Johnny Weir: I'm Sexually Gay, But....
Saying that he's sick of pressure from gay websites to come out, Johnny Weir uses his forthcoming memoir to finally allow that while he's sexually gay, he'd totally marry a woman if she was right for him. And very understanding about the whole "we're not gonna fuck" thing.Labels: coming out, figure skating, Johnny Weir, sports

Quote Of The Day - Dorothy Hamill
"If I hadn't been born a woman I would have certainly been gay, because I love sparkles and ruffles and color." - Olympic figure skating legend Dorothy Hamill, when asked what it means to be a woman. Hamill was in NYC attending the 125th anniversary party for Good Housekeeping Magazine.Labels: Dorothy Hamill, figure skating, Quote Of The Day

Johnny Weir: Too Gay For Stars On Ice
Olympian Johnny Weir has not been asked to join the Star On Ice tour because organizers don't find him "family friendly."GLAAD has learned from a source that wishes to remain anonymous that sponsors of the Stars on Ice Tour, which include Smuckers and IMG Entertainment, have refused to allow 3-time US National Champion and 2-time Olympian Johnny Weir to participate because they claim that he is “not family friendly.” To say that Weir is “not family friendly” would be a clear jab at his perceived sexual orientation. Weir is extremely involved with his family. He is putting his younger brother through college, and supports the family financially because his father’s disability prohibits him from working. Weir’s dedication to his family can be clearly documented in the Sundance series, Be Good Johnny Weir, which follows him and his family and friends through his life and career as a championship skater.GLAAD's petition to Stars On Ice sponsors Smuckers and IMG is here.

Too Gay For The Olympics
Current TV's Bryan Safi takes on the media's handling of Johnny Weir. I got a big laugh at the ranking of sports by butchness.

Dorothy Hamill Interviews Johnny Weir
Olympic figure skating legend Dorothy Hamill interviewed Johnny Weir about the Canadian broadcasters who said that he should be forced to pass a gender test before he competes. Unsurprisingly, Johnny doesn't give a fuck.

HomoQuotable - Johnny Weir
"I would like to announce that due to pressures and threats from a certain animal rights group, I will be changing the genuine fox fur on my free program costume that I will use in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, B.C., to white faux fur. I made this decision after several threats were sent to me about disrupting my performance in the Olympic Games and my costume designer, Stephanie Handler, was repeatedly sent messages of hate and disgust. I do not want something as silly as my costume disrupting my second Olympic experience and my chance at a medal, a dream I have had since I was a kid."I hope these activists can understand that my decision to change my costume is in no way a victory for them, but a draw. I am not changing in order to appease them, but to protect my integrity and the integrity of the Olympic Games as well as my fellow competitors. Just weeks away from hitting my starting position on the ice in Vancouver, I have technique and training to worry about and that trumps any costume and any threat I may receive." - Olympic ice skater Johnny Weir. He recently tweeted that the most recent death threats had come from a group called Friends Of Animals, although he says he's received similar threats from PETA since the 2006 Olympics.

HomoQuotable - Johnny Weir
"I don’t think turning figure skating into some kind of X-Games event will promote figure skating to the male population of especially North America, but also the world. This kind of talk has been going around for some time, about making the men more masculine and the women more feminine. But it’s not figure skating if you don’t have the freedom to express yourself and make something beautiful. That’s my goal every time I get new music and get new costumes: to tell a story and to put on a show."To butch up figure skating is a ridiculous idea, because there’s no putting me in some two-piece pants suit to skate in. [Laughs.] I love my glitter, I love my prettiness, I love getting my hair done before the events, I love putting on makeup because I’m going to be on TV. I know Elvis Stojko was a big proponent for butching up men’s skating, but I have a hard time taking suggestions from a man who rocked purple pajamas in the Olympic Games and World championships. In my opinion, anyone who wants to change the actual people who are doing the figure skating can suck it." - Openly gay figure skating champion Johnny Weir, talking to Outsports.com. Weir hopes to compete at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Butching Up Figure Skating
Canadian figure skating officials are looking for ways to butch up the sport in advance of the 2010 Vancouver Games. "It's just as tough as football," said Canadian figure skater Jeremy Ten, ranked third in Canada. "We aren't tackling each other, but we are hitting the ice pretty hard. We're hitting the boards; we're scraping our shins and cutting ourselves." Along with the more masculine presentation, skating officials say it's also time to throw away the frilly, sequin-clad outfits in favor of simpler, more uniform looks. The attempted rebranding of the sport has outraged many gay advocacy groups, who say it's nothing more than a thinly veiled attack on skating's sizable gay audience.Skating officials say they are looking to draw a "hockey crowd" to the sport. Doesn't seem very "thinly veiled" to me.
