Swag Tuesday

Courtesy of the event's producers, today Swag Tuesday prize is two tickets to Whiteout: Evolution Of A Dancer III, the third installment of the dance party that explores the history of gay nightclubbing. Evolution takes place next Sunday, February 17th at Manhattan's Rebel Club. Performing that night are legendary DJs Michael Fierman, and John Celgia. Making his NYC debut that night will be DJ Jimmy DePre.
While dance culture has branched off into many variants and has become a global phenomenon, our concept is to tell our story, chronologically, through the music that is relevant to the people who danced in the clubs from The Loft and the 10th Floor through 12 West, Flamingo, The Garage, The Sandpiper, The Pavilion, Ice Palace, Cherry Grove, Infinity, Studio 54, The Underground, The Saint, Palladium, into The Sound Factory, Twilo, Roxy, Octagon, Discotheque, Element, Love and of course Roseland. A ride in a time machine and a musical journey like no other club experience has ever been presented. We have witnessed a whirlwind of technological advancement both in music production and DJ tools for the presentation of music in the club, as well as the development of the musical styles that move us today.
Evolution Of A Dancer begins at 6pm and continues until 3am. Get advance tickets.  Enter to win tickets by commenting on this post. Only enter once and please remember to leave your email address in the text of your comment. Entries close at midnight on Thursday, west coast time. If you cannot be in Manhattan on the day of the party, your winning entry is transferable to your favorite disco historian. Swag Tuesday

Today's Swag Tuesday prize is two tickets to Evolution Of A Dancer, this Sunday's epic ten-hour journey through the history of gay dance music. Starring legendary DJs Susan Morabito, Michael Fierman, and John Ceglia, the party takes place at Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan's West Village. Doors open at 6pm and the aural excursion begins with the '70s music of the famed 12 West club.

Advance tickets. Event site. Party blog. Subway info.

JMG: Can you explain the "evolution" in the party's name?

Michael Fierman
The title “Evolution Of A Dancer” came out of our notion to present a completely unique dance event: one that told a musical story in a literal chronological order. A dancer, no matter what his or her age, can step on to the floor and be taken on a trip to hear and feel how dance music has evolved. How one movement in dance music follows another. One will not only recall some precious memories of clubs gone by, but also experience the music of today through the lens how “how we got here”. This is not just another oldies party by any means. By 11PM we will have reached the 21st century and all three of John, Michael and Susan’s one hour encores beginning at 1 AM will feature uplifting new music that is in keeping with our goal: not just to preserve the past, but to keep our community’s dance music alive and well into the future.
JMG: What kind of audience will this party draw?

Susan Morabito
We anticipate having an audience who remember music from all the decades we will be covering. Those who remember the music from the 70s will most likely get there on the earlier side and as the night progresses with each hour the music moves along the decades right up to current times. As the music evolves the crowd will most likely shift a little. And of course, like last year, we had people who were there from the first note until the last. Though this will be a prominently gay male dance event, the number of women who attended this event last year was delightfully surprising and we expect more women to be in attendance this year. Evolution of a Dancer is a celebration of music and dancing, it doesn’t cater to any particular group, Evolution of A Dancer is an inclusive event.

I attended last year and had a fantastic time.

Trippin' To The Oldies

Flags, fans, tambourines, claves, cowbells, and baby powder. Sunday's third installment of the Saint reunion party, Trippin' On The Moon, was an end-to-end delight. I walked in to Linda Clifford's sultry 1978 classic Runaway Love and left about seven hours later shortly after the Love Unlimited Orchestra's My Sweet Summer Suite. Perfection. The clip below has some seriously borked audio as I spun around the room too damn close to the speakers at times, so turn it down. But starting around the middle keep an eye out for some JMG regulars, including Charlie, who gives us a short dance floor castanet performance. Congrats to promoter Christine Visca and DJs Micheal Fierman and Robbie Leslie for another fantastic night. The next Trippin' will be in April. Can't wait.

Swag Tuesday

Courtesy of the promoters, today's Swag Tuesday prize is two tickets to Trippin' On The Moon 2, the second installment of the reunion of the members and performers of NYC's legendary Saint disco.
Trippin' On The Moon takes place Sunday, October 11th at Soho's Santos House Party. Original Saint DJs Michael Fierman and Robbie Leslie will spin a night of Saint classics, with lights by original Saint lighting technician Richard Tucker. Advance tickets $35, $50 at the door (if available.) $20 admission to those with an original Saint membership card. The evening benefits Gay Men's Health Crisis, LifeBEAT and Equality Across America - the organization behind the National Equality March.
Back in June, I raved that the first Trippin' party was "my best night out in a least a year, maybe two."
DJs Michael Fierman and Robbie Leslie gave us the full Saint journey - a soulful build-up, a joyous high-energy peak, and a lovely, lovely extended downtrip, complete with just about every Saint classic an old disco dog like me could think of. The sound system was pitch-perfect, clear, strong - but not too loud.
Go here for setlists (in the comments) and videos that I took that night. And yes, it KILLS me that Remember The Party AND Trippin' AND the NEM are all on the same motherfrickin' night.

If you cannot be in NYC this on the day of the event, your winning entry is transferable to another party. Entries close on Wednesday at midnight, Pacific time. Review: Trippin' On The Moon

Sunday night's Trippin' On The Moon - Saint reunion party was quite simply the best fucking night out I have had in at least a year. Maybe two. Maybe three. Dr. Jeff and I arrived at 8pm to find the venue already crowded and the steam never let up until we shut the place down at 3:30am.

Dr. Jeff initially felt out of place in a sea of graying temples, but I reminded him how I feel dealing with the emo kids at the bars he takes me to. And our 23 year-old mascot Little Nick was a delight to watch as he furiously typed song titles into his phone for future downloads. Those who were there, please enter your set lists in the comments, I'll do the same when I get a moment. BIG thanks to event producer Christina Visca for a completely perfect evening. Christina promises another Saint reunion "within a few months." Judging by the response to Sunday's party, it will be an immediate sell-out. Full-screen versions of the above photos are here. Below are two short clips of the scene on the dance floor. I've annotated the songs being played.

DJ Michael Fierman Chats With JMG

Veteran DJ Michael Fierman will play the closing set at this week's Saint-At-Large Black Party. Today, Michael answers a few questions for JMG.

JMG: Tell me about playing at the original Saint. How did you get the gig?

Michael Fierman: Playing records at the Saint was the equivalent of a Carnegie Hall performance for piano recitalists; the ultimate achievement. The prestige conferred on one by giving a successful performance there could launch a career overnight. Naturally, a disastrous first outing there would have an equally chilling effect on a young disc jockey's hopes. In the spring of 1982, the Saint wanted to add a young talent to their staff of veterans much as the Yankees might do today. They launched a series of seven Tuesdays featuring some of New York City's rising prospects with the intention of hiring only one of them as one of their "starters" for the following season. I was fortunate to be the one they chose.

JMG: How many times have you played the Black Party? Is there something different about a Black Party gig?

MF: This will be my 13th appearance as DJ. There are so many differences between the approach to playing the Black Party, and the outlook one might have on other events. Beyond the artistic challenges and opportunities, there was also the issue of orchestrating a cohesive structure for an 18 hour event. In the heyday of the party, and the circuit in general, these musical prerogatives were handed to one DJ, who was entrusted to imbue his or her persona and vision to a musical event. Remember "the trip"? In these days of ADD, where the lowest common denominator is king, these concepts have fallen by the wayside.

JMG: You're known as a "Morning Music" DJ. How would you define morning music?

In an event such as the Black Party, after one has reached the initial "peak", any music that follows could be called morning music. That period of time, what I used to call the "rarefied atmosphere", is where you can be the most creative, delving into all sorts of unusual and eclectic byways, as well as building up to a series of peaks. Each set of music after the traditional 6 am encore would have a different feel and flavor. I always viewed them as movements of a symphony, each one being a viable stand alone piece that relate to and build upon the other. Leonard bernstein's book, The Joy Of Music, was a great inspiration to me as a young DJ, as well as my mentor, Robbie Leslie, and my idol, the great Jim Burgess, whom I still consider to be the greatest artist our profession has ever produced.

JMG:What are some of your favorite classic tracks? Is there anything recent that you feel is a great example of morning music?

MF: Oh dear. The old favorite song question. What can i say? Being pressed for time and space, let's just say one name. Boris Midney. As far as new records, for morning play I'll mention Again by John Legend, Until The End Of Time, by the Sunburst Band, and Karawane by Escort.

JMG: What do you have planned for your Black Party set?

MF: I'm planning an interesting eclectic set. Mostly new, but with a few old friends that we know and love featured.

JMG: What's in your future?

MF: As Albert Einstein said, I never think about the future, it comes soon enough.

JMG: Thank, Michael! Break a leg!
