Yoko Ono - Don't Worry Kyoko

Via Stereogum:
At Glastonbury a week and a half ago, Yoko Ono played a set with Yo La Tengo backing her, a big event for fans of way-out music. Ono is 81 years old and still capable of slashing through any noise around her, and this is badass. And a video of Ono and Yo La Tengo performing a heavy-groove version on her 1969 Plastic Ono Band B-side “Don’t Worry Kyoko” has gone viral, gaining a million more hits than any of the BBC’s other Glasto videos. That should be good! Unfortunately, it’s gained that audience thanks to the prevailing dumbshit idea that Ono is the talentless weirdo hack who broke up the Beatles. If you can watch the performance and think she was trying, and failing, to do something more conventional, I honestly don’t know about you.

Remixer & Blowoff DJ Rich Morel Scores 20th Billboard #1 Dance Hit

Blowoff DJ Rich Morel has scored his 20th number one remix on Billboard's dance chart with his latest work for 78 year-old Yoko Ono. Along with numerous hits with Ono, Morel has notched chart topping remixes for Depeche Mode, New Order, The Killers, Pet Shop Boys, Cyndi Lauper and many others. Rolling Stone reports on Yoko's streak:
Yoko Ono has overcome the likes of Rihanna, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to score her sixth consecutive Number One on the Billboard Hot Dance Club chart with "Move On Fast." The song is her eighth Number One dance hit overall, and the latest in Ono's series of remix singles. The original version of "Move On Fast" was issued as the B-Side to her folky 1972 single "Now or Never."

JMG EXCLUSIVE:
Here's a free download of Cascade, Rich Morel's latest remix for the white-hot UK dance band Deluka. If you've been to Blowoff recently, you'll recognize this as one of the peak songs of the night. Hit the down arrow to grab it.

Disco Grandma

Yoko Ono, 76, scores her fourth #1 on the dance chart this week, continuing her impressive run as the oldest person (by far) to hit the top of that chart. From my January 2008 post, when she last hit #1:
A month shy of her 75th birthday, a remix of Yoko Ono's 1981 single No, No, No has hit #1 on the Billboard dance chart. It's Yoko's third #1 dance hit and her 11th appearance on the dance chart, beginning with her 1981 #13 hit Walking On Thin Ice, a remix of which hit #1 in 2003. Several months ago, Yoko hit #2 on the dance chart with You're The One, featuring a remix by my pal (and Blowoff DJ), Rich Morel. (Morel has had four of his remixes hit #1.)

Morel & Ono Notch Dance #1

Since I now follow Rich Morel's chart successes the way I used to track Donna Summer's, I must mention that this week Morel has his seventh #1 Billboard dance hit with his remix of Yoko Ono's Give Peace A Chance. At 75 years old, Ono is the oldest person to have a dance chart number one, of which this latest is her fourth. A couple of months ago Morel also hit #1 with his remix and co-production of Cyndi Lauper's Same Old Fucking Story. Looks like Lauper is also about to get another chart topper from her excellent full-length, Bring Ya To Tha' Brink.

RECOMMENDED: Listen to Rich Morel's latest podcast, which includes Give Peace A Chance.

Yoko Ono Scores Third #1 Dance Hit

A month shy of her 75th birthday, a remix of Yoko Ono's 1981 single No, No, No has hit #1 on the Billboard dance chart. It's Yoko's third #1 dance hit and her 11th appearance on the dance chart, beginning with her 1981 #13 hit, Walking On Thin Ice, a remix of which hit #1 in 2003. Several months ago, Yoko hit #2 on the dance chart with You're The One, featuring a remix by my pal (and Blowoff DJ), Rich Morel. (Morel has had four of his remixes hit #1.)

Yoko Ono is by far the oldest person ever to achieve a #1 dance hit. And since this week's #1 is credited merely to "Ono" (on the charts, but not, curiously, on the artwork shown), the artist and song title combo (Ono - No, No, No) may be the first palindrome to #1 hit on any chart. I can't think of any others, at least.

RELATED: In 1980, John Lennon died clutching the final mix of Walking On Thin Ice in his hands, having just returned from completing his guitar solo on the song. The eerily prescient lyrics about the unpredictability of death were a real shocker for everybody when the single was released the next year. Walking On Thin Ice remains in my lifetime all-time Top Ten. "I may cry someday. But the tears will dry whichever way. And when our hearts return to ashes, it'll just be a story... " Her loneliness in the video is heartwrenching.
