David Cameron: I'm OK With Gay PDA
British Prime Minister David Cameron was interviewed last night by gay journalist Evan Davis, who grilled Cameron about his positions on "modernizing" issues. Via Gay Star News:
Davis asked if he saw two recently married men kissing in a public park, would he consider it to be 'sweet' or 'mildly inappropriate'? 'No, that's fine. I've been very clear about this and this is where I do, as it were, marry traditional and modern values,' Cameron said. 'I believe in the family, I believe in marriage and I think it's such a great institution I think men should be able to marry each other and women should be able to marry each other.' He added: 'If I can kiss my wife in public I don't see why you can't kiss your husband in public.'Start at the 9:30 mark.
Cameron was also asked whether he wanted children to learn weights in kilograms or pounds and ounces, with the Prime Minister picking the latter. And he also said if a company had to choose between a moderately capable Brit or a very good Latvian for a job, he would rather the British company employed British people but it would be entirely up to them. Davis used the questions to highlight Cameron's attempts to heal the rift between the two sides, the modern and the socially conservative, of his party.

BRITAIN: Gay Tory MP Charged With Rape
Openly gay Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons Nigel Evans was arrested yesterday and charged with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault after complaints were filed by two men. Evans has been released on bail.
"Yesterday, I was interviewed by the police concerning two complaints, one of which dates back four years, made by two people who are well known to each other and until yesterday, I regarded as friends," Evans said in a statement to the media outside his home. "The complaints are completely false and I cannot understand why they have been made, especially as I have continued to socialise with one as recently as last week.
"I appreciate the way the police have handled this in such a sensitive manner and I would like to thank my colleagues, friends and members of the public who have expressed their support and, like me, a sense of incredulity at these events." His solicitor said afterwards that Evans was not intending to resign either as deputy speaker or as a member of parliament. Evans revealed he was gay in 2010, eight years after he was elected, saying he was "tired of living a lie".

Thatcher Funeral To Cost £10M
The funeral for Margaret Thatcher will cost an estimated £10M, a figure which will surely provide fodder for the critics of the Iron Lady's famed austerity principles. More on the planning:
The ceremony will be held at St Paul's Cathedral in London next Wednesday. The Queen and Prince Philip have already confirmed they will go. The guest list for the funeral was drawn up by Lady Thatcher's family with the assistance of the government and the Conservative Party, with more than 2,000 invitations being dispatched on Friday. It will be the first funeral of a British politician the Queen has attended since that of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been invited to attend, but it's not yet clear how the Obama administration might be represented. Newt Gingrich says he is going.
Broadcaster Andrew Neil and actor Michael Crawford will be present, as will Tory donor Lord Harris and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Those who have already confirmed they will not be attending include former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan's widow Nancy. Neither George Bush Senior, Mr Reagan's vice-president who succeeded him in the White House, nor his son George W Bush, US president between 2001 and 2009, will be attending.

BRITAIN: Anti-Gay Group Distributes One Million Anti-Marriage Leaflets
Britain's Coalition For Marriage says it is distributing one million anti-gay leaflets to voters in the home districts of members of Parliament who are considered wobbly on supporting the government's plan to legalize same-sex marriage.
The leaflets were being delivered door to door, and campaigners had been handing them out on the streets of marginal constituencies in the south west, and plan to visit others ahead of the vote. The leaflets contain photographs and contact details of local MPs, with text urging voters to lobby them in a bid to have the legislation rejected when it comes to a vote in parliament, reports the Christian Institute.LGBT activists claim that 330 MPs have indicated their support of Prime Minister David Cameron's plan, while only 126 have voiced their opposition. There are presently 650 members of Parliament. (Via Pink News)
This proved problematic last week, as Sarah Newton, the Conservative MP for Truro and Falmouth, said leaflets handed out in her area wrongly implied she supported the group. She said she was angry at the misrepresentation and intended to seek legal advice. Campaign director of C4M, Colin Hart, said: “Our local activists are fired up to oppose these undemocratic proposals from a Government that is increasingly looking out of touch with ordinary men and women.

George Osborne: Marriage Must Happen In UK, Look What Happened To GOP
Citing the recent sweep of marriage victories in America, high ranking Tory member George Osborne says his party must "get in step with the people" if they want to stay in power.
His call came in an analysis of why Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney in the US election despite rising unemployment and even polls suggesting that the Republican candidate was trusted more to turn the economy around. Mr Osborne said that the Republicans had lost “swathes of voters” because of their traditionalist positions on social issues. His comments represent a break from conventional political wisdom about what wins elections summed up by the strategists behind Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 campaign: “It’s the economy, stupid”.

BRITAIN: Anti-Gay Tory MP Crispin Blunt Leaves His Wife And Comes Out
Conservative Party MP Crispin Blunt has announced that he is leaving his wife and coming out. The Reigate MP appealed for privacy and said he was "coming to terms with his homosexuality". In a statement, his office said: "Crispin Blunt wishes to make it known that he has separated from his wife Victoria. "He decided to come to terms with his homosexuality and explained the position to his family. The consequence is this separation. "There is no third party involvement, but this is difficult for his immediate and wider family and he hopes for understanding and support for them. "The family do not wish to make any further public comment and hope that their privacy will be respected as they deal with these difficult private issues."Another Ken Mehlman? Blunt's voting record in Parliament is described on Wikipedia as having been "broadly unsympathetic" to LGBT rights. Going back to his election in 1997, Blunt either voted "no" or was absent on important votes on civil partnerships, anti-gay bullying, and age of consent parity. However in 2007 he voted with the majority to approve the Equality Act.
