Pride Magazine Relaunches As Pride Life

For its 17th annual issue Pride Magazine has changed its name slightly and you'll soon find it stacked around the gayborhoods as Pride Life - which is the same name as its sister publication in the UK. Inside you'll find my interview with the always hilarious Panti Bliss, which I'll excerpt here once the physical copies hit the streets.

Pre-Order Your Pride Magazine T-Shirt

Due to popular demand following yesterday's JMG post, the publishers of the national Pride Magazine have decided to make this year's historic Edith Windsor cover available as a limited edition t-shirt, which will be shipped with a physical copy of this year's magazine.  Reserve your shirt and magazine now by writing to PrideMagazine2013@Gmail.com.  Just state your name and the desired size. You will be contacted for shipping and payment details shortly. The price is $19.95 for all sizes in 100% cotton.

UPDATE: I've been asked to move this post from yesterday back to top because the folks handling your t-shirt orders have been overwhelmed by your responses. I'm told that everybody's emails will be responded to within 24 hours, if they have not yet been answered already. They do have enough shirts for everybody, don't worry.  Simplify the process by just putting the quantity and sizes of your request in the subject line. Examples: "Two mediums" or "One large, one extra-large."

Andrew Sullivan's 2012 Yglesias Award

Our own Father Tony Adams is among Andrew Sullivan's 2012 finalists in his annual Yglesias Award, which is granted to "writers, politicians, columnists or pundits who actually criticize their own side, make enemies among political allies, and generally risk something for the sake of saying what they believe."  Hit the link for the quotes from all of this year's finalists. Vote for your choice at the link.

DISCLOSURE: Father Tony's quote comes from his article in the 2012 issue of the national Pride Magazine, of which I was senior editor.

Quote Of The Day - Father Tony Adams

"Unlike my parents, young Catholics today do not fear or revere the clergy. The worldwide priest pedophile scandal did irreparable damage to the blind respect priests once enjoyed. For young Catholics, the pope is a distant and tiny man; a relic of an age when the temporal power and splendor of the church almost suffocated religion itself. Many of these young Catholics will not be getting out of bed early on a Sunday morning to get their kids cleaned up, dressed and in the car in time for Mass, and they will not be throwing their hard- earned dollars into the collection basket. They will discourage their sons from even considering the priesthood as a vocation. Today, American bishops brazenly insert themselves into politics, preaching messages of hate and intolerance, stripping rights from women and forcing the priests below them to read letters from the pulpit ordering Catholics to behave in certain ways, such as voting against marriage equality.

"Whenever a priest refuses to read such a letter, I am filled with hope that other priests—gay or straight—will stand up with him and will together take a courageous stand against the homophobia of the hierarchy. We live in a time where the sheep must lead the lost shepherds. But my hope is that when those confused old shepherds have passed away, a new generation of Catholic priests, bishops, cardinals, and popes will include openly gay, straight, single and married men and women—people who will not be interested in sticking their noses in Catholic bedrooms but will instead be focused on amplifying the unconditional love of Jesus. I hope I live to see that day. I would not mind receiving the blessing from such a pope and being asked again to step up to that pulpit on the high altar of St. Peter’s Basilica to proclaim the truth of Jesus with the voice he gave me for exactly that purpose." - Father Tony Adams, writing for Pride Magazine.

NOTE: His essay begins on Page 74 and he does not shy away from naming some names from his days at the Vatican.

Dan Savage For Pride Magazine

This gorgeous image was taken by famed photographer Marius Bugge for my Pride Magazine 2011 cover story on Dan Savage. (Marius also shot our last two covers with Dan Choi and Rachel Maddow.) This year's issue of Pride will begin appearing in the usual locations this weekend and I'll post an excerpt from my interview shortly. By the way, I had to flee back inside the studio when Dan leapt up on that 18th floor railing for this shot, which embiggens nicely.

HomoQuotable - Rachel Maddow

"It didn’t come to me in terms of like, 'I think I like that girl', or 'I think I’m falling in love' or 'I think I know what this feeling is.' It was, 'It would make sense to me if I ended up being a gay person.'

"It very quickly became a hormonal urge, but I remember when it first occurred to me that I might be gay, it was more like realizing that that would be the thing that would make sense for a lot of things that I had felt over the course of my whole life, and maybe that was an explanatory construct.

"And I remember thinking that....and then my next thought...and I shit you not...was, 'But I hate softball!' And so I thought, 'I can’t possibly be a lesbian, because the only thing I know about lesbians is they play softball and I will never.'" - Rachel Maddow, from my Pride'09 Magazine interview.

Pride'07 Launches

Pride Magazine 2007, the 10th annual issue of the official publication of gay pride nationwide, has shipped to gayborhoods, LGBT organizations, and local pride committees all over the country. Published in partnership with InterPride, the mentoring, networking, and education coalition of gay pride committees worldwide, by this weekend you will find Pride'07 stacked ass-high from Chelsea to Castro. Contact your local pride committee if you cannot find a copy of Pride'07 in your usual finer homotastic and lesberiffic reading materials locations.

Pride'07 covers state-of-the-movement LGBT issues, from "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" to the plight of Eastern European gays to transgender workplace rights. You'll also find Pride's annual couples photo shoot, fashion coverage, and smart commentary from community leaders. Check out Towleroad's exclusive insight to this year's cover feature about Antonio Agnone and Brandon Juarez, a couple who met while in the Marine Corps and Air Force, respectively, and who now campaign together for the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

RELATED: I forgot to mention that on Memorial Day I appeared on HRC head Joe Solmonese's XM radio show, The Agenda, to talk about the upcoming pride season. You can listen to a stream of my segment on their site. Hopefully you won't think I sound like a complete tool. I'd say it's a 50/50 shot.

ALSO RELATED: This weekend Pride Month kicks into high gear, with major events in Washington, Los Angeles, Boston, Cinncinnati, Philadelphia and other cities. Tomorrow I will rerun for the third time my annual rant about gay pride, apathy, and internalized homophobia.
