Wreckage From AirAsia Flight Found

Via the Los Angeles Times:
Searchers recovered bodies from the Java Sea on Tuesday and found what officials said wreckage from Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 as the three-day mystery over the plane's whereabouts reached a heartbreaking resolution for the families of 162 people aboard. “I am absolutely devastated,” Tony Fernandes, AirAsia's chief executive, said in a statement. “This is a very difficult moment for all of us at AirAsia as we await further developments of the search-and-rescue operations but our first priority now is the well-being of the family members of those on board QZ8501,” he said. AirAsia said debris belonging to its aircraft was found in the Karimata Strait -- between Singapore and Indonesia -- about 110 nautical miles southwest of Pangkalan Bun, on the southern edge of Borneo island.
At this writing about 40 bodies have been recovered.

Another Airliner Is Missing

Via USA Today:
The fate of an AirAsia Indonesia jet that disappeared Sunday over the Java Sea with 162 people aboard remained a mystery more than 16 hours after it disappeared in violent weather, authorities said.Flight QZ8501 was bound for Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia, when it lost contact with air traffic control at about 7:24 a.m. (6:24 p.m. ET on Saturday), the airline said in a statement. The time in Surabaya is 12 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time; Singapore is 13 hours ahead of ET. "We don't dare to presume what has happened except that it has lost contact," said Djoko Murjatmodjo, Indonesia's acting director general of transportation. Minutes before the plane disappeared from radar, the pilot asked air traffic control for permission to avoid a cloud bank by turning left and going higher, to 34,000 feet. Flight QZ8501 gave no distress signal, he said.

MALAYSIA: Big Win For Trans Rights

Three Malaysian transgender women have won a landmark civil rights case. Via Agence France-Presse:
A three-judge appeals court panel ruled that a state provision that bars Muslim men from dressing as women was unconstitutional, saying it "deprives the appellants of the right to live with dignity". "It has the effect of denying the appellants and other sufferers of GID (gender identify disorder) to move freely in public places... This is degrading, oppressive and inhuman," judge Hishamudin Yunus said.

The verdict overturns a 2012 lower court ruling, which had dismissed the challenge by the three appellants -- Muslims who were born male but identify as women -- over their arrest four years ago under the law in southern Negri Sembilan state. Malaysia has a double track court system with state Islamic laws governing civil matters for Muslims, who account for 60 per cent of the country’s 30 million people.

Under state Islamic laws, men dressing or acting as women is punishable by up to three years in jail. Some Malaysian states also outlaw cross-dressing by women. Aston Paiva, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, said the ruling could be used to challenge any arrest of transgender people throughout Malaysia. "It’s quite historic... This will be a precedent... This court binds all other high courts," Paiva said.
Malaysia continues to criminalize homosexuality under laws that go back its time as a British colony.

MALAYSIA: Two Women Arrested Under Sharia Law Forbidding Homosexuality

Two Malaysian women were arrested this week and charged under Sharia Law of being lesbians.  J. Lester Feder reports at Buzzfeed:
Reports by the Malaysian newspaper Sinar Harian suggest the two women were swept up in a broad morality raid launched around the Southeast Asian country’s annual celebration of its independence from Great Britain. The police had gone to what news reports identified as a “budget hotel” and arrested seven apparently heterosexual couples in other rooms for violating laws against adultery and “close proximity.” The police arrested the two women — both identified as university students — under a code criminalizing sex between women after finding a dildo in their room.  Islam is the official religion under the country’s constitution, and Shariah codes have been enacted by state governments throughout the country. These laws are commonly used to arrest transwomen, and the Malaysian trans rights group Justice for Sisters has brought litigation seeking to stop these arrests. Malaysia’s ruling Islamist government has also used homophobia as a political tool, including repeatedly jailing opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy. But this may be the first time news has broken of women being arrested under the codes’ prohibition on lesbianism in Malaysia, said Justice for Sisters’s Thilaga Sulathireh.
Feder notes that the women's rights group Sisters In Islam is protesting the arrests because the police have no evidence that actual sex took place. The women are claiming that the dildo had just arrived by mail and had never been used.

Obama Speaks About Airliner Attack

This afternoon President Obama held a press conference on the shooting down of the Malaysian airliner. Here's an excerpt of his statement via a transcript provided by the White House:
Here’s what we know so far. Evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile that was launched from an area that is controlled by Russian-backed separatists inside of Ukraine. We also know that this is not the first time a plane has been shot down in eastern Ukraine. Over the last several weeks, Russian-backed separatists have shot down a Ukrainian transport plane and a Ukrainian helicopter, and they claimed responsibility for shooting down a Ukrainian fighter jet. Moreover, we know that these separatists have received a steady flow of support from Russia. This includes arms and training. It includes heavy weapons, and it includes anti-aircraft weapons.

Here’s what must happen now. This was a global tragedy. An Asian airliner was destroyed in European skies, filled with citizens from many countries. So there has to be a credible international investigation into what happened. The U.N. Security Council has endorsed this investigation, and we will hold all its members -- including Russia -- to their word. In order to facilitate that investigation, Russia, pro-Russian separatists, and Ukraine must adhere to an immediate cease-fire. Evidence must not be tampered with. Investigators need to access the crash site. And the solemn task of returning those who were lost on board the plane to their loved ones needs to go forward immediately.
Near the end of his remarks, the president paid tribute to the many AIDS researchers who perished in the attack.
Let me close by making one additional comment. On board Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, there were apparently nearly 100 researchers and advocates traveling to an international conference in Australia dedicated to combating AIDS/HIV. These were men and women who had dedicated their own lives to saving the lives of others and they were taken from us in a senseless act of violence. In this world today, we shouldn’t forget that in the midst of conflict and killing, there are people like these -- people who are focused on what can be built rather than what can be destroyed; people who are focused on how they can help people that they’ve never met; people who define themselves not by what makes them different from other people but by the humanity that we hold in common. It’s important for us to lift them up and to affirm their lives. And it’s time for us to heed their example.
After his prepared statement, the president took questions from the press about sanctions against Russia.

TRAILER: The Vanishing Act

Via the Associated Press:
The director of a movie based on the Malaysian Airlines plane disappearance is apologizing for a trailer that suggests a love triangle among members of its crew. Rupesh Paul announced "The Vanishing Act" at the Cannes Film Festival. A brief trailer for the film, which has not yet been cast, shows two crew members kissing as a third looks at them angrily. In a statement to The Associated Press, Rupesh Paul Productions said he was removing that element of the teaser trailer soon "so as not to hurt sentiments" of the families of those on the plane. He also offered "an unconditional apology to the families of the missing MH 370 passengers" and said he never "meant to hurt any of the grieving friends and families of the passengers in the missing plane nor make profit over the missing passengers."

Possible Breakthrough On Missing Airliner

USA Today reports:
Authorities in Australia are investigating two objects in the Indian Ocean spotted by satellite imagery that may be related to the missing Malaysian airliner, in what is being described as the most credible lead in the hunt for the plane that vanished nearly two weeks ago with 239 passengers and crew aboard. A Norwegian ship was the first vessel to reach the search area, the BBC reports. Ships from Australia, New Zealand and the Untied States were also en route to the area, about 1,5t0 southwest of Perth, Australia.

CNN: Missing Plane Was Far Off Course

CNN has a breaking report:
Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was hundreds of miles off course, traveling in the opposite direction from its original destination and had stopped sending identifying transponder codes before it disappeared, a senior Malaysian Air Force official told CNN Tuesday. If correct, these are ominous signs that could call into question whether someone in the cockpit might have deliberately steered the plane away from its intended destination, a former U.S. aviation investigator said. "This kind of deviation in course is simply inexplicable," said Paul Goelz, former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board. However, veteran pilot Kit Darby, president of Aviation Information Resources, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that mechanical problems could still explain everything: A power failure would have turned off the main transponder and its backup, and the plane could have flown for more than an hour, he said.
If the new report is accurate, it could be that all those ships and aircraft have been searching the wrong area.

New Developments In Airliner Case

Via New York Daily News:
Two men who used stolen travel documents to board the Malaysia Airlines jet that vanished Saturday were caught by surveillance cameras and were not Asian in appearance, a Malaysian official said Monday, conflicting earlier reports about what the pair looked like. "We confirmed now they are not Asian-looking males," Malaysia's Department of Civil Aviation chief, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, said at a news conference Monday. Azharuddin said investigators reviewed surveillance footage taken at the Kuala Lumpur airport "from check-in right to departure" and confirmed that security protocols were followed — despite the fact that two men managed to board with stolen Italian and Austrian passports.
More from CNN:
According to Thai police officials, an Iranian man by the name of Kazem Ali purchased the tickets for two friends who he said wanted to return home to Europe. While Ali made the initial booking by telephone, either Ali or someone acting on his behalf paid for the tickets in cash, according to police. Rahman said Monday that authorities have reviewed security footage from the airport and said the men who traveled on the stolen passports "are not Asian-looking men." Interpol tweeted Sunday it was examining additional "suspect #passports."
There have been no "credible claims of responsibility" by terrorist groups, but some experts are speculating that the aircraft's disappearance may have been a trial run for a larger scale attempt to come later.

Search Continues For Malaysian Airliner

Debris from the aircraft may have been found.
Vietnamese aircraft spotted what they suspected was one of the doors belonging to the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 on Sunday, as troubling questions emerged about how two passengers managed to board the Boeing 777 using stolen passports. The discovery comes as officials consider the possibility that the plane disintegrated mid-flight, a senior source told Reuters. The state-run Thanh Nien newspaper cited Lt. Gen. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of staff of Vietnam's army, as saying searchers in a low-flying plane had spotted an object suspected of being a door from the missing jet. It was found in waters about 56 miles south of Tho Chu island, in the same area where oil slicks were spotted Saturday.

Malaysia Warning: How To Spot Gays

The Malaysian government has issued a guide for parents on the warning signs that their children might have the gay.
The Ministry of Education in Malaysia has endorsed guidelines to help parents tell if their children are gay or lesbian. Malaysiakini reports that the list of 'symptoms' for gay men includes stereotypes such as: ‘Have a muscular body and like to show their body by wearing V-neck and sleeveless clothes,' ‘Prefer tight and light-coloured clothes,’ and 'like to bring big handbags, similar to those used by women, when hanging out.' The list of ‘warning’ signs for lesbians are less superficial. Potential lesbians apparently ‘distance themselves from other women… besides their female companions’, ‘like to hang out, have meals and sleep in the company of women’ and ‘have no affection for men’.
Homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia. Two years ago the official state film agency ruled that gay characters can only be portrayed if they "repent or die" before the movie ends.

Malaysia Bans Gay TV Characters

The Malaysian government has banned television shows that feature gay characters.
Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin confirmed [the ban]. He said the ban was effective immediately but would only start with state-owned TV and radio stations. "If it means cancelling some of the shows, so be it," he told The Star Friday, adding that the decision was to curb the "influence" of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. He also said the decision will be expanded to cover privately-owned stations as well as satellite TV providers. As for foreign productions, he said the Censorship Board will remove episodes from running TV shows and bar movies with gay characters from being screened locally.
Maglin also said that shows hosted by effeminate men may continue because "they are born this way."

Malaysia MP Calls For "Gay Rehab" Centers

Claiming that 30% of the nation has somehow become homosexual, a member of Malaysia's parliament is calling for "gay rehab" centers.
Bernama Online reported that Datuk Baharum Mohamad, a Barisan Nasional MP, told the country’s Parliament yesterday that three in ten men in the country were gay, a figure he described as “scary”. Baharum said: “We have to find a solution to combat these activities from getting rampant just like the efforts we take to combat drugs. “A study has found that, right now, three out of 10 men in Malaysia are gay. This is scary.” The study has so far not been identified and it is not clear whether Baharum intended ‘rehabilitation’ to be voluntary. Sodomy is illegal in Malaysia, and the country has already caused anger after it sent “effeminate” boys to a “gay cure” camp in early 2011.

MALAYSIA: Government Sends 66 Boys To "Ex-Gay" Camp For Being Effeminate

The Malaysian government has ordered 66 boys to report to a camp where they will be "trained" out of their effeminate ways in order to prevent them from becoming homosexuals.
The boys between 13 and 17 years old reported Monday for what is officially being called a "self-development course" after their schoolteachers in Terengganu state identified them as students who displayed effeminate mannerisms, said Razali Daud, the state's education director. They will undergo religious and motivational classes and physical guidance, Razali said. He declined to give further details. The camp is meant "to guide them back to the right path in life before they reach a point of no return," Razali told The Associated Press. "Such effeminate behavior is unnatural and will affect their studies and their future."
Homosexual acts are punishable in Malaysia by up to 20 years in prison.

Malaysia: Gay Sex Leads To Swine Flu

Breaking news:
Malaysia's state-run news agency is urging its readers to avoid homosexual sex and masturbation if they want to remain free of swine flu. An article published Sunday by Bernama, the Malaysian government news agency, singles out homosexual sex as an activity that can cause people to contract swine flu, while also emphasizing that "normal sexual union between members of the opposite sex was absolutely safe." Quoting a Dr. V. M. Palaniappan, the article states that homosexual sex "caused the body to develop friction heat which in turn, produced acid and made the body hyperacidised."
Gay sex is illegal in Malaysia..
