24 Emmy Noms For Game Of Thrones

Via Yahoo News:
The elaborate fantasy saga “Game of Thrones” received a leading 24 Emmy Awards nominations Thursday, its stature apparently untouched by backlash over a female character’s rape scene. The series is a contender again for top drama honors, an award that has eluded it since it debuted in 2011. TV academy voters rarely give shows in the sci-fi or other genres the ultimate accolade. The TV academy took a step toward recognizing the increasingly diverse talent on TV, giving best actress nods to black stars Taraji P. Henson for “Empire” and Viola Davis for “How to Get Away with Murder.” That sets up a possibility of a history-making win: An African-American actress has never won the top drama acting award. “I gotta win! I gotta win for history!” an exuberant Henson said when asked about the prospect during an “Empire” panel in May. However, two-time nominee Kerry Washington of “Scandal” was left out this year.
Also receiving multiple nominations is Transparent, with a best actor nomination going to Jeffrey Tambor. Variety has the full list.

Emmy History: Laverne Cox Earns Acting Nomination For Orange Is The New Black

Via GLAAD:
GLAAD today applauded the list of nominees for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, which was among the most LGBT-inclusive list in Emmy history. Laverne Cox became the first transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy in an acting category. Cox received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophia Burset in the hit Netflix Original Series Orange is the New Black. This year's list of nominees also included many openly LGB actors. Parsons was also nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for Big Bang Theory. Out comedian and actress Kate McKinnon received her first nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Saturday Night Live. Sarah Paulson received a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a TV Movie or Mini-Series for American Horror Story: Coven. 2012 Emmy Nominations Announced

Openly gay actors Jim Parsons and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are among those nominated for 2012 Emmys. The Los Angeles times recaps the biggest nods:
Many of the nominees have been perennial favorites in recent years, such as “Mad Men,” “30 Rock” and “Modern Family,” as well as Jon Hamm, Tina Fey, Michael C. Hall and Jim Parsons. But there were also some newcomers in the mix, including Showtime’s freshman drama series “Homeland” and its stars, Damian Lewis and Claire Danes. AMC’s period drama “Mad Men” was one of the big winners of the morning, earning 17 nominations including nods for best drama, best actor for Jon Hamm and best actress for Elisabeth Moss. “Downton Abbey” had 16 nominations and is another contender for best drama. The impressive showing for the historical British drama indicates that it got a boost from the strategic decision to move it from the miniseries category -- which it won last year -- to the dramatic series category.
Ferguson faces all the male actors in Modern Family. True Blood was completely snubbed. Dammit, I was rooting for Pam.

VIDEO: Jane Lynch's opening was the definite highlight of the entire show. BTW, Leonard Nimoy stepped in for Alec Baldwin after Baldwin quit in protest of Fox cutting his joke about News Corp's hacking scandal.

PhoboQuotable - Isaiah Washington

"Whether or not it serves any particular agenda that he's nominated now, to make a point, I can't speak on that. That's theoretical. I don't know, but good for him." - Isaiah Washington, implying that yesterday's Emmy nomination for Grey's Anatomy nemesis T.R. Knight was a reward for suffering Washington's "faggot" taunts. NBC has offered Washington a guest spot on the upcoming Bionic Woman remake.

UPDATE: Readers correctly point out that Washington did make a more gracious comment during the interview: "T.R. Knight is a good actor. He has been a wonderful actor from day one. T.R. Knight, congratulations. He finally got the attention he deserved."
