On the show Monday morning, she showed a picture of herself with Amber at her niece’s wedding, and announced to applause from the roundtable that she had never been happier or healthier. “I’m going to tell you all this, because you have had a front row seat for that tumultuous year,” Roberts said. “I have never been happier or healthier than I am right now. And my year-end post was just full of gratitude and just telling everyone all that I’m grateful for, including my girlfriend, Amber, who loved me through a very difficult year.”

Don Lemon On Robin Roberts

Openly gay CNN host Don Lemon says it's still very important for famous people to come out.

He spoke of his own struggles coming out to people close to him, and then coming out publicly years later, saying he was fearful at how the news would be received by viewers and others. Lemon said he was “afraid of people like Phil Robertson who claim to love everyone while simultaneously thinking that everyone’s love is unequal.” Lemon expressed hope that in Roberts’ case, “empowerment will quickly replace fear,” and concluded that if people like Robertson have their rights and those rights should be celebrated, then openly gay anchors like Lemon and Roberts “should be celebrated as well,” and “that’s why it’s still important to come out and say, very simply, ‘I’m gay.’”

ABC Host Robin Roberts Comes Out

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts came out publicly today in a message posted to her Facebook page, where she thanked her girlfriend, Amber Laign.

Roberts has been out to her family, friends and co-workers for years, but this is the first time she’s publicly acknowledged her sexuality. "I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together." Roberts and Laign have been together for 10 years. Laign, a massage therapist who works with patients recovering from injuries, is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. A year ago today, Roberts reached the 100 day mark following her bone marrow transplant. Her posting today is a message of thanks for all who helped her along the way.

Roberts has been one of the nation's most public faces of breast cancer since her diagnosis in 2007. Last year she took a leave from GMA after being diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, which can be caused by chemotherapy. The National Marrow Donor Program reported an 1800% increase in donors on the day that Roberts revealed her latest illness to viewers. She returned to GMA in February of this year.
