Women Of Mary Tyler Moore To Reunite

The five female cast members of the Mary Tyler Moore Show will reunite for the first time ever in an upcoming episode of Hot In Cleveland.
In the Hot In Cleveland episode, which tapes April 5, I hear Elka (White) and Mamie Sue (Engel) decide to get their bowling team, named GLOB: The Gorgeous Ladies of Bowling, back together. They reunite with former team members Diane (Moore), Peg (Leachman) and Angie (Harper). The quintet had a falling-out after their championship season went to their heads. This is believed to be the first time the five former castmates will act in front of a camera since taping the MTM finale in 1977. It’s also Moore’s second visit to Cleveland — she previously played Elka’s cellmate in a Season 2 episode. Shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show paved the way for female driven comedies like Hot In Cleveland. Hot In Cleveland, toplined by White, Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick, returns for its summer season with a live episode June 19.

At The 1996 AIDS March In DC

I was going through my ex's photo albums here in Fort Lauderdale last night and found this shot I took at the 1996 National AIDS Candlelight March in Washington DC.  That's NAMES Project founder Cleve Jones near the center, with Judith Light to his left.  Further to the right in the grey jacket is Betty Buckley.  On the far left is current DC House Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton and to her left in the leopard jacket is Valerie Harper. The gentleman in the white suit is Jim Graham, who is now on the Washington DC City Council.

Elizabeth Taylor was ill that weekend and participated in the march from a golf cart, but I couldn't get near her due to a mob of press and only got a blurry photo of the back of her head as she went by.  It was an unspeakably moving night and the next day President Clinton and the First Lady walked with Cleve to view the Quilt, which spanned the Mall from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument.  Today the Quilt is headquartered in Atlanta, where JMG reader Gert McMullin oversees its safety and makes laborious daily repairs as panels return from displays around the world.

Valerie Harper Has Terminal Brain Cancer

Horrible news. People Magazine reports:
A battery of tests revealed she has leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare condition that occurs when cancer cells spread into the fluid-filled membrane surrounding the brain. Her doctors say she has as little as three months left to live. Resolved to face her last days with courage and humor, "I don't think of dying," says the actress, 73, who previously battled lung cancer in 2009. "I think of being here now."

Broadway Friday

- Carrie Fisher says the producer of her just-closed hit show Wishful Drinking hasn't paid her what he owes and failed to move the show to a big enough Broadway house. The show had its entire run at the small and non-profit Studio 54.

- South Pacific will close on August 22nd.

- Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown: The Musical, begins previews at Lincoln Center on October 2nd.

- Valerie Harper opens tonight as Tallulah Bankhead in Looped. Follow her on Twitter, she's quite chatty.

- Bloomberg.com reviewer John Simon is grossed out by the Off Broadway gay play The Pride, and says mainstream audiences will be too: "Another problem is men kissing each other and even indulging in violent anal intercourse. Add to this much crudely detailed palaver about fellatio and unleashed indulgence in expletives to make David Mamet envious." GET TICKETS HERE.

- U2's Edge says that Spider-Man: The Musical will open this fall despite major production, funding, and other issues. It's the most expensive production in Broadway history, but things are looking up since Disney acquired Marvel Comics in a few months ago.
