Noted Activist Rodger McFarlane Dies

Rodger McFarlane, the noted activist and author whose work ranged from ACT-UP to Gay Men's Health Crisis to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, has taken his own life in New Mexico due to failing health. McFarlane had been suffering great pain caused by heart and back problems. Most recently McFarlane was executive director of the Gill Foundation, a group which funds many LGBT causes. GLAAD has posted a joint statement from Tim Gill, Larry Kramer and many other LGBT leaders. McFarlane appears in the currently playing film Outrage, in which Michelangelo Signorile notes he made a "crucial contribution to the film, lucidly describing the closet and the right-wing self-loathing politicians in power who have done much damage -- and with all the humor for which Rodger was always known."

HomoQuotable - Ed Koch

"I believe that same-sex marriage will be approved by a majority of the fifty states in the Union within the next five years. When that occurs, the federal resistance will end and the Congress will vote in favor of federal recognition of same-sex marriages with equal benefits to both homosexual and heterosexual couples. [snip]

"The very next political objective of civil rights advocates should be to achieve in every state that which exists now in New York state, a law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation Today only 20 states protect their homosexual citizens from discrimination. There are cities in some states that have adopted protective legislation where the state has declined, as was the case in New York City. The Empire State Pride Agenda has informed me that the organization has no current compilation of the number of cities providing protection.

"Simultaneously, at the federal level, an effort should be made to end President Clinton’s alleged compromise of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which, regrettably, caused even more gays and lesbians than before the law was adopted to be discharged from the U.S. armed forces. Men and women should be able to serve in the armed forces without regard to their sexual orientation and without any requirement that they conceal it." - Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch, in an editorial published in the Yonkers Tribune.

Koch believes that New York will be the next state to approve same-sex marriage and says that Gov. Paterson should offer to campaign for whomever supports marriage equality, regardless of party affiliation. He also seems unaware that for many years there has been a massive national campaign to achieve the passage of ENDA and the repeal of DADT. Koch was recently profiled in the movie Outrage for his inaction during the early days of AIDS when thousands of his fellow homosexuals in NYC were dying.

Crist To Announce Senate Run

Tomorrow FL Gov. Charlie "Closet Case" Crist will officially announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.
Crist's decision puts Republicans in strong position to hold onto the seat held by retiring Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) Crist holds high approval ratings among both Republicans and Democrats, according to statewide polling, and has forged a moderate governing style that has won him widespread support. His decision to run came as little surprise to political observers, with the governor and his allies hinting of his interest in running for Congress over the last several months. Crist starts out as the frontrunner to succeed Martinez. But he will first be facing a primary against an up-and-coming conservative challenger, former state House Speaker Marco Rubio. Many Florida conservatives have begun to rally around Rubio over dissatisfaction with Crist’s moderate positions, particularly his vigorous advocacy of President Barack Obama’s stimulus package.
Over the last week Crist has been the focal point of national news stories about the film Outrage, which names him as one of the nation's closeted anti-gay politicians.
