Already

And yesterday the #1 inbound search link for JMG was "Giant Inflatable Beaver." It's now in fourth place on my all-time search history behind "Carrie Prejean sex tape", "bacon explosion", and "Aretha's hat." Sigh.

Giant Inflatable Beavers

Surely, this is the one thing we'll all remember from last night's closing ceremonies. They kind of remind me of the Union Rat.

Too Gay For The Olympics

Current TV's Bryan Safi takes on the media's handling of Johnny Weir. I got a big laugh at the ranking of sports by butchness.

Johnny Weir: Leave My Attackers Alone

At a press conference about the attacks on him by some sports commentators, Johnny Weir dismissed his naysayers as free to have their opinions and said he's not interested in punitive actions against them, as some in Canada are calling for. Weir went on to say that the traditional ideas about masculinity and femininity are "old fashioned."

The Rules Of Curling

Embiggen the above chart for a rather simple explanation of curling. Not included is an explanation for Canada's fascination with the game.

Dorothy Hamill Interviews Johnny Weir

Olympic figure skating legend Dorothy Hamill interviewed Johnny Weir about the Canadian broadcasters who said that he should be forced to pass a gender test before he competes. Unsurprisingly, Johnny doesn't give a fuck.

PhoboQuotable - Louie Varrecchio

"As for that natural male aggressiveness; no longer is it guided toward its good and useful application, it’s just treated with Ritalin and deprogrammed away. And what do we have to show for it now? A metro-sexual class of soft-bellied fellas who are inept at taking charge and making decisions, yet are strangely proficient at plucking their own eyebrows in traffic as they head to their 4 o’clock pedi.

"My daughters are now young ladies and — please God — neither one of them seems very likely to become one of those overwhelmed moms who lie awake at night staring at the ceiling after coming to the horrible realization that they married their best girlfriend. Even so, I worry for all of those little boys out there whose parents have bought into the lie and just don’t get it. If I had had a young son sitting next to me watching the Olympics you can bet he wouldn’t be left to witness the charade of men’s figure skating without some much needed observations from his dear ol’ Neanderthal Dad." - Catholic Exchange columnist Louie Varrecchio, complaining about this year's Olympic male figure skaters.

Openly Lesbian Dutch Speed Skater Ireen Wüst Wins Gold Medal

Dutch speed skater Ireen Wüst, who came out as lesbian last October, won the gold medal in last night's women's 1500 meter final.
Wust, who won the 3,000 and was third in the 1,500 four years ago in Turin, won with a time of 1 minute 56.89 seconds. "Pulling all the pieces together, I'm so proud and happy. I can't describe how happy I am. I don't have words for it," said Wust, who broke down crying on the medal podium while the Dutch national anthem was played. "I think I'm the happiest person on Earth right now." Kristina Groves of Canada was second in 1:57.14 and Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic took the bronze in 1:57.96 to add to her gold from the 3,000 at these games.

Daily Ungrumble

I've watched about five hours of Olympic curling and I still don't have the faintest idea what the rules are, how scoring is calculated, or even what the actual goal of the game is. Something about putting the rock in the hoose by the end. But I'm happy to keep watching, mostly for the closeups of Canadian champion curler John Morris.

Pretty In Pink

Olympian Johnny Weir lobbed another "fuck you" at the queenphobic skating world tonight, competing in a hot pink and lace-trimmed costume with a neckline that plunged to his navel. Then he concluded his routine by blowing dainty kisses to the crowd. Weir's score in the short program...not so great. His score for in-your-face fabulosity...through the roof!

Out Lesbian KD Lang Steals Show At Vancouver Olympics Opening Ceremonies

Despite the preceding three hours of high-tech spectacle, it was openly lesbian and native Canadian kd lang's simple, yet soaring take on Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah that stole the show during the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympics. Watch video here. Overnight the top three searches on Google were for various punctuations of lang's name, as accolades poured out on the world's blogs and news sites. Twitter reactions here. Last night was the second time in two weeks that Cohen's classic was sung to a global audience by an openly gay performer, as Matt Morris had dueted on the track with Justin Timberlake during the Haiti telethon. It was lang's second Winter Olympics performance, 22 years ago (during her cowgirl schtick period) she performed Turn Me Around at the 1988 Calgary games.
