Bacon Scope

Possibly a prank by P&G:
Advertised as a mouthwash that tastes like bacon when being swished but leaves a minty fresh finish, Bacon Scope will be launched next week, leading many to believe that this is all a big April Fool's Day hoax playing on the current bacon craze. For their part, Proctor & Gamble is playing it straight, insisting in a press release that Bacon Scope is a real product and has blitzed the internet with marketing videos, press photos of the product, and even press releases sent to journalists around the nation.
"Bacon Scope is not a nutritional replacement for breakfast."

The Slater's 50/50 chain has launched a 100% ground bacon burger. Which comes with a slice of bacon, just because. It bears the Simpsons-esque name, The 'Merica Burger.

Burger King Launches Bacon Sundae

This should get PETA in an uproar.
Burger King wants to lure customers this summer with a barbecue party - and a bacon sundae. The world's second biggest hamburger chain on Thursday is launching several pork, beef and chicken sandwiches as limited time offers. And for a sweet ending, the company is also offering a bacon sundae - vanilla soft serve with fudge, caramel, bacon crumbles and a piece of bacon - that started in Nashville, Tenn. earlier this year. The salty-sweet dessert clocks in at 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.
My love for bacon knows no bounds...wait, maybe it does.

Daily Grumble

Why do this weekend's NYC Bacon-Palooza and NYC Pickle Day have to be so far apart? They're both downtown, but logic demands they be on the same block. Bother.

Bacon Party With Matt Alber

Saturday night I went to a bacon-themed birthday party at Julius, NYC's oldest gay bar, which has mysteriously become a hip place to be seen lately. Immediately upon our arrival, bacon-laden cupcakes were thrust into our hands (although the vegan leatherboys' bacon treats were made out of marzipan.) On the rear wall of the bar a slideshow depicted friends of the birthday boy doing various funny/creepy/illegal things with bacon. Our people!

Anyway...the highlight of the night was running into budding gay pop star Matt Alber, who'd missed his flight home to LA and was being toured around West Village bars. (This slighty murky shot was taken with Matt's iPhone, so you can't really tell he's holding a JMG magnet.) A full Matt Alber concert is in the works for NYC very soon and I'll get y'all the deets as soon as it's finalized.

The Bacontarian

Continuing my rash of bacon-related posts: Mystery Science Theater 3000 host Mike Nelson is halfway through his pledge to eat nothing but bacon for the month of February. Here's how he announced the stunt on January 31st:
For the entire month of February, 2009, I, Michael J. Nelson will eat nothing but bacon. Nothing, my friends, but bacon. Why? Because bacon is nature’s finest and most nourishing food. Also, because several doubters on the RiffTrax staff had the unmitigated gall to insult bacon by making the outrageous claim that, as good as it is, no one could eat very much of it and live. I can and will. Therefore I will spend the month proving it. And I invite any and all of you to join me in my quest. If you do, I’ll certainly share your stories and blog posts.

Now for the fine print: “Bacon” shall hereafter refer to the cured and smoked fatty cuts of pork, either back, side or belly. In other words “American bacon”. No “Canadian bacon”, which is really just lunchmeat. No pork chops. No turkey bacon. No “tofacon” or any such horror. Just bacon. No condiments allowed. No syrups, or hot sauces, or pureed vegetables in the form of ketchup. No sauces at all. Just nature’s finest bacon, all by its dignified self. I am making allowances for the following beverages: beer, wine, martinis and water. No juices, no V8, nothing that could be construed as “healthy”. This is somewhat arbitrary, I grant you, but one bit of madness at a time, is my reasoning.
About half of the hundreds of commenters at Nelson's blog are predicting a fatal heart attack. The rest foresee a dramatic weight loss, Atkins-style. Most agree that Nelson's love for bacon will be permanently destroyed. I'd say a nice bout of gout is likely.
