I’ve always thought Stephen Colbert was a double-agent, pretending to pretend to be a conservative, to pull one over Hollywood. Now I’m sure," said Maggie Gallagher, President of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). “Thank you Stephen for playing our ad in full on national television—for free. HRC eat your heart out. Plus we all had a great chuckle, too!" said Brian Brown, NOM’s Executive Director. "Where can I make a donation to the National Organization for Colbert?"

Listen My Homos And You Shall Hear

Tomorrow Californians Against Hate will be launch a six-state online ad campaign in the Northeast to let everybody know that NOM, the National Organization for Marriage, is a front group for the Mormon Church. Banners ads will appear on the capital city hometown papers of states currently in play for marriage equality: NY, NJ, DE, ME, NH, and RI.

Designed to counter the commercial released last week by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) “A Gathering Storm,” Californians Against Hate will launch its own advertising campaign beginning tomorrow in: New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Delaware, Rhode Island and Maine. “We believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) established the National Organization for Marriage as its front group in order to qualify Proposition 8 for ballot last year in California,” said Fred Karger, Founder of Californians Against Hate. “After spending several million dollars in California, NOM recently moved into 7 Northeast States considering marriage equality.

They lost in Vermont on April 7th, when the Legislature voted to override Governor Jim Douglas’ veto the very next day. Vermont became the 4th state in the nation to allow same-sex couples the right to marry. NOM was very active in Vermont, paying for a massive advertising campaign, including radio, direct mail and robo-calling everyone in the state with a recorded message. Political experts think that their heavy--handed tactics backfired, and they lost because of it.

Now NOM is charging into 6 more Northeast states. So tomorrow, April 18th, on the 234th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride from Boston to Lexington, we will begin our online advertising campaign. Our ad harkens back to 1775 when a brave Paul Revere rode his horse to warn of the attack by the British. We wrote our own version of Longfellow’s famous poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” entitled, “The Mormons are Coming, The Mormons are Coming!”

Is NOM Worried About Being Sued By Their Own Anti-Gay Actors?

One of my favorite YouTubers just forwarded me the message he got from YouTube explaining why his clip of Rachel Maddow discussing those NOM audition tapes was pulled for copyright violations. Here's a bit of "assistant to the director" of NOM Joshua Baker's complaint about the clip:

The copyrighted work at issue is an audition tape produced by the National Organization for Marriage for the NOM video "A Gathering Storm." Some of the actors who appear on the audition video were not selected for the final video, and thus have not signed releases for the distribution of their likeness. The audition video is included as part of the MSNBC broadcast, and can be identified by the green background.

So is NOM saying that they are worried about being sued by their own actors because they didn't sign a release? Really? If so, delicious.
